The Kamchatka Peninsula - situated in the Pacific ＂Ring of Fire＂ - has 29 active and over 4oo extinct volcanoes. Since it is situated in the northeastern extremity of Russia, in subarctic climate, the volcanic landforms are overprinted by the 446 glaciers. This research focuses on the ltMutnaya catchment which drains the southern slopes of two active volcanoes： Avachinsky and Koryaksky. Those volcanoes are a permanent threat for the cities of Petropavlovsk and Elizovo, which are the 2 of 3 cities of the peninsula. Hence, most of the studies carriedout in the area dealt with the natural hazards and only few focus on landscape evolution. Thus, the purpose of this study was to elaborate a cartographic approach which integrates classic geomorphology with state of the art GIS and remote sensing techniques. As result, different landforms and related processes have been analysed and included geomorphologic map of the in the first general ltMutnaya catchment.

Adsorption of Copper from an Ammonia-Thiosulfate Media Using DOWEX 550A Ion Exchange Resin

The study of copper adsorption onto ion exchange resins of anionic type is part of the gold recovery from ammonia-thiosulfate solutions, where copper is the main impurity of the system because it acts as a catalyst of gold dissolution reaction. A study is made of the adsorption and desorption of copper in the form of the complex in an ammonia-thiosulfate media on an ion exchange resin, DOWEX 550A, classified as a strong base, which in its inner structure has a quaternary amine functional group. In the studied pH range copper adsorption increased with increasing pH, while the presence of thiosulfate decreased it, the same as the ammonia content, due to the greater presence of cuprotetramine, . Elution of the copper complexes from the resin was more efficient with sulfite than with perchlorate.

Convergence of the turkey gut microbiota following cohabitation under commercial settings

Background:Microbiota development is a critical aspect of turkey poult maturation,and the succession of microbes in the turkey gut has been shown to correlate with poult *** purpose of this study was to determine the fate of the microbiota in turkey poults after movement of birds first raised in an isolated hatch brood system into a more traditional commercial brood facility with pre-existing *** poults were first divided into groups raised in conventional brood pens from day-of-hatch and those raised in an experimental hatch brood *** 11 days of growth,hatch brood birds were moved into pens within the conventional brood barn and monitored for an additional 18 *** of both hatch brood and conventional pen birds was performed at multiple timepoints throughout the study,and cecal content was used to analyze the bacterial microbiota using 16S rRNA gene amplicon ***:Alpha diversity tended to be higher in samples from conventional pen birds compared to those from hatch brood birds prior to the day 11 move,but the difference between systems was not observed *** beta diversity metrics,bacterial community succession appeared delayed in the hatch brood system birds pre-move,but post-move community composition quickly converged with that of the conventional pen *** was validated through assessment of significantly different genera between hatch brood system and conventional pen birds,where numbers of significantly different taxa quickly decreased following the *** key taxa previously associated with poult performance were delayed in their appearance and relative abundance in hatch brood ***:Overall,this study demonstrates that the use of isolated hatch brood systems has an impact on the poult gut microbiota,but its impact is resolved quickly once the birds are introduced into a conventional brood ***,the benefits of pathogen reduction with hatch brood systems may out

Glucagonomas are rare neuroendocrine tumors that arise from cells of the pancreatic islets. Most of them are malignant and usually present as metastatic disease. Sites most commonly involved in metastases are the liver and regional lymph nodes. Bone metastases are rare events and only a few cases have been reported in the literature. We present the case of a 53-year-old male with a medical history of recurrent non-functioning glucagonoma. He presented 17 years after the initial diagnosis with new blastic bone lesions involving the T1 vertebra and the sacrum. Diagnostic steps and medical management in metastatic glucagonoma are also reviewed.

Subclinical hearing loss associated with aging

Objective:Contribute to clarifying the existence of subclinical hearing deficits associated with ***:In this work,we study and compare the auditory perceptual and electrophysiological performance of normal-hearing young and adult subjects(tonal audiometry,high-frequency tone threshold,a triplet of digits in noise,and click-evoked auditory brainstem response).Study sample:45 normal hearing volunteers were evaluated and divided into two groups according to age.27 subjects were included in the“young group”(mean 22.1 years),and 18 subjects(mean 42.22 years)were included in the“adult group.”Results:In the perceptual tests,the adult group presented significantly worse tonal thresholds in the high frequencies(12 and 16 kHz)and worse performance in the digit triplet tests in *** the electrophysiological test using the auditory brainstem response technique,the adult group presented significantly lower I and V wave amplitudes and higher V wave latencies at the supra-threshold *** the threshold level,we observed a significantly higher latency in wave V in the adult *** addition,in the partial correlation analysis,controlling for the hearing level,we observed a relationship(negative)between age and speech in noise performance and high-frequency *** significant association was observed between age and the auditory brainstem ***:The results are compatible with subclinical hearing loss associated with aging.

The study of multi-modal communication has only recently been extended to innate and learned interactions between flowers and their animal visitors, and usually only to pollinators. Here we studied the relevance of floral scent and visual display of a night blooming, putatively hawkmoth-pollinated plant Oenothera acaulis （Onagraceae） in the attraction of non-native cockroaches Blatta orientalis （Blattodea： Blattidae）, which function as facultative floral larcenists in coastal habitats of central Chile. We experimentally decoupled visual （corolla） and olfactory （fragrance） stimuli by presenting paper corollas and green mesh bags, with or without a freshly-picked natural flower inside. We then contrasted the behavioral responses of roaches in these treatments with those to the natural combination of traits in actual flowers and their respective control treatments, measuring the roaches＇ frequency of first visits, mean and total residence time spent in each treatment. The roaches primarily used olfactory cues when approaching O. acaulis flowers at two biologically relevant spatial scales. In addition, the presence of conspecific roaches had a strong influence on recruitment to the experimental arena, increasing the statistical differences among treatments. Our results suggest a primacy of floral fragrance over visual stimuli in the foraging responses of B. orientalis. Olfactory cues were necessary and sufficient to attract the roaches, and the visual cues presented in our manipulations only marginally increased their attraction within a 20 cm diameter of the stimulus. The full spectrum of floral visitation behavior was not elicited by the artificial flowers, suggesting the need for additional tactile or contact chemosensory stimuli not provided by paper. The systemic nature of cirrhosis and portal hypertension has long been recognized,and the amount of data characterizing the interplay between each system is becoming ever so *** involvement was among the first described associated entities in cirrhosis,with reports dating back to the late nineteenth ***,it appears that throughout the years,interest in the pulmonary complications of portal hypertension has generally faded,especially in contrast to other decompensating events,as expertise in this field has primarily been concentrated in highly experienced tertiary care facilities and liver transplantation *** affecting up to 10%-15%of patients with advanced liver disease and having a proven prognostic impact,hepato-pulmonary syndrome,porto-pulmonary hypertension,and hepatic hydrothorax are frequently misdiagnosed,mistreated,or *** lack of precision might adversely impact patient care,referral to expert centers,and,ultimately,liver disease-related mortality and successful transplantation *** present minireview aims to increase awareness of the pulmonary complications of chronic liver disease by providing a brief overview of each of the three *** paper focuses on the essential theoretical aspects,addressing the most critical knowledge gaps on the one hand and,on the other hand,critically discussing one key issue for each complication.

Organic coating of 1-2-nm-size silicon nanoparticles： Effect on particle properties

Photoluminescent silicon nanoparticles 1-2 nm in size were synthesized by a wet chemical procedure and derivatized with propylamine （NH2SiNP）. Surface NH2 groups were used as linkers for additional poly（ethylene glycol）（PEG） and folic acid （Fo） attachment （PEG-NHSiNP and Fo-NHSiNP, respectively） to enable efficient targeting of the particles to tumors and inflammatory sites. The particles were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, ζ potential, dynamic light scattering, and time-resolved anisotropy. The photophysical properties and photosensitizing capacity of the particles and their interaction with proteins was dependent on the nature of the attached molecules. While PEG attachment did not alter the photophysical behavior of NH2SiNP, the attachment of Fo diminished particle photoluminescence. Particles retained the capacity for 1O2 generation; however, efficient 1O2 quenching by the attached surface groups may be a drawback when using these particles as 1O2photosensitizers. In addition, Fo attachment provided particles with the capacity to generate the superoxide anion radical （O2-）. The particles were able to bind tryptophan residues of bovine serum albumin （BSA） within quenching distances. NH2SiNP and PEG-NHSLNP ground state complexes with BSA showed binding constants of （3.1 ± 0.3） × 10^4 and （1.3 ±0.4） × 10^3 M-1, respectively. The lower value observed for PEG-NHSiNP complexes indicates that surface PEGylation leads to a reduction in protein adsorption, which is required to prevent opsonization. An increase in particle luminescence upon BSA binding was attributed to the hydrophobic environment generated by the protein. NH2SiNP-BSA complexes were also capable of resonance energy transfer.

Vergence eye movements are the inward and outward rotation of the eyes responsible for binocular *** studies have mapped and investigated the neural substrates of vergence,it is not well understood whether vergence eye movements evoke the blood oxygen level-dependent signal reliably in separate experimental *** test-retest reliability of stimulus-induced vergence eye movement tasks during a functional magnetic resonance imaging(fMRI)experiment is important for future randomized clinical trials(RCTs).In this study,we established region of interest(ROI)masks for the vergence neural ***-seven binocularly normal young adults participated in two functional imaging sessions measured on different days on the same 3 T Siemens *** fMRI experiments used a block design of sustained visual fixation and rest blocks interleaved between task blocks that stimulated eight or four vergence eye *** test-retest reliability of task-activation was assessed using the intraclass correlation coefficient(ICC),and that of spatial extent was assessed using the Dice *** activation during the vergence eye movement task of eight movements compared to rest was repeatable within the primary visual cortex(ICC=0.8),parietal eye fields(ICC=0.6),supplementary eye field(ICC=0.5),frontal eye fields(ICC=0.5),and oculomotor vermis(ICC=0.6).The results demonstrate significant test-retest reliability in the ROIs of the vergence neural substrates for functional activation magnitude and spatial extent using the stimulus protocol of a task block stimulating eight vergence eye movements compared to sustained *** ROIs can be used in future longitudinal RCTs to study patient populations with vergence dysfunctions.

The Effect of Cortex Lycii on Rattus norvegicus’ Blood Glucose Level Using a High Glucose Diet

One of the primary problems in the United States is diabetes. Cortex Lycii is an herb from Asia mostly used in traditional Chinese medicine. Although its main purpose is not for lowering blood glucose levels, there are studies on Cortex Lycii with other substances which have proven it can lower glucose level in type 2 diabetes rat. Unlike other experiments, this experiment only used Cortex Lycii as a single unit to see if there was any effect on blood glucose level. Also an observation was done on if Cortex Lycii could reduce blood glucose level after ingesting a high glucose diet. Rattus norvegicus was used in this project and in order for the subject to consume Cortex Lycii, the herb was boiled and the liquid was given for consumption. In order to increase the rats’ glucose levels, corn syrup and white sugar were added to the mixture. The data showed significant decrease of blood glucose when Cortex Lycii liquid was ingested. This research has shown that Cortex Lycii can be a potential treatment for hyperglycemia or diabetes. With further research, there can be an alternative treatment rather than injecting external hormones (Insulin).
