Process stability and microbial community composition in pig manure and food waste anaerobic co-digesters operated at low HRTs

This study assessed the effects of reducing hydraulic retention times （HRTs） from 21 days to 10.5 days when anaerobically co-digesting pig manure and food waste. Continuously stirred tank reactors of 3.75 L working volume were operated in triplicate at 42℃. Digester HRT was progressively decreased from 21 to 15 days to 10.5 days, with an associated increase in organic loading rate （OLR） from 3.1 kg volatile solids （VS）·m^-***^-1 to 5.1 kg VS·m^***-1 to 7.25 kg VS.m^-3·day^-1. Reducing HRT from 21 days to 15 days caused a decrease in specific methane yields and VS removal rates. Operation at a HRT of 10.5 days initially resulted in the accumulation of isobutyric acid in each reactor. High throughput 16S rRNA gene sequencing revealed that this increase coincided with a shift in acidogenic bacterial populations, which most likely resulted in the increased isobutyric acid concentrations. This may in turn have caused the increase in relative abundance of Clocamonaceae bacteria, which syntrophically degrade non-acetate volatile fatty acids （VFAs） into H2 and CO2. This, along with the increase in abundance of other syntrophic VFA oxidizers, such as Spiorchatetes, suggests that VFA oxidation plays a role in digester operation at low HRTs. Reducing the HRT to below 21 days compromised the ability of the anaerobic digestion system to reduce enteric indicator organism counts below regulatory limits.

Antibiotic resistance has emerged as a major global threat to human health. Among the strategies employed by pathogens to acquire resistance the use of metallo-β-lactamases (mBLs), a family of dinuclear metalloenzymes, is among the most potent. mBLs are subdivided into three groups (i.e. B1, B2 and B3) with most of the virulence factors belonging to the B1 group. The recent discovery of AIm-1, a B3-type mBL, however, has illustrated the potential health threat of this group of mBLs. Here, we employed a bioinformatics approach to identify and characterize novel B3-type mBLs from Novosphingobium pentaromativorans and Simiduia agarivorans. These enzymes may not yet pose a direct risk to human health, but their structures and function may provide important insight into the design and synthesis of a still elusive universal mBL inhibitor.

Tungsten ditelluride(WTe_(2))is a layered transition metal dichalcogenide(TmD)that has attracted increasing research inter-est in recent ***_(2) has demonstrated large non-saturating magnetoresistance,potential for spintronic applications and promise as a type-II Weyl *** majority of works on WTe_(2) have relied on mechanically exfoliated flakes from chemical vapour transport(CVT)-grown crystals for their *** producing high-quality samples,this method is hindered by several disadvantages including long synthesis time,high-temperature annealing and an inherent lack of *** this work,a synthesis method is demonstrated that allows the production of large-area polycrystalline films of WTe_(2).This is achieved by the reaction of pre-deposited films of W and Te at a relatively low temperature of 550℃.Sputter X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reveals the rapid but self-limiting nature of the oxidation of these WTe_(2) films in ambient *** WTe_(2) films are composed of areas of micrometre-sized nanobelts that can be isolated and offer potential as an alternative to CVT-grown *** nanobelts are highly crystalline with low defect densities indicated by transmission electron microscopy and show promising initial electrical results.
