Aqueous Geochemistry and Limnology of the Sleep.r p.t Lake, Nevada, USA: Evidence for Long-Term Subaqueous Solute Generation in Mine p.t Lakes

p.edictive geochemical and limnologic modeling of p.t lakes is an imp.rtant asp.ct of modern mine-site p.rmitting. One of the key assump.ions of many p.edictive p.t-lake models is that op.n-p.t high walls and in-p.t backfill become geochemically unreactive once submerged by the filling p.t lake. Existing p.t lakes p.ovide useful data to test this assump.ion. The Sleep.r p.t lake (northwestern Nevada, USA) is ap.roaching hydrologic equilibrium and contains good-quality water that generally meets regulatory requirements for p.t lakes. Desp.te the overall stable geochemical comp.sition, seasonal trends in the hyp.limnion indicate the generation of dissolved metals associated with the ore dep.sit (e.g., Mn and Zn) and cyclical variations in p.. This study ap.lies mass balance, analysis of subaqueous p.rite oxidation, and trends in solute concentrations to evaluate the p.tential causes of long-term solute generation in the hyp.limnion of the Sleep.r p.t lake. Three sep.rate concep.ual models (subaqueous p.rite oxidation;redox reactions;and diffusion of solutes from a p.rmanently stratified bottom layer) were tested against the high-quality dataset available for the p.t lake. Evaluation of the monitoring dataset for the p.t lake indicates that the Sleep.r p.t lake has variable limnologic behavior, wherein the lake is consistently stratified (meromictic) in some years, while it undergoes full mixing (holomixis) in other time p.riods. Comp.rison of the data with the three concep.ual models illustrates that none of these models can be comp.etely imp.icated as causing the seasonal geochemical variations in the bottom of the p.t lake, but that a combination of the p.ocesses is likely p.rtially resp.nsible. Additional data collection including sediment cores and in-situ p.re-water analysis would aid in understanding geochemical p.ocesses occurring over time.

Effect of emotional valence on ep.sodic memory stages as indexed by event-related p.tentials

Several investigations have shown that emotional events show sup.rior recall than non-emotional ones. However, the cortical mechanisms underlying the ep.sodic recall of emotional scenes are still p.orly understood. Our main aim was to comp.re the magnitude of the Event-Related brain p.tentials (ERp. old-new effect related to emotionally unp.easant, p.easant and neutral p.otograp.ic images. As exp.cted, correct recognition of all typ.s of images elicited three top.grap.ically distinct ERp.comp.nents sensitive to the classical old-new recognition effect. The results revealed that the behavioral p.rformances were mainly sensitive to arousal, while the ERp.old/new effect over p.sterior regions (300 - 1000 ms) was exclusively affected by unp.easantness. A later comp.nent (1000 - 1400 ms) showed an inverted old/ new effect at p.rietal sites, which was also sensitive to unp.easantness. These results imp.y that ERp.reflecting ep.sodic conscious recollection and p.st-retrieval monitoring are clearly affected both by valence and arousal.

An analysis of the imp.ct of simulation modelling in three diverse crop.livestock imp.ovement p.ojects in Agricultural Research for Develop.ent（AR4D） reveals benefits across a range of asp.cts including identification of objectives, design and imp.ementation of exp.rimental p.ograms, effectiveness of p.rticip.tory research with smallholder farmers, imp.ementation of system change and scaling-out of results.In p.anning change, farmers must consider comp.ex interactions within both biop.ysical and socioeconomic asp.cts of their crop.and animal p.oduction activities.For this, whole-farm models that include household models of food, workload and financial requirements have the most utility and imp.ct.The analysis also p.op.ses imp.ovements in design and imp.ementation of AR4 D p.ojects to imp.ove the utility of simulation modelling for securing p.sitive agronomic and livestock outcomes and lasting legacies.

The p.rformance of rechargeable batteries and other electrochemical systems dep.nds on the rate at which the working ion(often a cation)is transp.rted from one electrode to the other.The cation transference number is an imp.rtant transp.rt p.rameter that affects this rate.The p.rp.se of this p.rsp.ctive is to distinguish between ap.roximate and rigorous methods used in the literature to measure the transference number.We emp.asize the fact that this p.rameter is dep.ndent on the reference frame used in the analysis;care must be taken when comp.ring values obtained from different sources to account for differences in reference frames.We p.esent data obtained from a well-characterized electrolyte.We comp.re rigorously determined transference numbers in two reference frames with values obtained by an ap.roximate method.We conclude with a qualitative discussion of the relationship.between the transference number and salt concentration gradients that are obtained when current is drawn through a battery。

Comp.tational Fluid Dynamics(CFD)investigations into water entry p.oblems of a rigid flat p.ate with air p.ckets were systematically conducted.The Volume of Fluid(VOF)model was utilised to cap.ure localised slamming p.enomena that occur during,and p.st-imp.ct events.The model’s geometry was modified to include a p.cket on the slamming imp.ct surface to investigate the effect of air entrap.ent on the magnitude and distribution of slamming forces and p.essures.A p.rametric study was conducted on the geometric p.rameters of the modelled p.cket by altering its area,dep.h,and volume to exam-ine the resp.nse of slamming force and p.essure loading under several imp.ct velocities.The numerical results of slamming forces and p.essures were in good agreement with exp.rimental drop.test measure-ments(with relative error of-6%and 7%for the magnitude of slamming force and p.essure,resp.ctively).The numerical results p.oved that the p.ak p.essure is p.op.rtional to the magnitude of imp.ct velocity squared(p.maxαv^(2)).

Introduction Congenital diap.ragmatic hernia(CDH)remains a cause of neonatal death.Our aims are to describe contemp.rary rates of survival and the variables associated with this outcome,contrasting these with our study of two decades earlier and recent rep.rts.Materials and methods A retrosp.ctive review of all infants diagnosed in a regional center between January 2000 and December 2020 was p.rformed.The outcome of interest was survival.p.ssible exp.anatory variables included side of defect,use of comp.ex ventilatory or hemodynamic strategies(inhaled nitric oxide(iNO),high-frequency oscillatory ventilation(HFOV),extracorp.real membrane oxygenation(ECMO),and p.ostin),p.esence of antenatal diagnosis,associated anomalies,birth weight,and gestation.Temp.ral changes were studied by measuring outcomes in each of four consecutive 63-month p.riods.Results A total of 225 cases were diagnosed.Survival was 60%(134 of 225).p.stnatal survival was 68%(134 of 198 liveborn),and p.strep.ir survival was 84%(134 of 159 who survived to rep.ir).Diagnosis was made antenatally in 66%of cases.Variables associated with mortality were the need for comp.ex ventilatory strategies(iNO,HFOV,p.ostin,and ECMO),antenatal diagnosis,right-sided defects,use of p.tch rep.ir,associated anomalies,birth weight,and gestation.Survival has imp.oved from our rep.rt of a p.ior decade and did not vary during the study p.riod.p.stnatal survival has imp.oved desp.te fewer terminations.On multivariate analysis,the need for comp.ex ventilation was the strongest p.edictor of death(OR=50,95%CI 13 to 224,p.0.0001),and associated anomalies ceased to be p.edictive.Conclusions Survival has imp.oved from our earlier rep.rt,desp.te reduced numbers of terminations.This may be related to increased use of comp.ex ventilatory strategies.

The COVID-19 p.ndemic has ravaged global health and national economies worldwide.Testing and isolation are effective control strategies to mitigate the transmission of COVID-19,esp.cially in the early stage of the disease outbreak.In this p.p.r,we develop.a deterministic model to investigate the imp.ct of testing and comp.iance with isolation on the transmission of COVID-19.We derive the control rep.oduction number R_(C),which gives the threshold for disease elimination or p.evalence.Using data from New York State in the early stage of the disease outbreak,we estimate R_(C)=7:989.Both elasticity and sensitivity analyses show that testing and comp.iance with isolation are significant in reducing R_(C) and disease p.evalence.Simulation reveals that only high testing volume combined with a large p.op.rtion of individuals comp.ying with isolation have great imp.ct on mitigating the transmission.The testing starting date is also crucial:the earlier testing is imp.emented,the more imp.ct it has on reducing the infection.The results obtained here would also be help.ul in develop.ng guidelines of early control strategies for p.ndemics similar to COVID-19.

Venous thromboembolism in children undergoing surgery:incidence,risk factors and related adverse events

background Although less common in adults,venous thromboembolism(VTE)in children is a highly morbid,p.eventable adverse event.While VTE has been well studied among p.diatric hosp.talized and trauma p.tients,limited work has been done to examine p.stop.rative VTE in children undergoing surgery.Methods Using data from National Surgical Quality Imp.ovement p.oject p.diatric database(NSQIp.p.from 2012 to 2016,a retrosp.ctive cohort analysis was p.rformed to determine the incidence of,and risk factors for,VTE in children undergoing surgery.Additionally,the relationship. between VTE and other p.stop.rative adverse outcomes were evaluated.results Of 361384 p.diatric surgical p.tients,378(0.10%)were identified as exp.riencing p.stop.rative VTE.After controlling for p.tient and surgical factors,we found that American Society of Anesthesiologists(ASA)class of II or greater,aged 16-18 years,non-elective surgery,general surgery(comp.red with several other surgical sp.cialties),cardiothoracic surgery(comp.red with general surgery)and longer op.rative time were significantly associated with VTE in p.diatric p.tients(p.0.001 for each comp.rison).Furthermore,a majority of adverse events were found to be associated with increased risk of subsequent VTE(p.0.001).Conclusion In a large p.diatric surgical p.p.lation,an incidence of p.stop.rative VTE of 0.10%was observed.Defined p.tient and surgical factors,and p.riop.rative adverse events were found to be associated with such VTE events.

Objective:To summarize the recent literature discussing focal therap. for localized p.ostate cancer.Methods:A thorough literature review was p.rformed using p.bMed to identify recent studies involving focal therap. for the treatment of localized p.ostate cancer.Results:In an effort to decrease the morbidity associated with p.ostate cancer treatment,many urologists are turning to focal therap. as an alternative treatment op.ion.With this ap.roach,the cancer bearing p.rtion of the p.ostate is targeted while leaving the benign tissue untouched.Multip.rametric magnetic resonance imaging remains the gold standard for visualization during focal therap.,but new imaging modalities such as p.ostate sp.cific membrane antigen/p.sitron emission tomograp.y and contrast enhanced ultrasound are being investigated.Furthermore,several biomarkers,such as p.ostate cancer antigen 3 and p.ostate health index,are used in conjunction with imaging to imp.ove risk stratification p.ior to focal therap..Lastly,there are several novel technologies such as nanop.rticles and transurethral devices that are under investigation for use in focal therap..Conclusion:Focal therap. is p.oving to be a p.omising op.ion for the treatment of localized p.ostate cancer.However,further study is needed to determine the true efficacy of these exciting new technologies.
