PURPOSe: local recurrence and cure rates following abdominoperineal resections have been reported to be much worse than sphincter-preserving anterior resections. we compared the oncologic outcomes of patients treated by abdominoperineal resections with those following sphincter-preserving anterior resections. MeTHODS: The medical records of patients who underwent radical rectal resection for rectal carcinoma at the Colorectal Surgery Department, Singapore General Hospital, during the period from April 1989 to April 2002 were reviewed. A total of 791 cases were studied. Operative procedures were classified as either abdominoperineal resections or anterior resections with either straight or pouch anastomosis. Total mesorectal excision was routinely performed for carcinomas of the lower middle and lower third of the rectum. Sentinel events, including local and systemic recurrences or morbidity and mortality, were tracked prospectively. ReSUlTS: There were a total of 93 abdominoperineal resections (12.1 percent), 547 anterior resections with straight anastomoses (71 percent), and 130 anterior resections with pouch anastomoses (16.9 percent). Postoperative mortality was 2.6 percent and postoperative morbidity was 13.6 percent with an overall anastomotic leakage rate of 2.5 percent. The cumulative five-year local recurrence rate was 5.4 percent for abdominoperineal resections, 3.6 percent for anterior resections with straight anastomoses, and 3.8 percent for anterior resections with pouch anastomoses (P = 0.73 by log-rank test). The median time to local recurrence also did not differ significantly between the different procedures (abdominoperineal resections, 17 months, anterior resections with straight anastomoses, 18 months, anterior resections with pouch anastomoses, 13 months). Independent predictors for local recurrence included advanced tumor stage, tumor depth, and poorly differentiated tumors. The five-year cancer-specific survival was 70 percent. The type of anas

Superconducting materials with high critical temperature have the potential to revolutionize many fields,including military,electronic communications,and power ***,scientists around the world have been tirelessly working with the ultimate goal of achieving high-temperature *** 2023,a preprint by lee et *** South Korea claimed the discovery of ultra-high-temperature superconductivity with a critical temperature of up to 423 K in Cu-doped lead-apatite(lK-99)(arXiv:2307.12008,arXiv:2307.12037),which caused a worldwide sensation and ***,the electronic structures,phonon dynamics,and electrical conductivities of lK-99 and its parent compound lead-apatite have been calculated using first-principles *** results show that the lead-apatite compound and the lK-99 compound are insulator and half-metal *** flat band characteristic is consistent with previous *** electrical conductivity of the lK-99 compound shows two extreme points,and the electrical conductivity along the C-axis increases significantly after 400 *** phonon dispersion spectra of the compounds were investigated,demonstrating their dynamic instability.

Simplified seismic scenario analysis of existing masonry buildings accounting for local site effects

This study discusses the effects of local sites and hazard amplification on the seismic vulnerability assessment of existing masonry *** this context,a rapid seismic evaluation procedure was implemented on an old masonry building stock in the historical center Galata,located inİstanbul,to determine the seismic risk priority of the built *** scenarios were generated for all soil classes,different moment magnitudes,and source-to-site distances to obtain more accurate results for the seismic vulnerability assessment of the studied building ***,damage distributions estimated under nine different scenarios with/without site effects were compared and illustrated in maps to discuss changes in vulnerability owing to amplification *** this study,by re-examining the rapid seismic evaluation procedure by including geo-hazard-based assessment,the importance of site effects on the vulnerability and risk assessment of built heritage was *** proposed framework integrating field data and local site effects is believed to advance the current applications for vulnerability assessment of masonry buildings and provide an improvement in the application of rapid seismic assessment procedures with more reliable results.

In[***.A 107012427(2023)],Baldwin and Jones prove that Uhlmann–Jozsa’s fidelity between two quantum statesρandσ,i.e.,F(ρ,σ)=(Tr√√ρσ√ρ)^(2),can be written in a simplified form as F(ρ,σ)=(Tr√ρσ)^(2).In this article,we give an alternative proof of this result,using a function power series expansion and the properties of the trace *** approach not only reinforces the validity of the simplified expression but also facilitates the exploration of novel dissimilarity functions for quantum states and more complex trace functions of density operators.

Highly enhanced UV absorption and light emission of monolayer wS_(2)through hybridization with Ti_(2)N MXene quantum dots and g-C_(3)N_(4)quantum dots

Two-dimensional(2D)transition metal dichalcogenides(TMD)are atomically thin semiconductors with promising optoelectronic applications across the visible ***,their intrinsically weak light absorption and the low photoluminescence quantum yield(PlQY)restrict their performance and potential use,especially in ultraviolet(UV)wavelength light *** dots(QD)derived from 2D materials(2D/QD)provide efficient light absorption and emission of which energy can be tuned for desirable light *** this study,we greatly enhanced the photon absorption and PlQY of monolayer(1l)tungsten disulfide(wS_(2))in the UV range via hybridization with 2D/QD,particularly titanium nitride MXene QD(Ti_(2)N MQD)and graphitic carbon nitride QD(GCNQD).with the hybridization of MQD or GCNQD,1lwS_(2)showed a maximum Pl enhancement by 15 times with 300 nm wavelength excitation,while no noticeable enhancement was observed when the excitation photon energy was less than the bandgap of the QD,indicating that UV absorption by the QD played a crucial role in enhancing the light emission of 1l-wS_(2)in our 0D/2D hybrid *** findings present a convenient method for enhancing the photo-response of 1l-wS_(2)to UV light and offer exciting possibilities for harvesting UV energy using 1l-TMD.

when Fleeing Matters:Differences in escape Behaviours of Three Northeast Asian Anurans

Prey species may have their own optimal escape strategy to balance predation risks and the energetic cost of *** species have an advantage when maintaining a short fleeing distance,while others may favour an earlier escape based on microhabitat,size,or body ***,we examined the escape behaviour of the three syntopic Northeast Asian anuran species:Mongolian toads(Strauchbufo raddei),Amur brown frogs(Rana amurensis),and Japanese treefrogs(Dryophytes japonicus)in Mongolia,Russia,China and DPR *** examined flight initiation distance(FID;the distance from a potential predator to the point when the individual starts to flee)and distance fled(DF;distance between flight initiation and flight termination points)of each species and the effects of microhabitat,sex,and body *** raddei and *** had a longer FID than ***,and *** also had a longer DF than *** trends remained similar when dividing FID and DF by a size proxy(snout-vent length)for all *** suggests that the treefrog *** used a strategy to stay immobile even when they were detected,and the toad *** reacted quicker and more sensitively to predators despite the presence of *** *** had a significantly longer FID than males suggesting that females are more sensitive to predation risk in this species,but body size was not significant for any of the three *** results indicate that the three sympatric species have different escaping strategies,likely related to differences in physiology and crypticity.

Performance of evolutionary optimized machine learning for modeling total organic carbon in core samples of shale gas fields

Rock samples'TOC content is the best indicator of the organic matter in source *** origin rock samples’analysis is used to calculate it manually by *** method requires time and resources because it relies on samples from many well intervals in source ***,research has been done to aid this *** learning algorithms can estimate total organic carbon instead of well logs and stratigraphic *** light of these efforts,the current work present a study on automating the total organic carbon estimation using machine learning approaches improved by an evolutionary methodology to give the model flexibility and *** algorithms,differential evolution,particle swarm optimization,grey wolf optimization,artificial bee colony,and evolution strategies were used to improve machine learning models to predict *** six metaheuristics were integrated into four machine learning methods:extreme learning machine,elastic net linear model,linear support vector regression,and multivariate adaptive regression *** samples from the YuDong-Nan shale gas field,located in the Sichuan basin,were used to evaluate the hybrid *** findings show that combining machine learning models with an evolutionary algorithms in a hybrid fashion produce flexible models that accurately predict *** results show that,independent of the metaheuristic used to guide the model selection,optimized extreme learning machines attained the best performance scores according to six *** hybrid models can be used in exploratory geological research,particularly for unconventional oil and gas resources.
