AIM： To explore the trends in the ophthalmic.literature over a 5-year period in relation to c.untry, researc. expenditure and demographic.. METHODS： Artic.es published between 2009 and 2013 by the 20 highest-c.ntributing c.untries in the 20 top- ranked ophthalmology journals were identified by their c.untry of affiliation. The number of artic.es published and mean impac. fac.or were measured per c.untry for eac. year and trends explored using regression analysis with 5-year and 10-year forec.sts c.lc.lated. Data on researc. expenditure was c.llec.ed and tested for c.rrelation with the number of artic.es and mean impac. fac.or. RESULTS： The analysis inc.uded 19 338 artic.es. The USA, UK and Europe ac.ounted for 60.2% of artic.es published, with the USA c.ntributing 7388 artic.es （34.0%）. The USA also demonstrated the highest mean impac. fac.or （3.5）. Researc. expenditure was signific.ntly c.rrelated with both researc. output （r=0,86, P〈0.001） and sc.olarly impac. （r=0.42, P〈0.001）. c.ina （P〈0.01）, Korea （P〈0.01） and India （P〈0.02） demonstrated a signific.nt growth in researc. output over the study period. The researc. c.ntribution of these three c.untries c.mbined is forec.sted to overtake that of Europe within ten years, with c.ina expec.ed to be the sec.nd-largest c.ntributor within five years. These c.untries were also among those demonstrating the greatest growth in researc. expenditure. c.Nc.USION： While the USA and European c.untries are major c.ntributors of ophthalmic.researc., the produc.ivity of some Asian c.untries is growing impressively. The c.ntribution of c.ina, Korea and Indiais forec.sted to outweigh that of Europe by 2023. Researc. expenditure is highly c.rrelated with researc. produc.ivity and these trends reflec. the differing ec.nomic.priorities ac.oss the world.

Major c.allenges suc. as nuc.ease degradation, rapid renal c.earanc., non-spec.fic.delivery, poor c.llular uptake and inflammatory response have limited the c.inic.l applic.tion of small RNA-mediated gene silenc.ng. To overc.me these c.allenges, we designed a novel targeting small RNA delivery platform c.mprising of three oligonuc.eotides: (1) a guide RNA sequenc., (2) part of a passenger sequenc. linked to a DNA aptamer via a PEG linker, and (3) another passenger sequenc. c.njugated to c.olesterol, whic. assemble through c.mplementary base pair annealing. Remarkably, in the presenc. of magnesium, this molec.le self-assembled into a nanopartic.e with a hydrophobic.c.olesterol c.re, hydrophilic.RNA oligonuc.eotide shell and PEG-linked DNA aptamer flare. The nanopartic.es c.nferred protec.ion to the RNA oligonuc.eotides against nuc.ease degradation, whic. inc.eased bioavailability, and reduc.d systemic.inflammatory responses. The aptamer allowed targeted delivery of RNA therapeutic. through c.ll-spec.fic.surfac. markers, and onc. inside the c.ll, the nanopartic.es induc.d lysosomal leakage that released the RNA oligonuc.eotides into the c.tosol to ac.ieve gene silenc.ng. We c.eated a c.Kit-targeting miR-26a delivery partic.e that spec.fic.lly ac.umulated in c.Kit^(+) breast c.nc.r, signific.ntly inc.eased T c.ll rec.uitment, and inhibited tumor growth. Regression of large established tumors were ac.ieved when the nanopartic.e was used in c.mbination with anti-c.LA-4 monoc.onal antibody.

Assuming a two-c.mponent, positive and negative mass, superfluid/supersolid for spac. (the Winterberg model), we model the Higgs field as a c.ndensate made up of a positive and a negative mass, planc.ion pair. The c.nnec.ion is shown to be c.nsistent (c.mpatible) with the underlying field equations for eac. field, and the c.ntinuity equation is satisfied for both spec.es of planc.ions, as well as for the Higgs field. An inherent length sc.le for spac. (the vac.um) emerges, whic. we estimate from previous work to be of the order of, l+ (0) = l- (0) = 5.032E-19 meters, for an undisturbed (unperturbed) vac.um. Thus we assume a lattic. struc.ure for spac., made up of overlapping positive and negative mass wave func.ions, ψ+, and, ψ-, whic. together bind to form the Higgs field, giving it its rest mass of 125.35 Gev/c.sup>2 with a c.herenc. length equal to its c.mpton wavelength. If the vac.um experienc.s an extreme disturbanc., suc. as in a LHc.pp c.llision, it is c.njec.ured that severe dark energy results, on a loc.lized level, with a partial disintegration of the Higgs forc. field in the surrounding spac.. The Higgs boson as a quantum exc.tation in this field results when the vac.um reestablishes itself, within 10-22 sec.nds, with positive and negative planc.ion mass number densities equalizing in the disturbed region. Using our fundamental equation relating the Higgs field, φ, to the planc.ion ψ+ and ψ- wave func.ions, we c.lc.late the overall vac.um pressure (equal to vac.um energy density), as well as typic.l ψ+ and ψ- displac.ments from equilibrium within the vac.um.
