The discrete element model （DEM） is a very promising modelling strategy for two-phase granular systems. However, owing to a lack of experimental measurements, validation of numerical simulations of two-phase granular systems is still an important issue. In this study, a small two-dimensional gas- fluidized bed was simulated using a discrete element model. The dimensions of the simulated bed were 44mm × 10mm × 120 mm and the fluidized particles had a diameter dp = 1.2 mm and density ρp = 1000 kg/m^3. The comparison between DEM simulations and experiments are performed on the basis of time-averaged voidage maps. The drag-law of Beetstra et al. [Beetstra, R., van der Hoef, M.A., ＆ Kuipers,J. A. M. （2007b）. Drag force of intermediate Reynolds number flow past mono- and bidispersed arrays of spheres. AIchE Journal, 53,489-501 ] seems to give the best results. The simulations are fairly insensitive to the coefficient of restitution and the coefficient of friction as long as some route of energy dissipation during particle-particle and particle-wall contact is provided. changing the boundary condition of the gas phase at the side-walls from zero-slip to full-slip does not affect the simulation results. care is to be taken that the cell sizes are chosen so that a reasonable number of particles can be found in a fluid cell.

AIM: To explore dendritic cells (Dcs) multiple functions in immune modulation. METHODS: We used bone-marrow derived dendritic cells from BALB/c mice pulsed with pseudo particles from the hepatitis c virus to vaccinate naive BALB/c mice. Hepatitis c virus (HcV) pseudo particles consist of the genotype 1b derived envelope proteins E1 and E2, covering a non-HcV core structure. Thus, not a single epitope, but the whole "viral surface" induces immunogenicity. For vaccination, mature and activated Dc were injected subcutaneously twice. RESULTS: Humoral and cellular immune responses measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and interferon-gamma enzyme-linked immunosorbent spot test showed antibody production as well as T-cellsdirected against HcV. Furthermore, T-cell responses confi rmed two highly immunogenic regions in E1 and E2 outside the hypervariable region 1. cONcLUSION: Our results indicate dendritic cells as a promising vaccination model for HcV infection that should be evaluated further.

Aims We tested whether—in addition to weather conditions—the concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus in the substrate have an effect on the radial stem increment of Nothofagus dombeyi trees in old-growth forest stands on volcanic soil at the western slopes of the Andes in South-central *** We took soil samples and tree increment cores from five proximate sites(1000-1300 m a.s.l.)that are located in the volcanic region of the conguillío National Park and differ in the age of the substrate(Miocene—3500 years B.P.)and in its concentrations of nitrogen(N)and phosphorus(P).The soil samples were also analysed on their concentrations of other plant mineral nutrients,carbon(c)and nitrogen isotope ratios(δ^(15)N).Tree-ring widths and the stem basal area increment(BAI)were related to climate *** selected tree rings,the stable isotope ratios of carbon(δ^(13)c)and oxygen(δ^(18)O)were determined and related to growth and climate *** Findingsconsistent with theory,the soils on the oldest substrate showed the highest(least negative)δ^(15)N values,but mineral N was the only nutrient whose concentration exhibited a straightforward(increasing)relationship with increasing substrate *** BAI was largest on the soil with the highest concentration of plant-available *** contrast to BAI,tree-ring chronologies did not differ among the study ***,tree-ring chronologies and BAI exhibited significantly positive correlations with summer precipitation,and negative correlations,with summer(December)temperature.A negative correlation was found betweenδ^(13)c and precipitation anomalies in the growing season(November-March).We interpret the negative correlations between growth and temperature,and betweenδ^(13)c andδ^(18)O in the tree rings,as an impairment of net carbon assimilation by anomalously warm weather conditions during the growing *** conclude that the growth of *** is mainly affected by high temperature and low precipitation

Dear Editor,Abscisic acid （ABA） induces turgot loss and hence stomatal closure by promoting rapid net K^＋ efflux from guard cells （Gcs） through outward-rectifying K^＋（K^＋out） channels （Schroeder et al., 1987; Blatt, 1990）. The mechanisms of ABA signaling in Gcs are detailed elsewhere （see Munemasa et al., 2015; Weiner et al., 2010; Pandey et al., 2007）. Briefly, ABA binds to the PYR/ PYL/RcARs, a family of soluble steroidogenic acute regulatory- related lipid transfer （START） proteins, and, in turn, inactivates the downstream PP2c （type 2c protein phosphatase）, leading to the activation of SnRK2.6 （SNF1 [sucrose non-fermenting-1- related protein kinase]/OST1 [open stomata 1]） protein kinases.

Postoperative adjunctive bevacizumab versus placebo in primary trabeculectomy surgery for glaucoma

AIM: To compare the effectiveness of postoperative adjunctive use of subconjunctival bevacizumab in altering the outcome of primary trabeculectomy in terms of sustained lowering of intraocular pressure(IOP) and reduction of postoperative bleb vascularization and ***: A prospective, one center, randomized, placebo-control study. Fifty-nine patients(59 eyes) with uncontrolled IOP under maximal tolerated medical treatment(MTMT) were recruited. A primary trabeculectomy with mitomycin c(MMc) was done and the patients were randomized to either postoperative subconjunctival injection of bevacizumab(1.25 mg/0.05 mL) or balanced salt solution(BSS). Forty-seven patients(47 eyes) completed at least one year of follow up and were included in the study. The main outcome measure was the IOP, and secondary outcome measures include bleb morphology, vascularization, and fibrosis, as well as the need for glaucoma medications and 5-fluorouracil(5-FU) ***: At 1-year follow up, there was no significant difference between groups for IOP(P=0.65), bleb morphology(P=0.65), and the need for glaucoma medications(P=0.65) or 5-FU needling requirements(P=0.11). However, the bevacizumab group had a higher rate of success results, lower use of glaucoma medications after surgery, and optimal bleb aspect in more patients, but more 5-FU needling procedures required. cONcLUSION: A bigger sample size is needed in order to determine whether the differences found in the bevacizumab group are statistically significant.

We present GalevNB （Galev for N-body simulations）, a utility that converts fundamental stellar properties of N-body simulations into observational properties using the GALEV （GAlaxy EVolutionary synthesis models） package, and allowing direct comparisons between observations and N-body simulations. It works by converting fundamental stellar properties, such as stellar mass, temperature, luminosity and metallicity into observational magnitudes for a variety of filters used by mainstream instruments/telescopes, such as HST, ESO, SDSS, 2MASS, etc., and into spectra that span the range from far-UV （90 A） to near-IR （160 ~tm）. As an application, we use Ga 1 evNB to investigate the secular evolution of the spectral energy distribution （SED） and color magnitude diagram （cMD） of a simulated star cluster over a few hundred million years. With the results given by GalevNB we discover a UV-excess in the SED of the cluster over the whole simulation time. We also identify four candidates that contribute to the FUV peak： core helium burning stars, second asymptotic giant branch （AGB） stars, white dwarfs and naked helium stars.

Fluoxetine(Prozac^(TM))is the only antidepressant approved by the US Food and Drug Administration(FDA)for the treatment of major depressive disorder(MDD)in *** its considerable efficacy as a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor,the possible long-term effects of fluoxetine on brain development in children are poorly *** the current study,we aimed to delineate molecular mechanisms and protein biomarkers in the brains of juvenile rhesus macaques(Macaca mulatta)one year after the discontinuation of fluoxetine treatment using proteomic and phosphoproteomic *** identified several differences in protein expression and phosphorylation in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex(DLPFc)and cingulate cortex(cc)that correlated with impulsivity in animals,suggesting that the GABAergic synapse pathway may be affected by fluoxetine *** in combination with the identified pathways contribute to a better understanding of the mechanisms underlying the chronic effects of fluoxetine after discontinuation in children.

We outline here an approach for understanding the biology of climate change,one that integrates data at multiple spatial and temporal ***-free trait analysis,or“ecometrics,”is based on the idea that the distribution in a community of ecomorphological traits such as tooth structure,limb proportions,body mass,leaf shape,incubation temperature,claw shape,any aspect of anatomy or physiology can be measured across some subset of the organisms in a *** of temporal or spatial scale,traits are the means by which organisms interact with their environment,biotic and *** measures these interactions by focusing on traits which are easily measurable,whose structure is closely related to their function,and whose function interacts directly with local *** trait distributions are thus a comparatively universal metric for exploring systems dynamics at all *** main challenge now is to move beyond investigating how future climate change will affect the distribution of organisms and how it will impact ecosystem services and to shift the perspective to ask how biotic systems interact with changing climate in general,and how climate change affects the interactions within and between the components of the whole biotic-physical *** believe that it is possible to provide believable,quantitative answers to these *** of this we have initiated an IUBS program iccB(integrative climate change Biology).
