Background: Using ultrasound to measure optic nerve sheath diameter(ONSD) is an emerging bedside technique to noninvasively assess intracranial pressure(iCP) in patients with brain injury. This technique is unique among bedside ultrasonography and is often performed by providers who have no formal ultrasound training. We sought to create a low-cost, 3 D, reusable ONSD model to train neurology, neurosurgery, and critical care providers in measuring ***: We identified 253 articles, of which 15 were associated with models and 2 with simulation. One gelatin model was reported, upon which we based our initial design. We could not validate the visual findings of this model;however, after constructing multiple beta models, the design most representative of human eye anatomy was a globe made of ballistics gel and either a 3 mm, 5 mm, or 7 mm×50 mm 3 D-printed optic nerve inserted into a platform composed of ballistics gel, all of which sat inside a 3 D-printed skull. This model was used to teach ONSD measurements with ultrasound at a continuing medical education event prior to training on a live human ***: A simple 3 D ballistic ONSD model allows learners to practice proper hand placement and pressure, basic landmarks, and ONSD measurement prior to operating on a human eye. This model is replicable and sustainable given that the globe and platform are composed of ballistics gel.

influence of biological sex and exercise on murine cardiac metabolism

Although the structural and functional effects of exercise on the heart are well established,the metabolic changes that occur in the heart during and after exercise remain *** this study,we used metabolomics to assess time-dependent changes in the murine cardiac metabolome following 1 session of treadmill *** the exercise bout,we also recorded blood lactate,glucose,and ketone body levels and measured cardiac mitochondrial *** both male and female mice,moderate-and high-intensity exercise acutely increased blood lactate *** both sexes,low-and moderate-intensity exercise augmented circulating 3-hydroxybutryrate levels immediately after the exercise bout;however,only in female mice did high-intensity exercise increase 3-hydroxybutyrate levels,with significant increases occurring 1 h after the exercise *** metabolomics analyses of sedentary female and male hearts suggest considerable sex-dependent differences in basal cardiac metabolite levels,with female hearts characterized by higher levels of pantothenate,pyridoxamine,homoarginine,tryptophan,and several glycerophospholipid and sphingomyelin species and lower levels of numerous metabolites,including acetyl coenzyme A,glucuronate,gulonate,hydroxyproline,prolyl-hydroxyproline,carnosine,anserine,and carnitinylated and glycinated species,as compared with male *** after a bout of treadmill exercise,both male and female hearts had higher levels of corticosterone;however,female mice showed more extensive exercise-induced changes in the cardiac metabolome,characterized by significant,time-dependent changes in amino acids(e.g.,serine,alanine,tyrosine,tryptophan,branched-chain amino acids)and the ketone body *** from experiments using isolated cardiac mitochondria suggest that high-intensity treadmill exercise does not acutely affect respiration or mitochondrial coupling;however,female cardiac mitochondria demonstrate generally higher adenosi

introduction Nitrate-induced headache is common and may signify responsive cerebral *** assessed the relationship between nitrate headache and outcome in patients with acute *** and methods Patients were those randomised to glyceryl trinitrate(GTN)versus no GTN in the efficacy of nitric oxide in stroke *** of headache by end of treatment(day 7),and functional outcome(modified Rankin Scale,primary outcome)at day 90,were *** are adjusted for baseline prognostic factors and give OR and mean difference(MD)with 95%*** in 4011 patients,headache was more common in GTN than control(360,18.0% vs 170,8.5%;pitrate-related headache was associated with:younger age,female sex,higher diastolic blood pressure,non-total anterior circulation syndrome,milder stroke and absence of dysphasia(pitrate headache was not associated with improved functional outcome(OR 0.90,95% Ci 0.73 to 1.10,p=0.30)or death(day 90)(HR 0.64,95% Ci 0.40 to 1.02,p=0.062),but reduced death or deterioration(day 7)(OR 0.45,95% Ci 0.25 to 0.82),death in hospital(OR 0.44,95% Ci 0.22 to 0.88)and improved activities of daily living(Barthel index,MD 3.7,95% Ci 0.3 to 7.1)and cognition(telephone interview cognitive screen,MD 2.0,95% Ci 0.7 to 3.3)(day 90).Non-nitrate headache was not associated with death,disability or *** and conclusion Development of a nitrate headache by day 7 after stroke may be associated with improved activities of daily living and cognitive impairment at day 90,which was not seen with non-nitrate headache.
