Objective In order to explore the features of discrimination against people with HIV/AIDS in rural areas, a community-based intervention was carried out in two pilot communities of X County of Shanxi Province from September 2002 to October 2003. Methods Data were collected using qualitative methods (in-depth interview and focus group discussion) and anonymously structured questionnaires. Results (1) Severe discrimination against people infected with HIV/AIDS was revealed in the target communities. However, the response to HIV/AIDS was different in each community. (2) People were reluctant to disclose their HIV status or get tested for HIV, which endangered their sexual partners to contract HIV through unprotected sexual intercourses. (3. Attitudes towards people infected with HIV/AIDS varied. (4) Public education promoted a better understanding of HIV/AIDS which in turn improved community attitudes and behaviors towards people with HIV/AIDS. Conclusion HIV/AIDS-related discrimination undermines both individuals and communities responses to HIV/AIDS and may be a serious obstacle towards effective HIV/AIDS prevention and control.

The dose-dependent cytotoxicity effect on human hepatocyte（HL-7702 cells） induced by ＂naked＂ Fe3.4 nanoparticles was assessed through cell viabilities and lactate dehydrogenase（LDH） activities. Three important oxi dative indexes of the cells by glutathione peroxidase（GSH-Px）, superoxide dismutase（SOD） and malondialde hyde（MDA） were determined. The good correlation of the cell viabilities with their GSH-Px, SOD and MDA levels indicated that the cytotoxicity is related to activation of oxidative stress induced by Fe3.4 nanoparticles. The oxida tive stress also leads to corresponding DNA damage in a similar dose-dependent manner, followed by the changes of cell cycle and cell apoptosis. Such work provides important experimental data for the safety evaluation of superpa ramagnetic Fe3.4 nanoparticles.

Cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) is a key participant in the reverse transport of cholesterol from the peripheral tissues to the liver. To understand the role that CETP gene plays in the pathogenesis of coronary heart disease (CHD) , the promoter region, all 16 exons and adjacent intronic regions of CETP gene were screened for single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in 203.CHD patients and 209 controls by a combination of PCR, denaturing high performance liquid chromatography (DHPLC), molecular cloning, and DNA sequencing. A novel missense mutation in the CETP gene was identified. This mutation (L296Q) was a T-to-A conversion at codon 296 of exon 10 which replaced the codon for leucine (CTG) with the codon for glutamine (CAG). Association study revealed that L296Q mutation was associated with CHD with a significantly higher mutant allele frequency in the CHD patients than that in the controls (0. 160 vs. 0.091,x2= 9.014, P = 0.003., and that the odds ratio for the development of CHD was 1.83.for

Human hepatoma and normal liver cells were irradiated with 12C6+ ion beams (LET = 96.05 keV/μm) and γ-rays at Heavy Ion Research Facility in Lanzhou (HIRFL). The chromatid breaks and break types were detected using the premature chromosome con- densation technique. Our experimental results showed that chromatid breaks seem to have a good relation with 12C6+ absorbed dose and 12C6+ are more effective to induce chromatid breaks as compared to the γ-rays. For 12C6+ ion irradiation the major break was isochromatid break, while chromatid breaks were dominant for γ-ray irradiation. We also observed that the Relative Biology Effectiveness (RBE) of 12C6+ ion is about 2.5 times higher than that of γ-rays.

Basaltic magmatism that builds intra-plate ocean islands is often considered to be genetically associated with "hotspots" or "mantle plumes". While there have been many discussions on why ocean island basalts (OIB) are geochemically highly enriched as an integral part of the mantle plume hypothesis, our current understanding on the origin of OIB source material remains unsatisfactory, and some prevailing ideas need revision. One of the most popular views states that OIB source material is recycled oceanic crust (ROC). Among many problems with the ROC model, the ocean crust is simply too depleted (e.g., [La/Sm]PM > 1) OIB. Another popular view states that the enriched component of OIB comes from recycled continental crust (RCC, i.e.; terrigenous sediments). While both CC and OIB are enriched in many incompatible elements (e.g., both have [La/Sm]PM >>1), the CC has characteristic enrichment in Pb and deletion in Nb, Ta, P and Ti. Such signature is too strong to be eliminated such that CC is unsuitable as source material for OIB. Plate tectonics and mantle circulation permit the presence of ROC and RCC materials in mantle source regions of basalts, but they must be volumetrically insignificant in contributing to basalt magmatism. The observation that OIB are not only enriched in incompatible elements, but also enriched in the progressively more incompatible elements indicates that the enriched component of OIB is of magmatic origin and most likely associated with low-degree melt metasomatism. H2O and CO2 rich incipient melt may form in the seismic low velocity zone (LVZ). This melt will rise because of buoyancy and concentrate into a melt rich layer atop the LVZ to metasomatize the growing lithosphere, forming the metasomatic vein lithologies. To investigate the immunosuppressive effect of fluvastatin on the PHA-activated T lymphocytes. T lymphocytes were isolated from the blood of healthy volunteers, cell proliferation and the activation mar- kers expression were examined by flow cytometric analysis. Cytokine secretion was assayed by ELISA. LDH-release assay was used to detect activity of killer cells. NFAT activation was evaluated by TransAMTM ELISA kit. Results were as following. (1) Whereas no modification in CD25 expression was seen, fluvastatin at 5 μM caused a lower level of CD69 expression, accompanied by an essential suppression on proliferation, IL-2 production and cytotoxicity development in PHA-stimulated T cells. However, the level of secreted IL-10 had no change, and the level of IL-4 even experienced a significant increase. (2) Combined with cyclosporine A (CsA), fluvastatin would further repress CD69 expression, cells proliferation and activity of killer cells, meanwhile significantly induced the secretion of IL-4 and IL-10. (3. Fluvastatin treatment also resulted in a strong inhibition of NFAT activation. In conclusion, partly involving the blockage of activation of NFAT, fluvastatin exhibited an immunosuppressive effect in vitro.
