Effects of prostaglandin F_(2α) on small intestinal interstitial cells of Cajal

AIM：To explore the role of prostaglandin F2α（PGF2α） on pacemaker activity in interstitial cells of Cajal（ICC）from mouse small intestine. METhoDS：In this study,effects of PGF2αin the cultured ICC cells were investigated with patch clamp technology combined with Ca 2＋ image analysis. RESULTS：Externally applied PGF2α（10μmol/L）produced membrane depolarization in current-clamp mode and increased tonic inward pacemaker currents in voltage-clamp *** application of flufenamic acid（a non-selective cation channel inhibitor）or niflumic acid（aCl channel inhibitor）abolished the generation of pacemaker currents but only flufenamic acid inhibited the PGF2α-induced tonic inward *** addition,the tonic inward currents induced by PGF2αwere not inhibited by intracellular application of 5’-[-thio]diphosphate trilithium *** with Ca 2＋ free solution, U-73122,an active phospholipase C inhibitor,and thapsigargin,a Ca 2＋ -ATPase inhibitor in endoplasmic reticulum,abolished the generation of pacemaker currents and suppressed the PGF2α-induced tonic inward ***,chelerythrine or calphostin C,protein kinase C inhibitors,did not block the PGF2α-induced effects on pacemaker *** recording intracellular Ca 2＋（[Ca 2＋ ]i）concentration using fluo-3/AM,PGF2α broadly increased the spontaneous[Ca 2＋ ]i oscillations. CONCLUSION：These results suggest that PGF2αcan modulate pacemaker activity of ICC by acting non-selective action channels through phospholipase C-dependent pathway via[Ca2＋]i regulation

This review article provides overall understanding of stainless,environment-friendly,and nonflammable Mg alloys(SEN alloys)recently developed at the Korea Institute of Materials *** alloys are produced by adding small amounts of Ca and Y(eachhose of commercial AZ91 alloys.(5)Simultaneous introduction of Ca and Y suppresses the formation of Mg17Al12 discontinuous precipitates during aging,leading to the enhanced elongation of aged SEN alloys.(6)Adding mischmetal into the SEN9 alloy leads to a six-fold enhancement in ***,the studies conducted on SEN alloys demonstrate their excellent ignition and corrosion resistances and mechanical properties,which broaden the industrial applications of Mg alloys by addressing their inherent weaknesses.

Objective:The purpose of the study was to identify the best sequence of therapy beginning with a tyrosine kinase inhibitor(TKI)as the first-line therapy for patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma(mRCC)in terms of overall survival(OS),progression-free survival(PFS),and rates of discontinuation and adverse effects during the treatment ***:This is a retrospective,nationwide multicenter study of patients with mRCC after diagnosis at 10 different tertiary medical centers in Korea from January 1992 to December *** focused on patients at either“favorable”or“intermediate”risk according to the International mRCC Database Consortium criteria,and they were followed up(median 335 days).Finally,a total of 1409 patients were selected as the study *** generated a Cox proportional hazard model adjusted for covariates,and the different therapy schemes were statistically tested in terms of OS as well as *** addition,frequencies of discontinuation and adverse events were compared among the therapy ***:Of the primary patterns of treatment sequences(24 sequences),“sunitinib epazopanib”and“sunitinibeeverolimuseimmunotherapy”showed the most beneficial results in both OS and PFS with significantly lower hazards than“sunitinib”,which is the most commonly treated agent in *** that the“TKIeTKI”structure showed relatively higher discontinuation rates with higher adverse effects,the overall beneficial sequence would be“sunitinibeeverolimuseimmunotherapy”.Conclusion:Among several sequential therapy starting with TKIs,“sunitinibeeverolimuse immunotherapy”was found to be the best scheme for mRCC patients with“favorable”or“intermediate”risks.

Motor outcomes of patients with a complete middle cerebral artery territory infarct

Detailed knowledge of motor outcomes enables to establish proper goals and rehabilitation strate-gies for stroke patients. Several previous studies have reported functional or motor outcomes in patients with a middle cerebral artery territory infarct. however, little is known about motor outcome in patients with a complete middle cerebral artery territory infarct. In this study, we investigated the motor outcomes in 23 patients with a complete middle cerebral artery territory infarct. All of these patients received comprehensive rehabilitative management, including movement therapy and neuromuscular electrical stimulation of the affected finger extensors and ankle dorsiflexors, for more than 3 months. Motor outcomes were measured at 6 months after stroke onset using the Medical Research Council, Motricity Index, the modified Brunnstrom Classification, and Functional Ambula-tion Category scores. The motor function of the lower extremities was found to be better than that of the upper extremities. After receiving rehabilitation treatments for 3–6 months, about 70% of these patients were able to walk independently （Functional Ambulation Category scores 3）, but no pa-tient achieved functional hand recovery.

Right lower limb apraxia in a patient with left supplementary motor area infarction: intactness of the corticospinal tract confirmed by transcranial magnetic stimulation

We reported a 50-year-old female patient with left supplementary motor area infarction who presented right lower limb apraxia and investigated the possible causes using transcranial magnetic stimulation. The patient was able to walk and climb stairs spontaneously without any assistance at 3 weeks after onset. however, she was unable to intentionally move her right lower limb although she understood what she supposed to do. The motor evoked potential evoked by transcranial magnetic stimulation from the right lower limb was within the normal range, indicating that the corticospinal tract innervating the right lower limb was uninjured. Thus, we thought that her motor dysfunction was not induced by motor weakness, and confirmed her symptoms as aprax- ia. In addition, these results also suggest that transcranial magnetic stimulation is helpful for diagnosing apraxia.

Hydrocephalus can induce secondary parkinsonism（Shahar et al.,1988;Aggarwal et al.,1997;Racette et al.,2004）.Physical factors such as increased ventricular pressure near the upper midbrain and basal ganglia are thought to cause mechanical disruption of dopaminergic systems（i.e.,the nigrostriatal pathways from the medial substantia nigra to the caudate nuclei and putamen and its frontal projection fibers from the basal ganglia）（Asamoto et al., 1998; Yomo et al., 2006）.

Dysphagia in patients with isolated pontine infarction

Little is known about dysphagia after pontine infarction. In this study, we evaluated the incidence of dysphagia after isolated pontine infarction and identified the predictive factors for the occurrence of dysphagia. A total of 146 patients were included in this study. All patients underwent clinical testing for dysphagia within 1 day after admission and at the time of discharge. We compared the incidence of dysphagia between patients with unilateral pontine infarction and those with bilateral pontine infarction. To evaluate the functional status of patients, we investigated their initial modified Rankin Scale（mRS） score and initial National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale（NIHSS） score within 1 day of admission. Of 146 patients, 50（34.2%） had dysphagia initially within 1 day after admission. At the second evaluation at the time of discharge, dysphagia was diagnosed in 24 patients（16.4%）. Patients with bilateral pontine infarction were more likely to present with dysphagia. In addition, clinical severity（in terms of mRS and NIHSS scores） was identified as a predictor of dysphagia in patients with cerebral infarction（multiple binary logistic regression analysis, mRS： P = 0.011, NIHSS： P = 0.004）. Dysphagia frequently occurs in patients with isolated pontine infarction. Clinicians should pay particular attention to the occurrence of dysphagia, especially in patients with bilateral pontine infarction or high functional disability.

The arcuate fasciculus is the neural tract connecting the two major speech centers（Broca’s and Wernicke’s areas）and plays a critical role in language function（Catani and Mesulam,2008）.Injury of this tract can lead to several types of language impairment,including conduction aphasia,Broca’s aphasia,anomic aphasia,and apraxia of speech（Anderson et al.,1999;Bartha and Benke,2003;Catani and Mesulam,2008;Bernal and Ardila,2009;Kim et al.,2011）.

Synthesis and characterization of metallic Pd embedded TiO_2 nanoparticles by reverse micelle and sol-gel processing

Metallic Pd clusters were embedded into TiO2 nanoparticles that were synthesized within reverse micelle via a solution reduction of Pd(NO3)2 by hydrazine hydrate. The size of the particles can be controlled by manipulating the relative rates of the hydrolysis and condensation reactions of titanium tetra-isopropoxide within the micro-emulsion. The spherical equivalent size for the Pd clusters formed in TiO2 matrix was estimated to be around (3±1) nm. The presence of Pd in the matrix was demonstrated by EDS spectroscopy. The effects of synthesis parameters, such as the concentration of Pd solution, the molar ratio of water to TIP, and the molar ratio of water to surfactant, were discussed.

Comparative study of extrudability, microstructure, and mechanical properties of AZ80 and BA53 alloys

The extrudability,microstructural characteristics,and tensile properties of the Mg–5Bi–3Al(BA53)alloy are investigated herein by comparing them with those of a commercial Mg–8Al–0.5 Zn(AZ80)*** AZ80 is extruded at 400℃,severe hot cracking occurs at exit speeds of 4.5 m/min or *** contrast,BA53 is successfully extruded without any surface cracking at 400℃ and at high exit speeds of 21–40 m/*** extruded at 3 m/min(AZ80–3)and 40 m/min(BA53–40),both AZ80 and BA53 exhibited completely recrystallized microstructures with abasal ***,BA53–40 has a coarser grain structure owing to grain growth promoted by the high temperature in the deformation ***80–3 contains a continuous network of Mg_(17)Al_(12) particles along the grain boundaries,which form via static precipitation during natural air-cooling after the material exits the extrusion ***53–40 contains coarse Mg_(3)Bi_(2) particles aligned parallel to the extrusion direction along with numerous uniformly distributed fine Mg_(3)Bi_(2) ***80–3 has higher tensile strength than BA53–40 because the relatively finer grains and larger number of solute atoms in AZ80–3 result in stronger grain-boundary and solid-solution hardening effects,*** BA53 is extruded at a high temperature and extrusion speed of 400℃ and 40 m/min,respectively,the extruded material has a high tensile yield strength of 188 *** can be primarily attributed to the large particle hardening effect resulting from the numerous fine Mg_(3)Bi_(2) particles.
