Precipitation-hardened high entropy alloys(HEAs)with carefully tuned compositions have shown excellent mechanical properties,demonstrating great potential for engineering ***,due to the lack of precise multiple phase diagrams,the composition design of multi-principal-component HEAs still inevitably relies on the extremely time-consuming trial-and-error *** present study,on the basis of powerful composition quantification ability of atom probe tomography(APT)technology,proposed a framework to guide the quantitative design of precipitation-hardened *** this framework,the elemental partitioning was used as a crucial route to avoid the thermodynamic challenge of designing precipitation-hardened *** a case study,the role of Ti/Al ratio in the design ofγ-γ’HEAs was predicted through the proposed framework and then validated by experimental *** framework predicted that when the total content of Ti and Al is fixed,a higher Ti/Al ratio makesγ-γ’HEA *** and mechanical results agreed well with these predictions and validated the feasibility of the *** findings provided a new route to design the precipitation-hardened alloys and a deeper insight into the design ofγ-γ’HEA.

Design and characterization of biodegradable Mg-Zn-Ag metallic glasses

In order to develop the Mg-Zn-Ag metallic glasses(MGs)for biodegradable implant applications,the glass formation ability(GFA)and biocompatibility of Mg-Zn-Ag alloys were investigated using a combination of the calculation of phase diagrams(CALPHAD)and experimental *** GFA potentiality of two alloy series,specifically Mg_(96-x)Zn_xAg_(4)and Mg_(94-x)Zn_xAg_6(x=17,20,23,26,29,32,35),was predicted theoretically and then substantiated through experimental testing.X-ray diffraction(XRD)and differential scanning calorimetry(DSC)techniques were used to evaluate the crystallinity,GFA,and crystallization characteristics of these *** results showed that compositions between Mg_(73)Zn_(23)Ag_(4)and Mg_(64)Zn_(32)Ag_(4)for Mg_(96-x)Zn_xAg_4,Mg_(66)Zn_(28)Ag_(6)and Mg_(63)Zn_(31)Ag_(6for)Mg_(94-x)Zn_xAg_(6)displayed a superior ***,the GFA of the Mg_(96-x)Zn_xAg_(4)series was better than that of the Mg_(94-x)Zn_xAg_(6)***,the Mg_(70)Zn_(26)Ag_4,Mg_(74)Zn_(20)Ag_6,and Mg_(71)Zn_(23)Ag_(6)alloys showed acceptable corrosion rates,good cytocompatibility,and positive effects on cell *** characteristics make them suitable for applications in medical settings,potentially materials as biodegradable implants.

Benign esophageal lesions: Endoscopic and pathologic features

Benign esophageal lesions have a wide spectrum of clinical and pathologic features. Understanding the endoscopic and pathologic features of esophageal lesions is essential for their detection, differential diagnosis, and management. The purpose of this review is to provide updated features that may help physicians to appropriately manage these esophageal lesions. The endoscopic features of 2997 patients are reviewed. In epithelial lesions, the frequency of occurrence was in the following order: glycogenic acanthosis, heterotopic gastric mucosa, squamous papilloma, hyperplastic polyp, ectopic sebaceous gland and xanthoma. In subepithelial lesions, the order was as follows: hemangioma, leiomyoma, dysphagia aortica and granular cell tumor. Most benign esophageal lesions can be diagnosed according to their endoscopic appearance and findings on routine biopsy, and submucosal lesions, by endoscopic resection. Management is generally based upon the confidence of diagnosis and whether the lesion causes symptoms. We suggest endoscopic resection of all granular cell tumors and squamous papillomas because, while rare, these lesions have malignant potential. Dysphagia aortica should be considered in the differential diagnosis of dysphagia in the elderly.

Gastric juice acidity in upper gastrointestinal diseases

AIM: To search the independent factors determining gastric juice acidity and to investigate the acidity of gastric juices in various benign and malignant upper gastrointestinal diseases. METHODS: Fasting gastric juice acidity of 165 healthysubjects and 346 patients with esophageal ulcer (n = 21), gastric ulcer (n = 136), duodenal ulcer (n = 100) or gastric cancer (n = 89) were measured and compared. Additionally, gastric specimens were taken from the antrum and body for rapid urease test and histological examination. RESULTS: Multivariate analysis revealed that bile stain of gastric juice, high acute inflammatory score of the corpus, and atrophy of the corpus were independent risk factors for the development of gastric hypoacidity with odds ratios of 3.1 (95% CI: 1.3-7.3), 3.1 (95% CI: 1.2-7.9) and 3.5 (95% CI: 1.3-9.2). Esophageal ulcer and duodenal ulcer patients had a lower pH level (1.9 and 2.1 vs 2.9, both P < 0.05) of gastric juices than healthy subjects. In contrast, gastric ulcer and gastric cancer patients had a higher pH level (3.4 and 6.6 vs 2.9, both P < 0.001) than healthy controls. Hypoacidity existed in 22%, 5%, 29%, 5% and 88% of healthy subjects, esophageal ulcer, gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer and gastric cancer patients, respectively. CONCLUSION: Bile reflux, atrophy and dense neutrophil infiltrate of the corpus are three independent factors determining the acidity of gastric juice.

OPV （Organic photovoltaic） cells represent a compelling candidate for renewable energy by solar energy conversion. In recent years, versatile light-trapping measures via structures have been intensively explored to optimize photovoltaic performance. In this work, a unique rubbing technique is demonstrated to create nanoscale grooves on the PEDOT：PSS [poly（3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene）： poly（styrenesulfonate）] surface and the grating-like features are 500 nm wide and 10 nm deep. The PEDOT：PSS film with grooved surface is used as buffer layers for OPV cell devices based on a P3HT：PCBM bulk heterojunction. The patterned surface has a profound effect on carrier mobility, light trapping, and hole collection efficiency, leading to an increase in the short circuit density, filling factor, and power conversion efficiency. These results indicate the feasibility of the rubbing method can be applicable to high-efficiency OPV cells.

Background:This study examined the joint associations of sleep patterns and physical activity(PA) with all-cause,cardiovascular disease(CVD),and cancer ***:A total of 341,248 adults(mean age=39.7 years;men:48.3%) were included in the study,with a 15-year *** reported sleep duration and disturbances(difficulty falling asleep,easily awakened,or use of sleeping medication).PA was classified into 4 levels:30.0 metabolic equivalent hours per week(MET-h/week).To understand the joint associations of sleep patterns and PA with mortality,Cox proportional hazard models were conducted,with exposure variables combining sleep duration/disturbances and ***:Compared with the reference group(sleeping 6-8 h/day),individuals who slept>8 h/day had higher risk for all-cause mortality(hazard ratio(HR)=1.307,95% confidence interval(95%CI):1.248-1.369),CVD mortality(HR=1.298,95%CI:1.165-1.445),and cancer mortality(HR=1.128,95%CI:1.042-1.220).Short sleep duration was not associated with mortality *** risk of all-cause and CVD mortality was found in participants who had difficulty falling asleep(HR=1.120,95%CI:1.068-1.175;HR=1.163,95%CI:1.038-1.304,respectively),and used sleeping medication(HR=1.261,95%CI:1.159-1.372;HR=1.335,95%CI:1.102-1.618,respectively) compared with those who slept *** sleep duration and sleep disturbances were not associated with risk of all-cause and CVD mortality among individuals achieving a PA level of>15 MET-h/week,and in particular among those achieving> 30 MET-h/***:Long sleep duration,difficulty falling asleep,and use of sleeping medication were related to a higher risk of *** physically active at a moderate intensity for 25-65 min/day eliminated these detrimental associations.

Hybrid vs sequential therapy for eradication of Helicobacter pylori in Taiwan: a prospective randomized trial

AIM: To evaluate the efficacy of sequential vs hybrid therapy in patients with Helicobacter pylori(H. pylori) ***: From March 2013 to May 2014,one hundred and seventy-five H. pylori infected patients who had not been treated for H. pylori before wererandomized to receive either sequential therapy(rabeprazole 20 mg and amoxicillin 1 g twice daily for 5 d,followed by rabeprazole 20 mg,clarithromycin 500 mg and metronidazole 500 mg twice daily for 5 d) or hybrid therapy(rabeprazole 20 mg and amoxicillin 1 g for 7 d,followed by rabeprazole 20 mg,amoxicillin 1 g,clarithromycin 500 mg and metronidazole 500 mg twice daily for 7 d). H. pylori status was confirmed by positive results of both rapid urease test and histology examination or a positive result of culture. Eradication efficacy was assessed by follow-up endoscopy with rapid urease test and histological examination 8 wk after the end of anti-H. pylori therapy,or 13C-urea breath test at least 4 wk after completion of treatment. The primary outcome was H. pylori eradication by intension-to-treat(ITT) and per-protocol(PP) ***: One hundred and sixty-seven patients(83 patients in the sequential group and 84 patients in the hybrid group) completed the study. The compliance rates were 97.6% and 97.7% for the two groups,respectively. The eradication rate was 78.2% for the sequential group and 92% for the hybrid group by ITT analysis(P = 0.01). The eradication rate was 81.9% for the sequential group and 96.4% for the hybrid group by PP analysis(P = 0.01). Univariate analysis for the clinical and bacterial factors did not identify any risk factors associated with treatment failure. Severe adverse events were observed in 2.3% of patients in the sequential group and 2.4% of those in the hybrid ***: Due to a grade A(> 95%) success rate for H. pylori eradication by PP analysis,similar compliance and adverse events,hybrid therapy seems to be an appropriate eradication regimen in Taiwan.

Transcription analysis of peloric mutants of Phalaenopsis orchids derived from tissue culture

Tissue culture has been widely used for mass propagation of Phalaenopsis. However, somaclonal variation occurred during micropropagation process posed a severe problem by affecting product quality. In this study, wild type and peloric flower buds of Phalaenopsis hybrids derived from flower stalk nodal culture were used for cDNA-RAPD and cDNA suppression subtractive hybridization analyses in order to study their genetic difference in terms of expressed sequence tags. A total of 209 ESTs from normal flower buds and 230 from mutants were sequenced. These ESTs sequences can be grouped into several functional categories involved in different cellular processes including metabolism, signal transduction, transcription, cell growth and division, protein synthesis, and protein localization, and into a subcat- egory of proteins with unknown function. Cymbidium mosaic virus transcript was surprisingly found expressed fre- quently in the peloric mutant of P. Little Mary. Real-time RT-PCR analysis on selected ESTs showed that in mutant flower buds, a bZIP transcription factor (TGA1a-like protein) was down-regulated, while up-regulated genes include auxin-regulated protein kinase, cyclophilin, and TCP-like genes. A retroelement clone was also preferentially expressed in the peloric mutant flowers. On the other hand, ESTs involved in DNA methylation, chromatin remodeling and post- transcriptional regulation, such as DNA methyltransferase, histone acetyltransferase, ERECTA, and DEAD/DEAH RNA helicase, were enriched in normal flower buds than the mutants. The enriched transcripts in the wild type indicate the down regulation of these transcripts in the mutants, and vice versa. The potential roles of the analyzed transcripts in the development of Phalaenopsis flowers are discussed.

Delayed diagnosis of pulmonary embolism

Pulmonary embolism is a common and potentially life threatening condition. Delays in pulmonary embolism diagnosis represent an important problem. It is crucial to have early diagnosis of pulmonary embolism if one wishes to reduce its complication. We retrospectively reviewed our patients who visited our emergency department with a final diagnosis of pulmonary embolism. We found that delayed diagnosis of pulmonary embolism usually happened when patients did not present with the classical symptoms and signs leading to other medical diagnosis at first. Clinical signs and symptoms for pulmonary embolism are mostly non-specific;therefore, patients suspected of having pulmonary embolism—because of unexplained chest pain, shortness of breath or tachycardia with or without the risk factors for pulmonary embolism—must undergo diagnostic tests including D-dimer or CT pulmonary angiography if indicated until the diagnosis is ruled out.
