Injectable thermal gels are a useful tool for drug delivery and tissue ***,most thermal gels do not solidify rapidly at body temperature(37C).We addressed this by synthesizing a thermo-sensitive,rapidly biodegrading *** hydrogel,poly(ethylene glycol)-co-poly(propanol serinate hexamethylene urethane)(ePSHU),is an ABA block copolymer comprising A,methoxy poly ethylene glycol group and B,poly(propanol L-serinate hexamethylene urethane).ePSHU was characterized by gel permeation chromatography for molecular weight and 1H NMR and Fourier transformed infrared for *** studies measured the phase transition *** vitro degradation in cholesterol esterase and in Dulbecco’s phosphate buffered saline(DPBS)was tracked using the average molecular weight measured by gel permeation ***/DeAD and resazurin reduction assays performed on NIH 3t3 fibroblasts exposed to ePSHU extracts demonstrated no *** implantation into BALB/cJ mice indicated good biocompatibility in *** biodegradability and biocompatibility of ePSHU together make it a promising candidate for drug delivery applications that demand carrier gel degradation withinmonths.

Jellyfish-inspired alginate composite hydrogel filter prepared by macro-micro double bionic strategy for efficient water purification

Recently,research on hydrogel materials with a porous structure and superior water absorption capabilities significantly ***,the hydrogel under gravity-driven separation conditions often exhibit an unstable pore structure,poor mechanical properties,and limited *** this end,this work presents a novel approach that combines a macro-micro double bionic strategy with a triple crosslinking method to develop a multifunctional alginate composite hydrogel filter(2%-SA-κCG-PVA-Ca^(2+),2%-SKP-Ca^(2+)for short)with a stable pore structure and superior mechanical properties,which possessed an umbrella-shaped structure resembling that of *** 2%-SKPCa^(2+)filter was synthesized using polyvinyl alcohol(PVA)as a stable structure-directing agent,and sodium alginate(SA)andκ-carrageenan(κ-CG)as polymer *** distinctive umbrellashaped hydrogel of 2%-SKP-Ca^(2+)filter,formed through the triple crosslinking method,overcomes the limitations of unstable pore structure and poor durability seen in hydrogels prepared by traditional crosslinking ***,the utilization of the 2%-SKP-Ca^(2+)filter in water treatment demonstrates its good selective permeability,excellent resistance to fouling,and extended longevity,which enables it to simultaneously achieve the multifunctional water purification and the coating of multi-substrate anti-fouling ***,not only does this research provide an efficient,multifunctional,highly pollution-resistant preparation method for designing a new filter,but it also confirms the application prospect of the macro-micro dual bionic strategy developed in this study in complex water treatment.

Purpose:to describe the development of a Compendium for estimating the energy costs of activities in adults>60 years(OA Compendium).Methods:Physical activities(PAs)and their metabolic equivalent of task(Met)values were obtained from a systematic search of studies published in 4 sport and exercise databases(PubMed,embase,SPORtDiscus(eBSCOhost),and Scopus)and a review of articles included in the 2011 Adult Compendium that measured PA in older *** values were computed as the oxygen cost(VO_(2),mL/kg/min)during PA divided by 2.7 m L/kg/min(Met_(60+))to account for the lower resting metabolic rate in older ***:We identified 68 articles and extracted energy expenditure data on 427 *** these,we derived 99 unique Specific Activity codes with corresponding Met_(60+)values for older *** developed a website to present the OA Compendium Met_(60+)values:https://***:the OA Compendium uses data collected from adults>60 years for more accurate estimation of the energy cost of PAs in older *** is an accessible resource that will allow researchers,educators,and practitioners to find Met_(60+)values for older adults for use in PA research and practice.

Homeward bound:canopy cover and species identity influence non-breeding season homing success and speed in forest birds

Background:efficient and safe movement is fundamental for wild birds to thrive in their *** arboreal forest animals,especially birds,canopy cover has a large impact on birds’daily movements and is a crucial component of conservation strategies seeking to retain avian population in disturbed or urban ***:We translocated woodland bird species utilizing different forest strata during two non-breeding seasons in Gainesville,FL,*** used linear model and generalized linear model to examine the effects of canopy cover and species identity on homing success and ***:Among our study species of tufted titmouse(Baeolophus bicolor),Carolina Chickadee(Poecile carolinensis),and Northern Cardinal(Cardinalis cardinalis),we found that Carolina Chickadees and tufted titmice were more likely to return than Northern *** birds that successfully returned,homing speed is significantly affected by forest canopy cover and species identity(titmice had higher homing speed than cardinals).Birds return much faster in landscape with higher canopy ***:this study presented evidence of species identity’s effect on homing success and speed in common feeder bird species in Southeast US and provided further evidence that bird movements in the suburban land cover are constrained by low canopy cover.

Disinfection byproduct regulatory compliance surrogates and bromide-associated risk

Natural and anthropogenic factors can alter bromide concentrations in drinking water sources. Increasing source water bromide concentrations increases the formation and alters the speciation of disinfection byproducts（DBPs） formed during drinking water *** DBPs are more toxic than their chlorinated analogs, and thus have a greater impact on human health. However, DBPs are regulated based on the mass sum of DBPs within a given class（e.g., trihalomethanes and haloacetic acids）, not based on species-specific risk or extent of bromine incorporation. the regulated surrogate measures are intended to protect against not only the species they directly represent, but also against unregulated DBPs that are not routinely measured. Surrogates that do not incorporate effects of increasing bromide may not adequately capture human health risk associated with drinking water when source water bromide is elevated. the present study analyzes trihalomethanes（tHMs）, measured as ttHM,with varying source water bromide concentrations, and assesses its correlation with brominated tHM, ttHM risk and species-specific tHM concentrations and associated *** potential surrogates are evaluated to assess their ability to capture tHM risk under different source water bromide concentration conditions. the results of the present study indicate that ttHM does not adequately capture risk of the regulated species when source water bromide concentrations are elevated, and thus would also likely be an inadequate surrogate for many unregulated brominated species. Alternative surrogate measures,including tHM3 and the bromodichloromethane concentration, are more robust surrogates for species-specific tHM risk at varying source water bromide concentrations.

Virus-induced gene silencing （VIGS） has been shown to be effective for transient knockdown of gene expression in plants to analyze the effects of specific genes in development and stress-related responses. VlGS is well established for studies of model systems and crops within the Solanaceae, Brassicaceae, Leguminaceae, and Poaceae, but only recently has been applied to plants residing outside these families. Here, we have demonstrated that barley stripe mosaic virus （BSMV） can infect two species within the Zingiberaceae, and that BSMV-VIGS can be applied to specifically down-regulate phytoene desaturase in the culinary ginger Zingiber officinale. these results suggest that extension of BSMV-VlGS to monocots other than cereals has the potential for directed genetic analyses of many important temperate and tropical crop species.

Gabapentin prevalence:clinical and forensic experience in ***,Missouri,USA

Gabapentin(Neurontin)is an anti-epileptic drug that has had wide off-label prescription use since market release due to presumed negligible abuse ***,trends in drug misuse have demonstrated that gabapentin misuse is occurring,particularly in those with a history of opioid *** is concerning,because although gabapentin has no direct ligand activity at opioid receptors,it does potentiate the analgesic effect of opioids,and concurrent use of gabapentin and opioids may increase the risk of respiratory depressive effects of *** study investigates the incidence of gabapentin detected in urine samples collected for clinical drug screening purposes in a local hospital emergency department and in postmortem samples submitted by medical examiners in the *** metropolitan *** prevalence of gabapentin and co-detected drugs in both populations is contrasted,compared,and *** study found that 30%of urine samples collected from patients with suspected drug intoxication presenting to SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital,a quaternary care medical center,were positive for gabapentin,and nearly two thirds of those were also positive for *** a 6-month period,the incidence of gabapentin positive postmortem cases increased from 18%to 20%.Nearly all gabapentin positive postmortem cases were also positive for an opioid,the most significant being fentanyl,suggesting that gabapentin misuse may be due to its potentiating effect of opioid drug *** study also highlights the limited utility of immunoassay-based urine drug screens.

Objectives:Genomic signatures like k-mers have become one of the most prominent approaches to describe genomic *** a result,myriad real-world applications,such as the construction of de Bruijn graphs in genome assembly,have been benefited by recognizing genomic *** other words,an efficient approachof genomic signatureprofiling is an essential need for tackling high-throughput sequencing ***,most of the existing approaches only recognize fixed-size k-merswhile many research studies have shown the importance of considering variable-length ***:In this paper,we present a novel genomic signature profiling approach,tahcoRoll,by extending the Aho–Corasick algorithm(AC)for the task of profiling variable-length *** first group nucleotides into two clusters and represent each cluster with a *** rolling hash technique is further utilized to encode signatures and read patterns for efficient ***:In extensive experiments,tahcoRoll significantly outperforms the most state-of-the-art k-mer counters and has the capability of processing reads across different sequencing platforms on a budget desktop ***:the single-thread version of tahcoRoll is as efficient as the eight-thread version of the state-of-the-art,JellyFish,while the eight-thread tahcoRoll outperforms the eight-thread JellyFish by at least four times.
