Subdural fluid collection rather than meningitis contributes to hydrocephalus after cervical laminoplasty:A case report

BACKGROUND Hydrocephalus following dural tear after spinal surgery is *** a few cases of obstructive hydrocephalus caused by subdural fluid collection and communicating hydrocephalus associated with meningitis have been reported,the mechanism remains *** we describe a patient complicated with hydrocephalus after cervical laminoplasty in whom subdural fluid collection in the cervical spine and posterior cranial fossa rather than chronic meningitis was the main *** SUMMARY A 45-year-old man underwent cervical laminoplasty for cervical spondylotic myelopathy at a local *** days postoperatively,a high fever occurred and magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)showed cerebrospinal fluid(CSF)*** liquid test showed high levels of protein and white blood cell(WBC)count with negative bacterial *** patient was treated with shortterm intravenous antibiotic and discharged with normal body *** patient was uneventful during the first 8 mo follow-up although repeated MRI showed persistent *** the 9th mo postoperatively,the patient gradually presented with dizziness and headache accompanied by recurrent weakness of his left *** examinations demonstrated hydrocephalus and a cystic lesion around the cervical spinal *** test from lumbar puncture indicated chronic *** on 1 d after pseudomeningocele drainage showed a significant decrease in the cystic volume,suggesting that the cystic lesion would be subdural fluid collection rather than adhesive *** dural defect repair,the patient’s symptoms completely resolved and hydrocephalus gradually *** analysis at the 21-mo follow-up revealed significantly decreased protein level and WBC *** Subdural fluid collection rather than meningitis contributes to the hydrocephalus formation after cervical laminoplasty.

Traditional Chinese medicine for treatment of liver diseases: progress, challenges and opportunities

Traditional Chinese medicine （TCM） is commonly used in treating liver diseases worldwide, especially in China. The advantages of using TCM for treatment of liver diseases include： protecting hepatocytes, inhibiting hepatic inflammation and antifibrosis in the liver. In this article, we introduce TCM herbal preparations from the Chinese materia medica （such as Fuzheng Huayu） that are typically used for the treatment of liver diseases. Literature surrounding the mechanisms of TCM therapy for treatment of liver diseases is presented and discussed. We propose that side effects of herbal compounds are often under-appreciated, and that more care should be taken in the prescription of potentially hepatotoxic medicines. Further, to deepen the understanding of TCM mechanisms, new techniques and methodologies must be developed. Future studies will lead to the enhancement of clinical outcomes of TCM. As complementary and alternative therapies, TCMs will play an expanding role in the future of liver disease treatment.

T helper 2 （Th2） polarization is a major pathological feature in allergic diseases; its etiology is not fully understood. This study aims to elucidate the adjuvant effect of the microbial product-derived small peptides in the initiation of antigen-specific Th2 polarization. In this study, a clinical survey of patients with chronic rhinosinusitis （CRS） and food allergy （FA） was carried out. The Staphylococcal enterotoxin B （SEB）-derived small peptides （Ssps） were examined in the human stool extracts. The formation of Ssp/antigen adducts was tested in a protein-protein combination assay. The bone marrow-derived dendritic cells （BMDCs） were employed to test the role of Ssp/ovalbumin （OVA） adducts in the dendritic cell （DC） maturation. A mouse model was developed to test the role of Ssp/OVA adducts in the initiation of ＂l＇h2 polarization in the intestine. The results showed that 54 （18.2%} patients with FA were diagnosed among 296 patients with SEB＋ CRS; only eight （2.9%） FA patients were identified among 272 patients with SEB- CRS. Ssps were detected in the stool protein extracts from FA patients with SEB＋ CRS, but not in those with SEB- CRS. Ssp/OVA adducts induced DC maturation, speeded up DC migration, activated CD4＋ T cells in the regional lymph nodes and induced skewed Th2 polarization in the local tissue. We conclude that patients with SEB ＋ CRS are prone to suffering from FA. SEB can be degraded to Ssps in the gastrointestinal tract. The Ssps can bind macromolecular antigens to form adducts to promote the antigenicity of the antigens and induction of the antigen-specific Th2 polarization and inflammation in the local tissue.

Improvement for creep strength of a second-generation single crystal superalloy by design of heat treatments

Design of heat treatments is related to the key technology for development of nickel-based single crystal superalloys(Ni-SXs). Based on the full understanding of the solidification characteristics, this work applies optimization design of heat treatments for a second-generation Ni-SX. Microstructure evolution and creep properties are compared in the material under conventional/standard(Std.) and optimized(Opt.) treatments. For the Std. sample,strong dendritic segregations determine inconsistent microstructure evolution in the dendritic(D) and interdendritic region(ID), while the latter serves as weak area to have the prior microcrack initiation, damaging overall performance of the alloy. The Opt. treatment applies higher homogenization temperature, leading to overall reduced segregations, while not inducing incipient melting. A lower temperature of first-step ageing is used to lower the size ofγ'particles. These help to form the more uniform microstructure in dendritic and interdendritic region and relieve the inconsistent microstructure evolution. The balanced local strength makes ID no longer as the weak area,thus restricting microcrack initiation. Great improvement of high temperature and low stress property is obtained by this progress, leading to the pronounced increase of creep rupture life under 1100 °C/140 MPa.

Generic Modeling and Control Framework for Power Systems Dominated by Power Converters Connected Through a Passive Transmission and Distribution Grid

In this paper,a compact mathematical model having an elegant structure,together with a generic control framework,are proposed for generic power systems dominated by power converters that are interconnected through a passive transmission and distribution(T&D)grid,by adopting the port-Hamiltonian(pH)systems theory and the fundamental circuit *** models of generic T&D lines are developed and then the model of a generic T&D grid is *** the proposed control framework,the controlled converters are proven to be passive and Input-to-State Stable(ISS).The compact mathematical model is scalable and can be applied to power systems with multiple power electronic converters with generic passive controllers,passive local loads,and different types of passive T&D lines connected in a meshed configuration without self-loops,so it is very ***,the resulting power system is proven to be ISS as *** analysis is carried out without assumptions on constant frequency/voltage,constant loads,and/or lossless networks,except the need of passivity for all parts involved,and without using the Clarke/Park transformations or the graph *** simplify the presentation,three-phase balanced systems are adopted but the results can be easily adapted for single-phase or unbalanced three-phase systems.

As an important mechanism in multi-agent interaction,communication can make agents form complex team relationships rather than constitute a simple set of multiple independent ***,the existing communication schemes can bring much timing redundancy and irrelevant messages,which seriously affects their practical *** solve this problem,this paper proposes a targeted multiagent communication algorithm based on state control(SCTC).The SCTC uses a gating mechanism based on state control to reduce the timing redundancy of communication between agents and determines the interaction relationship between agents and the importance weight of a communication message through a series connection of hard-and self-attention mechanisms,realizing targeted communication message *** addition,by minimizing the difference between the fusion message generated from a real communication message of each agent and a fusion message generated from the buffered message,the correctness of the final action choice of the agent is *** evaluation using a challenging set of Star Craft II benchmarks indicates that the SCTC can significantly improve the learning performance and reduce the communication overhead between agents,thus ensuring better cooperation between agents.

Objective:This cross-sectional study aimed to determine the epidemiology of olfactory and gustatory dysfunctions related to COVID-19 in ***:This study was conducted by 45 tertiary Grade-A hospitals in *** and offline questionnaire data were obtained from patients infected with COVID-19 between December 28,2022,and February 21,*** collected information included basic demographics,medical history,smoking and drinking history,vaccination history,changes in olfactory and gustatory functions before and after infection,and other postinfection symptoms,as well as the duration and improvement status of olfactory and gustatory ***:Complete questionnaires were obtained from 35,566 *** overall incidence of olfactory and taste dysfunction was 67.75%.Being female or being a cigarette smoker increased the likelihood of developing olfactory and taste *** received four doses of the vaccine or having good oral health or being a alcohol drinker decreased the risk of such *** infection,the average olfactory and taste VAS scores were 8.41 and 8.51,respectively;after infection,they decreased to 3.69 and 4.29 and recovered to 5.83 and 6.55 by the time of the *** median duration of dysosmia and dysgeusia was 15 and 12 days,respectively,with 0.5%of patients having symptoms lasting for more than 28 *** overall self-reported improvement rate was 59.16%.Recovery was higher in males,never smokers,those who received two or three vaccine doses,and those that had never experienced dental health issues,or chronic accompanying ***:The incidence of dysosmia and dysgeusia following infection with the SARS-CoV-2 virus is high in *** and prognosis are influenced by several factors,including sex,SARS-CoV-2 vaccination,history of head-facial trauma,nasal and oral health status,smoking and drinking history,and the persistence of accompanying symptoms.

Properties of collective flow and pion production in intermediate-energy heavy-ion collisions with a relativistic quantum molecular dynamics model

The relativistic mean-field approach was implemented in the Lanzhou quantum molecular dynamics transport model(***). Using the ***, the properties of collective flow and pion production were investigated systematically for nuclear reactions with various isospin asymmetries. The directed and elliptic flows of the *** are able to describe the experimental data of STAR Collaboration. The directed flow difference between free neutrons and protons was associated with the stiffness of the symmetry energy, that is, a softer symmetry energy led to a larger flow difference. For various collision energies, the ratio between the π^(-) and π^(+) yields increased with a decrease in the slope parameter of the symmetry energy. When the collision energy was 270 MeV/nucleon, the single ratio of the pion transverse momentum spectra also increased with decreasing slope parameter of the symmetry energy in both nearly symmetric and neutron-rich ***, it is difficult to constrain the stiffness of the symmetry energy with the double ratio because of the lack of threshold energy correction on the pion production.
