Lignocellulosic Micro and Nanofibrillated Cellulose Produced by Steam Explosion for Wood Adhesive Formulations

The reinforcing impact of Lignocellulosic micro and nanofibrillated cellulose(L-MNFCs)obtained from Eucalyp-tus Globulus bark in Urea-Formaldehyde UF adhesive was tested.L-MNFCs were prepared by an environmentally friendly,low-cost process using a combination process involving steam explosion followed by refining and ultra-fine grinding.Obtained L-MNFCs showed a web-like morphology with some aggregates and lignin nanodroplets.They present a mixture of residual fibers and fine elements with a width varying between 5 nm to 20μm,respec-tively.The effects of the addition of low amounts of L-MNFCs(1%wt.)on the properties of three different adhe-sives(Urea-Formaldehyde UF,Phenol-Formaldehyde PF,and Tannin-Hexamine TH)were studied by the evolution of the pH,the viscosity,and the mechanical properties.Results showed that the viscosity of PF and UF adhesives increased with the addition of L-MNFCs,unlike TH.Meanwhile,the addition led to better mechan-ical behavior for the three adhesives.Particleboards were then prepared using modified UF with L-MNFCs and tested.Results showed that an amount of 1%wt.of L-MNFCs was sufficient to increase the internal bonding by≈67%,the modulus of elasticity by≈43%,and the modulus of rupture by≈29%.

This comment will review and discuss recent results obtained with the use of calorimetry in assessing molecular information from complex phenomena such as association in surfactant/polymer mixtures.These examples were selected to support the view that it is possible to ally the great sensitivity of modern calorimeters with carefully planned experiments and,sometimes,ancillary techniques in order to derive detailed information on molecular interactions.

白洋淀流域位于雄安新区上游,山区植被和下垫面变化、平原区农业灌溉加大了区域蒸散发,造成山区产流减少和平原区地下水超采。研究区域蒸散发(ET)时空格局的演变趋势、甄别植被、作物种植结构、城市化等对蒸散发变化的影响,对深入揭示白洋淀流域水资源枯竭的成因,建设绿色雄安“未来之城”具有重要意义。本研究基于500 m空间分辨率的PML_V2遥感蒸散产品,从像元尺度分析了2002—2018年研究区ET的变化趋势和显著性,揭示植被变化、冬小麦压采、城市化等对山区和平原区ET的影响。结果表明, 1)研究时段内白洋淀流域ET和植被总初级生产力(GPP)及归一化植被指数(NDVI)均呈增加趋势,平均增长量为2.4 mm·a^(-1)、9.8 g·cm^(-2)·a^(-1)和0.0021·a^(-1)。2)降雨和植被恢复带来的GPP、NDVI增长是山区ET增加的主要因素, ET与GPP和NDVI的趋势变化在空间分布上具有很好的相似性,研究时段内山区ET增加56.5 mm。3)平原区ET受快速城市化、小麦种植面积压减和农田ET增加3个因素影响,虽然城市化和小麦压减都带来蒸散发减少,但仍无法抵消农田ET增加的效果,平原区ET总体增长了6.4 mm。就整个流域而言,减少山区植被和灌溉农田带来的ET增加对维持区域水资源可持续利用和绿色发展至关重要。

Background:Tuberculosis is a disease of great relevance since it is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide.Gastrointestinal tuberculosis is an unusual presentation.It is defined as the involvement of any segment of the digestive tract,associated viscera,and peritoneum.The study’s main objective is to collect information from autopsies of patients diagnosed with gastrointestinal tuberculosis in a Pathology reference center in Colombia.Methods:This is a retrospective and descriptive study of autopsy reports.A total of 4,500 autopsies were performed between January 2004 and December 2020.The inclusion criteria were authorization of a family member following local law regulations and a final autopsy diagnosis of gastrointestinal tuberculosis using microscopic visualization.Results:Forty-eight patients with gastrointestinal tuberculosis autopsies were included in our study.Most of the patients were male(n=35,72.9%)with a median age of 40.5 years old.Human immunodeficiency virus infection history was reported in 28 cases(58.33%).The most affected gastrointestinal tract site was the terminal ileum.Ulcers and thickened epithelium were common autopsies macroscopic findings.Tuberculosis multiorgan compromise was a relevant finding in patients with gastrointestinal tuberculosis.Conclusions:Gastrointestinal tuberculosis is a disease of great importance,being its diagnosis a clinical challenge.Underdiagnosis can be reported in a high percentage of cases,so autopsy diagnosis can help reveal more accurate data about this condition.

Translational lab-to-clinic hurdles in stem cell therapy

Several experimental therapeutics have been demonstrated to be safe and effective in animal models of neurological disorders, but have failed when they reached the clinic. Postulated factors that affected the poor clinical outcomes include the lack of proper treatment controls and clinically relevant animal models. This failure of lab-to-clinic translation has plagued many neuroprotective drugs for stroke. With this in mind, the stem cell therapy field has cautiously approached translating stem cell products for clinical application, in that a negative clinical trial may hinder the entire regenerative medicine therapeutics. Here, we discuss the many translational challenges associated with stem cell therapy in the setting of stroke.

BACKGROUND Endoscopic resection of non-invasive lesions is now the standard of care for lesions in the GI tract.However,resection techniques require extensive training,are not available in all endoscopy centers and are prone to complications.Endoscopic mucosal ablation(EMA)is a combination of resection and ablation techniques and it may offer an alternative in the management of such lesions.CASE SUMMARY In this case series we report the successful treatment of three flat colonic polyps using the EMA technique.Two lesions were treatment naïve and 1 was a recurrence after an endoscopic mucosal resection.The sizes ranged from 2 to 4 cm.All three polyps were ablated successfully with no immediate or delayed complications.The recurrence rate at 1 year of follow up was 0%.CONCLUSION Based on this initial experience,we conclude that EMA is a safe and effective technique for the treatment of non-invasive colonic polyps when endoscopic resection techniques are not available.

The Andean puma （Puma concolor） has not been widely studied, particularly in reference to its semen characteristics. The aim of the present study was to define the morphometry of puma sperm heads and classify their subpopulations by cluster analysis. Samples were recovered postmortem from two epididymides from one animal and prepared for morphological observation after staining with the Hemacolor kit. Morphometric data were obtained from 581 spermatozoa using a CASA-Morph system, rendering 13 morphometric parameters. The principal component （PC） analysis was performed followed by cluster analysis for the establishment of subpopulations. Two PC components were obtained, the first related to size and the second to shape. Three subpopulations were observed, corresponding to elongated and intermediate-size sperm heads and acrosomes, to large heads with large acrosomes, and to small heads with short acrosomes. In conclusion, puma spermatozoa showed no uniform sperm morphology but three clear subpopulations. These results should be used for future work in the establishment of an adequate germplasm bank of this species.

Acute and chronic hepatobiliary manifestations of sickle cell disease: A review

Sickle cell disease(SCD) is a common hemoglobinopathy which can affect multiple organ systems in the body. Within the digestive tract, the hepatobiliary system is most commonly affected in SCD. The manifestations range from benign hyperbilirubinemia to overt liver failure, with the spectrum of acute clinical presentations often referred to as "sickle cell hepatopathy". This is an umbrella term referring to liver dysfunction and hyperbilirubinemia due to intrahepatic sickling process during SCD crisis leading to ischemia, sequestration and cholestasis. In this review, we detail the pathophysiology, clinical presentation and biochemical features of various acute and chronic hepatobiliary manifestations of SCD and present and evaluate existing evidence with regards to management of this disease process. We also discuss recent advances and controversies such as the role of liver transplantation in sickle cell hepatopathy and highlight important questions in this field which would require further research. Our aim with this review is to help increase the understanding, aid in early diagnosis and improve management of this important disease process.
