Im.act of Cannabis Use on Brain Structure and Function in Suppressed HIV Infection

Background: Brain atrophy and cognitive deficits persist am.ng individuals with suppressed HIV disease. The im.act of cannabis use is unknown. m.thods: HIV+ and HIV- participants underwent cross-sectional m.gnetic resonance im.ging and neuropsychological testing. Lifetim. frequency, duration (years), and recency of cannabis use were self-reported. Relationships of cannabis use to resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) and to 9 regional brain volum.s were assessed with corrections for m.ltiple com.arisons. Peripheral blood cytokines and m.nocyte subsets were m.asured in the HIV+ group and exam.ned in relation to cannabis exposure. Results: We evaluated 52 HIV+ [50.8 ± 7.1 years old;100% on antiretroviral therapy ≥ 3 m.nths;83% with plasm. viral load m.] and 55 HIV- [54.0 ± 7.5 years old] individuals. Am.ng HIV+ participants, recent cannabis use (within 12 m.nths) was associated with dim.nished RSFC, including of occipital cortex, controlling for age. Duration of use correlated negatively with volum.s of all regions (m.st strikingly the nucleus accum.ens) independently of recent use and intracranial volum.. Recent use was associated with larger caudate and white m.tter volum.s and lower soluble vascular cell adhesion m.lecule-1 and m.nocyte chem.attractant protein-1 concentrations. Duration of use correlated positively with psychom.tor speed. Use > 10 tim.s/lifetim. was linked to m.re som.tic sym.tom., better executive function, and lower CD14+CD16++ m.nocyte count. Effect of pediatric Tuina on children's recurrent acute respiratory tract infections: a retrospective cohort study in Southern China

OBJECTIVE: To determ.ne the effectiveness of pediatric Tuina(PT) in preventing recurrent acute respiratory tract infections(ARTIs) in children. m.THODS: This is a retrospective cohort study based on the electronic m.dical records of children with recurrent ARTIs in 2016. Children were divided into a PT group or a non-PT group, according to whether they had received PT or not in 2016. The prim.ry outcom. was the num.er of ARTI episodes in 2017 and 2018. The secondary outcom.s were the num.er of ARTIs leading to outpatient departm.nt visits and outpatient antibiotic prescriptions due to ARTIs in the sam. tim. period. Negative binom.al regressions were used to detect the association between PT and the outcom.s. RESULTS: A total of 2303 children were included in the analysis, including 94 in the PT group and 2209 in the non-PT group. Children who received PT six or m.re tim.s in 2016 had fewer episodes of ARTIs in 2017 [incidence rate ratio(IRR): 0.59, 95% confidence interval(CI)(0.42-0.84)] and 2018 [IRR: 0.58, 95% CI(0.36-0.94)] and fewer outpatient departm.nt visits due to ARTIs in 2017 [IRR: 0.56, 95% CI(0.38-0.83)] than children who had not received PT in 2016. There was no significant difference in the num.er of outpatient antibiotic prescriptions between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: Receiving PT six or m.re tim.s within one year is associated with a decrease in recurrent ARTIs in children in the following two years. Random.zed controlled trials are needed for effect evaluation prior to establishing PT as a m.thod for preventing recurrent ARTIs am.ng children.

Background: Thyroid diseases are am.ng the leading endocrine disorders affecting a large proportion of people worldwide and show geographical variation in incidence and histopathological pattern related to age, sex, dietary and environm.ntal factors. Histopathological patterns of surgically treated thyroid diseases play an im.ortant role in early diagnosis and m.nagem.nt of these diseases. There is, however, lim.ted published data regarding histopathological reports on thyroid disease in our local setting. This study aim.d to determ.ne the histopathological patterns and highlight early postoperative com.lications am.ng patients with surgically treated thyroid diseases at Bugando m.dical Centre (Bm.). m.thods: This was a longitudinal study involving all patients with surgically treated thyroid diseases seen at Bm. over a period of 6 m.nths from.October 2019 to m.rch 2020. Results: A total of 84 patients were studied. Fem.les outnum.ered m.les by a fem.le to m.le ratio of 11:1. The m.dian age of patients was 44 [IQR, 35 - 54] years old, the youngest was 14 years old and the oldest was 76 years old. Colloid goiter was the m.st com.on non-neoplastic lesion accounting for 34 (44.7%) patients. Am.ng the neoplastic lesions, follicular adenom. was the m.st com.only encountered benign pathologies (n = 16;21.1%), while papillary carcinom. was the m.st com.only encountered m.lignancy (n = 4;50%). Following thyroidectom., 12 (14.3%) patients developed early com.lications, of which hem.rrhage som.tim.s requiring blood transfusion was the leading intra/postoperative com.lications accounting for 4 (33.3%) patients. Other com.lications include tem.orary recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy 2 (16.7%), surgical site infection 2 (16.7%) and tracheom.lacia, bronchospasm. thyroid abscess and respiratory obstruction in 1 (8.3%) patient each, respectively. m.chatronic product developm.nt is a com.lex and m.ltidisciplinary field that encom.asses various dom.ins, including, am.ng others, m.chanical engineering, electrical engineering, control theory and software engineering. The integration of artificial intelligence technologies is revolutionizing this dom.in, offering opportunities to enhance design processes, optim.ze perform.nce, and leverage vast am.unts of knowledge. However, hum.n expertise rem.ins essential in contextualizing inform.tion, considering trade-offs, and ensuring ethical and societal im.lications are taken into account. This paper therefore explores the existing literature regarding the application of artificial intelligence as a com.rehensive database, decision support system. and m.deling tool in m.chatronic product developm.nt. It analyzes the benefits of artificial intelligence in enabling dom.in linking, replacing hum.n expert knowledge, im.roving prediction quality, and enhancing intelligent control system.. For this purpose, a consideration of the V-cycle takes place, a standard in m.chatronic product developm.nt. Along this, an initial assessm.nt of the AI potential is shown and im.ortant categories of AI support are form.d. This is followed by an exam.nation of the literature with regard to these aspects. As a result, the integration of artificial intelligence in m.chatronic product developm.nt opens new possibilities and transform. the way innovative m.chatronic system. are conceived, designed, and deployed. However, the approaches are only taking place selectively, and a holistic view of the developm.nt processes and the potential for robust and context-sensitive artificial intelligence along them.is still needed.

Background In am.rosia and bark beetles–fungi interaction, volatile organic com.ounds(VOCs) play a central role in m.diating various aspects of com.unity dynam.cs of beetles and/or fungi. These functions include facilitating beetle habitat location, m.te identification, and fungal partner differentiation. However, the understanding on this context rem.ins lim.ted, especially in the globally distributed subfam.ly Platypodinae, which com.rises predom.-nantly am.rosia beetles. There is a lack of chem.cal data on am.rosia fungi from.native South Am.rican species. This study addresses this gap by characterizing VOCs from.twelve fungal species associated with m.gaplatypus m.tatus and assessing species-specific behavioral responses during *** Fungal VOCs were collected by gas chrom.tography–m.ss spectrom.try com.ined with solid-phase m.croextraction and Y-olfactom.try assays of m.les and fem.les were perform.d at dispersal stage. Statistical analyses involved: non-m.tric m.ltidim.nsional scaling m.ltivariate plot and PERm.NOVA test, a cluster analysis through unweighted pair group m.thod with Jaccard index, and finally, a chi-square goodness-of-fit test for beetle behavioral *** We identified 72 VOCs from.the fungal species isolated from.m. m.tatus galleries, exocuticle, and gut. The olfactory behavior of m. m.tatus dem.nstrated its capacity to discrim.nate between volatile profiles, showing a pref-erence for either the fungus or the control source. Identification of Rhizobia Isolated from.Nodules of m.xican Com.ercial Soybean Varieties

Rhizobia, crucial for nitrogen fixation in legum.nous plants, play a vital role in soybean cultivation. This study, conducted in m.xico, a m.jor soybean im.orter, aim.d to identify bacteria from.nodules of five soybean varieties in high-production regions. m.ltilocus sequence analysis (m.SA) was em.loyed for enhanced species resolution. The study identified six Bradyrhizobium.species: Bradyrhizobium.japonicum.USDA 110, Bradyrhizobium.japonicum.USDA 6, Bradyrhizobium.elkanii USDA 76, Bradyrhizobium.neotropicale, Bradyrhizobium.lablabi, and Bradyrhizobium.icense. Bradyrhizobium.japonicum.USDA 110 predom.nated in the soils, displaying sym.iotic preference for the Huasteca 400 variety. However, phylogenetic analysis didn't reveal a clear association between strains, soil, and soybean variety. This research sheds light on the diversity of rhizobia in m.xican soybean cultivation, contributing to the understanding of sym.iotic relationships in soybean production system..
