contact models that simulate rotational resistance at particle contacts have been proposed as a means to capture the effect of shape in DEM simulations. This contribution critically explores some key issues related to the implementation of rotational resistance models; these include the need for physically meaningful model parameters, the impact of the model on the overall numerical stability/critical time increment for the DEM model, model validation, and the assessment of model performance relative to real physical materials. The discussion is centred around a rotational resistance model that captures the resistance provided by interlocking asperities on the particle surface. An expression for the maximum permissible integration time step to ensure numerical stability is derived for DEM simulations when rotational resistance is incorporated. Analytical solutions for some single-contact scenarios are derived for model validation. The ability of this type of model to provide additional fundamental insight into granular material behaviour is demonstrated using particle-scale analysis of triaxial compression simulations to examine the roles that contact rollin~ and slidin~ have on the stability of stron：~ force chains.

Recent research shows that the addition of chitosan microspheres (cMs) to poly(l-lactide) (PllA) can result in a composite scaffold material with improved biocompatibility and mechanical properties for tissue engineering applications. However, research regarding the influence of cMs on scaffold degradation is absent in the literature. This paper presents a study on the in vitro degradation of scaffolds made from PllA with cMs. In this study, the PllA/cMs scaffolds with a 25% ratio of cMs to PllA were immersed in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) solution at 37°c for 8 weeks. The in vitro degradation of the scaffolds was investigated using microcomputed tomography (μcT), weight loss analysis, Raman spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSc). Microstructure changes during degradation were monitored using μcT. The μcT results were consistent with the results obtained from Raman spectra and DSc analysis, which reflected that adding cMs into PllA can decrease the degradation rate compared with pure PllA scaffolds. The results suggest that PllA/cMs scaffold degradation can be regulated and controlled to meet requirements imposed a given tissue engineering application.

A finite element analysis of stress intensity factors （KI） in clamped SE（T）c specimens （dog bone profile） is presented. A J-integral approach is used to calculate the values of stress intensity factors valid for 0.125≤a/W≤0.625. A detailed comparison is made with the work of other researchers on rectangular specimens. Different boundary conditions are explored to best describe the real conditions in the laboratory. A sensitivity study is also presented to explore the effects of variation in specimen position in the grips of the testing machine. Finally the numerically calculated SIF is used to determine an FcGR curve for AISI Hll tool steel on SE（T）c specimens and compared with c（T） specimen of the same material.

Objectives: 1) To demonstrate that education outreach in public schools by students in pharmacy education programs is effective at increasing knowledge of important health topics;2) To assess subject attitude towards pharmacy careers after education outreach. Study: A lecture was constructed providing participants with information about careers in pharmacy, diabetes, and information about health literacy. A multiple choice paper-based quiz covering the presented content both preceded and followed each delivery of the lecture. Increases in post-lecture scores of content-knowledge questions were seen in 10 of 11 questions, which indicated an overall increased knowledge from baseline. An additional question, which gauged student interest in pharmacy careers, showed a 10% increase in those who indicated they considered pharmacy as a career. conclusions: The lectures, delivered by a student pharmacist, were effective in increasing awareness and knowledge of pharmacy as a career, diabetes as an important health issue, and health literacy as a problem pharmacists and other healthcare providers encounter on a daily basis.
