Success rates and predictors of outcomes of type I tympanoplasty performed by residents in a teaching tertiary hospital

Several technical variations of tympanoplasty have been reported,usually involving the type of graft and/or instruments *** studies have focused on the outcome of type-1 tympanoplasty specifically in teaching *** aimed to describe the results of type-1 tympanoplasty performed by residents,and to investigate potential predictive factors of surgical *** do so,we did a retrospective analysis of medical records of patients who underwent type-1 tympanoplasty in a tertiary university *** evaluated the tympanic membrane closure and audiometric outcomes during the first year of follow-up,and compared the results according to some clinical and surgical factors.130 operated ears were included in the *** closure rate reached 84.12%after one month and 72.72%after twelve months of *** mean air-bone gap was 22.98 dB preoperatively,and reached 10.55 dB after *** closure rates were 85%and 57.14%for those operated by endoscopic and microscopic-assisted approaches,respectively(p?0.004).The use of cartilage grafts and time without otorrhea of more than three months prior to surgery were also predictors of surgical success(p?0.002 and 0.041,respectively).Gender,age,perforation size,contralateral disease,operated side,reoperation,and degree of hearing loss did not significantly interfere with *** showed good overall results when performed by residents,although inferior to those reported by experienced *** use of the endoscope,cartilage grafting,and longer preoperative time without otorrhea were predictors of surgical success in this scenario.

Antifungal activity and antidiarrheal activity via antimotility mechanisms of (-)-fenchone in experimental models

BACKGROUND(-)-Fenchone is a bicyclic monoterpene present in essential oils of plant species,such as Foeniculum vulgare and Peumus boldus,used to treatment of gastrointestinal *** studies report its anti-inflammatory,antioxidant,and antinociceptive *** To investigate antidiarrheal activity related to gastrointestinal motility,intestinal secretion and antimicrobial *** A castor oil-induced diarrhea model was used to evaluate antidiarrheal *** transit and gastric emptying protocols were used to assess a possible antimotility *** receptors,presynaptic α2-adrenergic and tissue adrenergic receptors,KATP channels,nitric oxide were investigated to uncover antimotility mechanisms of action and castor oil-induced enteropooling to elucidate antisecretory *** antimicrobial activity was evaluated in the minimum inhibitory concentration model,the fractional inhibitory concentration index using the(-)-fenchone association method with standard antifungal ***(-)-Fenchone(75,150 and 300 mg/kg)showed antidiarrheal activity,with a significant decrease in the evacuation *** activity is possibly related to a percentage of reduced intestinal transit(75,150 and 300 mg/kg).The antimotility effect of(-)-fenchone decreased in the presence of pilocarpine,yohimbine,propranolol,L-NG-nitroarginine methyl ester or *** the enteropooling model,no reduction in intestinal fluid weight was observed.(-)-Fenchone did not show antibacterial activity;on the other hand,inhibits the growth of strains of fungi with a minimum fungicide concentration of 32μg/***,when it was associated with amphotericin B,no synergism was *** The antidiarrheal effect of(-)-fenchone in this study involves antimotility effect and not involve antisecretory mechanisms.(-)-Fenchone presents antifungal activity;however,it did not show antibacterial activity.

External beam radiotherapy(RT)is a leading first-line therapy for prostate cancer(PCa),and,in recent years,significant advances have been ***,RT resistance can arise and result in long-term recurrence or disease progression in the worst-case ***,making crucial the discovery of new targets for PCa ***,we generated a radioresistant PCa cell line,and found p53 to be highly expressed in radioresistant PCa cells,as well as in PCa patients with recurrent/disease progression submitted to *** dissection revealed that RT could promote p53 expression via epigenetic ***,a decrease of H3K27me3 occupancy at TP53 gene promoter,due to increased KDM6B activity,was observed in radioresistant PCa ***,p53 is essential for efficient DNA damage signaling response and cell recovery upon stress induction by prolonged fractionated ***,KDM6B inhibition by GSK-J4 significantly decreased p53 expression,consequently attenuating the radioresistant phenotype of PCa cells and hampering in vivo 3D tumor ***,this work contributes to improve the understanding of p53 as a mediator of signaling transduction in DNA damage repair,as well as the impact of epigenetic targeting for PCa radiosensitization.

The development of injectable bone substitutes(IBS)have obtained great importance in the bone re-generation field,as a strategy to reach hardly accessible defects using minimally invasive techniques and able to fit to irregular *** this scenario,the association of injectable hydrogels and bone graft granules is emerging as a well-established ***,in situ forming hydrogels have arisen as a new IBS *** in situ forming and injectable dextrin-based hydrogel(HG)was developed,aiming to act as a carrier of granular bone substitutes and bioactive *** this work,the HG was associated to a granular bone substitute(Bonelike)and implanted in goat critical-sized calvarial defects(14mm)for 3,6 and *** results showed that HG improved the han-dling properties of the Bonelike granules and did not affect its osteoconductive features,neither impairing the bone regener ation *** multipotent mesenchymal stromal cells from the umbilical cord,extracellular matrix hydrolysates and the pro-angiogenic peptide LLKKK18 were also combined with the *** bioactive agents did not enhance the new bone formation significantly under the conditions tested,according to micro-computed tomography and histological analysis.

Driving Factors of Organizational Innovation

This article seeks to outline the main driving factors of organizational innovation within 19 Brazilian companies from both the public and private spheres, whose performances have stood out at national level. The study comprises one of the stages of APMNI, an assessment methodology for prizes, which emerged from the need for the National Quality Foundation＇s （FNQ） Technical Group for Innovation to disseminate the concept of innovation management to Brazilian organizations and universities. The technical group, coordinated by the FNQ and the Getulio Vargas Foundation - FGV/EAESP, is made up of the following organizations： AES, Ampla, Brasilata, Cemig, Coelba, Correios, Cummins, EDP, Embraer, FGV, Fibria, Fleury, GPC Quimica, Itau, Natura, Promon, Senac, Senai, and Volvo. The problem-situation discussed is that these organizations have different models, dimensions, factors, and scales for assessing innovation management, thus making it necessary to identify in the sample the common factors that drive organizational innovation.

OI 630.0 nm airglow observations,from a new observatory at Bom Jesus de Lapa,were used to study the interaction between EPBs(Equatorial Plasma Bubbles)and the MSTID(Medium-Scale Traveling Ionospheric Disturbance)over the Northeast region in *** the night of September 16 to 17,2020,an EPB was observed propagating eastward,in an apparent fossil stage,until it interacted with a dark band electrified MSTID(e MSTID).After the interaction,four EPBs merged,followed by an abrupt southward development and *** of the data suggests that an eastward polarization electric field,induced by the dark band e MSTID,forced the EPB into an upward drift,growing latitudinally along the magnetic field lines and then bifurcating.

Perceptions About Climate Change in the Brazilian Civil Defense Sector

Few studies have analyzed climate change perceptions in the disaster risk management *** research aimed to understand how civil defense experts are dealing with the climate change topic:what they learn and think *** online survey was conducted between October and December 2021 with 1,063 participants from civil defense agencies in *** findings indicate:(1) most(80.6%) civil defense officers completely agreed that climate change will cause additional challenges to disaster risk management,while 10.1% stated that they are prepared to deal with it;(2) one quarter of the respondents(26.3%) completely agreed that they easily understand the information about climate change,but trust in the sources of information is a challenge-52.4% completely agreed and 40.5% partially agreed with information provided by scientists,but the levels of trust were reduced when referring to governments and press;and(3) about 30% of the respondents thought that civil defense work is associated with the Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs),despite SDGs 11 and 13 being related to disasters and climate *** identification of civil defense’ perceptions on climate change is an important step in seeking pathways for increasing capacity building to achieve disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation.

The fi eld of bionanotechnology has been rapidly growing during the last few years and we can now envision a controllable integration between biological and artificial matter,where new biomimetic structures with a wide range of chemical and physical properties will promote the development of a novel generation of medical *** this work we describe a collagen/carbon nanotube composite which has the potential to be used as a scaffold for tissue *** this biocomposite incorporates the advantageous properties of both collagen and carbon nanotubes,it has most of the characteristics that an ideal biomaterial requires in order to be used as an osteoinductive *** biocomposite is bioresorbable and biodegradable and has the desired mechanical rigidity while maintaining a three-dimensional(3-D)nanostructured *** stability and swelling were achieved under fluid environments by varying the amount of carbon nanotubes(CNTs)incorporated into the *** variations can dictate the degree of interaction between fibroblastic cells and the ***-of-concept was shown by performing an in vitro induced mineralization of hydroxylapatite crystals under physiological ***,the ability to attach biofunctional groups to the CNT walls can open a new road for tissue regeneration since the combination of CNTs with specific growth factors or cellular ligands can create an environment capable of signaling and infl uencing specifi c cell *** observations suggest that collagen/carbon nanotube biocomposites will have important uses in a wide range of biotechnological areas.

Congenital Coronary Variants and Anomalies: Prevalence in Cardiovascular Multislice Computed Tomography Studies in a Single Center

In the era of Multislice Computed Tomography (MSCT), few studies have been dedicated to the evaluation of coronary anomalies and variants. We aim to present, describe and assess the prevalence of congenital coronary variants and anomalies (CVA) in the MSCT coronary angiographic studies performed in our department. All the MSCT coronary angiographies performed in our department, between April 1, 2007 and May 31, 2012 were reviewed. Coronary anomalies and variants were characterized and grouped according to their type: origin, course (including myocardial bridging) and distal ending. A total of 663 patients underwent a MSCT coronary evaluation during this period. A total of 84 anomalies and variants were identified in 80 individuals: 12.1% of the population (80/663). The most frequent variant was the myocardial bridging of the anterior descending artery. Four (4.7%) of the anomalies were considered malignant, corresponding to a prevalence of 0.6% (4/663) in the population. Congenital coronary anomalies and variants are relatively common. In our study, the prevalence was 12.1%, myocardial bridging being the most common. This fact may explain the higher prevalence compared to some series based on the cardiac catheterization studies. Few of these anomalies were considered malignant, with prevalence rates similar to those found in the cardiac catheterization studies.

Conventional kinesiotherapy or Pilates mat exercises,what is more efficient for abdominal weakness?A feasibility study

The aim of this feasibility study was to contrast rectus abdominis (RA) muscle strength and electrical activity after two abdominal training protocols, conventional kinesiotherapy (CK) and Pilates mat exercises (PME). 13 participants were randomized to one of two groups: CK and PME, and were trained accordingly. The upper rectus abdominis (URA) and lower rectus abdominis (LRA) were independently examined and intra-group and inter-group comparison were done. Findings demonstrate a significant increase in RA strength after both protocols, relative to baseline. Significantly increased electrical activation was seen in the URA after CK. Training with PME, although as efficient as CK in strength improvement, produced decreased activation level of muscles. CK training induced an opposite result. The differences after training suggest that CK and PME training programmers may strength RA, but the neuromuscular activation strategies for that are not the same. PME can be incorporated into protocols to improve abdominals strength, and trunk stabilization.
