Yield of capsule endoscopy in obscure gastrointestinal bleeding:A comparative study between premenopausal and menopausal women

AIM To evaluate differences in capsule endoscopy(CE) performed in the setting of obscure gastrointestinal bleeding(OGIB) among premenopausal women(PMW) and menopausal women(MW).METHODS Retrospective, single-center study, including female patients submitted to CE in the setting of OGIB between May 2011 and December 2016. Patients were divided into 2 groups according to age, considering fertile age as ≤ 55 years and postmenopausal age as > 55 years. The diagnostic yield(DY), the rebleeding rate and the time to rebleed were evaluated and compared between groups. Rebleeding was defined as a drop of Hb > 2 g/dL or need for transfusional support or presence of melena/*** A hundred and eighty three female patients underwent CE for OGIB, of whom 30.6%(n = 56) were PMW and 69.4%(n = 127) were MW. The DY was 30.4% in PMW and 63.8% in MW. The most common findings were angiodysplasias in both groups(PMW: 21.4%, MW: 44.9%)(P = 0.003). In PMW, only 1.8% required therapeutic endoscopy. In 17.3% of MW, CE findingsled to additional endoscopic treatment. Rebleeding at 1, 3 and 5 years in PMW was 3.6%, 10.2%, 10.2% and 22.0%, 32.3% and 34.2% in MW. Postmenopausal status was significantly associated with higher DY(P < 0.001), TY(P = 0.003), rebleeding(P = 0.031) and lower time to rebleed(P = 0.001).CONCLUSION PMW with suspected OGIB are less likely to have significant findings in CE. In MW DY, need for endoscopic treatment and rebleeding were significantly higher while time to rebleed was lower.

AIM To evaluate the impact of the timing of capsule endoscopy(CE) in overt-obscure gastrointestinal bleeding(OGIB). METHODS Retrospective, single-center study, including patients submitted to CE in the setting of overt-OGIB between January 2005 and August 2017. Patients were divided into 3 groups according to the timing of CE(≤ 48 h; 48 h-14 d; ≥ 14 d). The diagnostic and therapeutic yield(DY and TY), the rebleeding rate and the time to rebleed were calculated and compared between groups. The outcomes of patients in whom CE was performed before(≤ 48 h) and after 48 h(> 48 h), and before( 48 h groups(P = 0.03).CONCLUSION Performing CE within 48 h from overt-OGIB is associated to a higher TY and a lower rebleeding rate and longer time to rebleed.

Pramipexole, a dopamine D3/D2 receptor-preferring agonist, attenuates reserpine-induced fibromyalgia-like model in mice

Fibromyalgia(FM) is a complex pathology described as persistent hyperalgesia including somatic and mood dysfunctions, depression and anxiety. Although the etiology of FM is still unknown, a significant decrease in biogenic amines is a common characteristic in its pathogenesis. Here, our main objective was to investigate the role of dopamine D3/D2 receptor during the reserpine-induced pain in mice. Our results showed that pramipexole(PPX) – a dopaminergic D3/D2 receptor agonist – inhibited mechanical allodynia and thermal sensitivity induced by reserpine. Relevantly, PPX treatment decreased immobility time and increased the number of grooming in the forced swimming test and splash test, respectively. Animals that received PPX remained longer in the open arms than the reserpine group using elevated plusmaze apparatus. The repeated PPX administration, given daily for 4 days, significantly blocked the mechanical and thermal allodynia during FM model, similarly to pregabalin, although it failed to affect the reserpine-induced thermal nociception. Reserpine administration induced significant downregulation of dopamine concentration in the central nervous system, and repeated treatment with PPX restored dopamine levels in the frontal cortex and spinal cord tissues. Moreover, PPX treatment inhibited oxidants production such as DCFH(2′,7′-dichlorodihydrofluorescein) and nitrite, also decreased oxidative damage(carbonyl), and upregulated the activity of superoxide dismutase in the spinal cord. Together, our findings demonstrated the ability of dopamine D3/D2 receptor-preferring agonist in reducing pain and mood dysfunction allied to FM in mice. All experimental protocols were approved by the Universidade Federal de Santa catarina(UFSC) Ethics Committee(approval No. 2572210218) on May 10, 2018.

Combined Training in the Treatment of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A Review

This study aimed to review combined training (CT) effects on HbA1c levels in patients with T2DM. Searches were conducted in PubMed via MEDLINE and Google Scholar. Of the 14 selected studies, 11 found reductions in HbA1c levels. The interventions that performed both aerobic and resistance training in the same sessions were highlighted. In aerobic training, the best results were in the interventions between 30 and 45 minutes per session, with intensities between 60 and 80% of maximal parameters. In resistance training, the interventions with sets from 8 to 12 repetitions with intensities of 80% and 60% of 1RM respectively, or prescribed by maximal repetitions, were highlighted. We conclude that CT can result in better glycaemic control than AT and RT conducted alone.

Distributed software development has become an option for software companies to expand their horizons and work with geographically dispersed teams, exploiting the advantages brought by this approach. However, this way of developing software enables new challenges to arise, such as the inexistence of a formal, normalized model of a project"s data and artifacts accessible to all the individuals involved, which makes it harder for them to communicate, understand each other and what is specified on the project"s artifacts. With what being said, this paper proposes a knowledge management tool that utilizes a domain-specific ontology for distributed development environments, aiming to help distributed teams overcome the challenges brought by this modality of software development proposing techniques and best practices. Thus, the main output of this work is ontology-based system to support the software development process with distributed teams.

Allelopathic Potential of Wheat on Sourgrass Resistant to Glyphosate

We aimed with this study to assay the allelopathic potential of wheat genotypes in inhibiting germination and initial growth of sourgrass (Digitaria insularis) resistant to the herbicide glyphosate. Two experiments were installed under greenhouse conditions: the first one aimed to assay the potential of wheat genotypes in inhibiting emergence and initial growth of two test plants, and the second aimed to evaluate the potential of those wheat genotypes which performed better at the first experiment, inhibiting the emergence and initial growth of sourgrass biotypes resistant to the herbicide glyphosate. Five doses of aqueous cool-extracted extract from 32 wheat genotypes were applied to tomato and cucumber (Experiment 1) aiming to identify the ones with higher inhibitory effect. The five most inhibitory wheat genotypes were selected for Experiment 2, where the same doses of extract were applied on sourgrass. For both experiments, shoot fresh and dry mass, as well as water content, were assessed. Sourgrass germination is affected by wheat extracts, but initial seedling growth seems not to be affected;wheat genotypes differ in terms of their allelopathic potential in inhibiting sourgrass germination;wheat presents little inhibitory effect on sourgrass.

In 2019,an oil spill in Brazil,of unknown origin,severely impacted coastal environs with the worst environmental disaster ever recorded in any tropical coastal region globally severely damaging South Pirangi Reef area in the state of Rio Grande do Norte(RN).Here we discuss acute and chronic impacts including chemical contamination and economic consequences all over the world and show some evidence of the oil spill in this biodiverse ***,the lapse between the moment of the disastei;and the action to manage it,was hampered by a political agenda coinciding with local and global tragedies that redirected public *** almost 2 years have passed still without the offending party identification or culpability;and poor communities may continue to absorb its deleterious impacts for decades without consideration or *** disaster occurred during the Brazilian government's current issues involving extensive environmental mismanagement,resulting in a slow response from an inept *** is with urgent necessity to spotlight this tragedy in this unique and sensitive reef habitat experiencing the ongoing damaging effects that include socio-economic losses not yet addressed.
