The Weibull function,a continuous probability distribution,is widely used for diameter distribution modelling,in which parameter estimation performance is affected by stand attributes and fitting *** Weibull cumulative distribution function is nonlinear,and classical fitting methods may provide a not optimal *** the use of artificial intelligence by metaheuristics is reasonable for this optimisation ***,aimed and compared(1)the metaheuristics genetic algorithm and simulated annealing performance over the moment and percentile methods;(2)the hybrid strategy merging the metaheuristics tested and the percentile method and,(3)the metaheuristics fitness functions under basal area and density errors.A long-term experiment in a Pinus taeda stand subjected to crown thinning was *** to our findings,all methods have a similar performance,independent of the thinning regimes and *** pattern of the estimated parameters tends to be acceptable,as b increases over time and c increases after ***,our findings suggest that methods based on metaheuristics have a higher precision than classical methods for estimating Weibull *** to the classification test,the methods that involved simulated annealing stood *** hybrid method involving this metaheuristic also stood out,with accurate *** methods showed the poorest performance,and we therefore suggest the use of simulated annealing due to its faster processing time and high-quality solution.

Song divergence indicates an unclear relationship between the Neotropical and Nearctic Horned Larks

Background:Some studies have indicated that the Horned Larks(eremophila alpestris)should be considered as a species *** it split into four species or clades and seven subclades based on genetic,morphological,and biogeographic ***,other aspects like song divergence have not been studied and several subspe-cies have not been evaluated,leading to important information gaps in this group of *** this work,we aimed to assess the differences in song traits and playback response between the Nearctic subclade and the Neotropical or Colombian subspecies ***:We compared six song traits between these groups and performed field playback experiments,to test the response of the Neotropical larks to both *** tested the difference in the variables for separate as well as by principal component analysis(PCA).Results:We found significant differences(pe individual song traits and the PCA analysis between the two ***,the PCA analysis showed a clearer divergence of the Neotropical songs in comparison to the Nearctic songs of different locations within North ***,the playback analysis showed a significantly lower response of *** to the songs of the Nearctic ***:Besides this song divergence,there are important ecological and biogeographic differences between the Neotropical and Nearctic Horned Larks,that indicate an unclear relationship between these two ***,further morphological and genetic studies are required to clarify the taxonomy of the Neotropical Horned Lark and define if they share the same evolutionary history as the other subspecies of the Nearctic subclade.

Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1(HTLV-1)is associated with the development of HTLV-1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis(HAM/TSP).It has been reported that the HTLV-1 proteins(specifically TAX and HBZ)can modulate FOXp3,resulting in an immune imbalance that can favor the progression of HAM/*** review aims to summarize the literature in order to clarify the relationship between the expression of HTLV-1 m RNAs and/or viral proteins(TAX and HBZ)with the expression of mRNA and/or protein FOXp3 and their correlation with HAM/TSP *** systematic review was conducted according to the recommendations of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and *** search strategy was performed on the Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online and Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences Platform using subject *** screening,six articles were included in this *** studies suggested that TAX and HBZ have a directly proportional correlation with FOXp3 in individuals with HAM/TSP,which also presented an increased expression of FOXp3 compared to asymptomatic controls and/or healthy *** systematic review indicates that TAX and HBZ can interact with FOXp3 and that interaction may influence HAM/TSP development.

A grain-size correction for metal pollution indexes in river sediments

according to the List of Hazardous Substances of the Agency of the Toxic Substances and Disease Registry(ATSDR 2017), some metallic elements such as Pb or Cd are still considered as the most polluting elements in the world. These elements accumulate in sediments, and there are various methods available that differentiate lithogenic sources from anthropogenic sources. For that, the natural geochemical background is required, however, its definition is far from unanimous: it can be a global or local value,single or statistically estimated value, depending on the studies. Our study is focused on the Subae River in the state of Bahia, Northeastern Brazil, which was historically contaminated by lead metallurgy. The river sediments were sampled at 21 locations: one at the discharge point of the plant’s rainwater basin,ten upstream, and ten downstream. The total contents of Fe, Ti, Mn, Pb, Zn, Cu, Cr, particle-size distribution, and organic matter were analyzed. The conventional geochemical indexes, i.e., the pollution degree(m Cd), pollution load index, and enrichment factor indicated contamination by Zn, Pb, Cr, and ***, a new enrichment factor is introduced, assuming that the sediments come from erosion of soils in the watershed. After obtaining the natural concentrations of metals in the clay, silt, and sand fractions of uncontaminated reference soils, we corrected the pollution indexes by calculating a new individual background in each sediment sample, according to its grain size distribution. This new approach provided more precise indexes in the assessment of sediment pollution, by highlighting higher contamination of Zn and Pb(around 50%) and at the same time the absence of Cr and Cu contamination, two metals not involved with the metallurgical activity.

Chromium shavings are wet by-products of the leather industry,of which thousands of tons accrue worldwide during leather *** to their chromium content,chromium shavings are responsible for the most important ecological challenges caused by the leather *** are stable towards temperatures of up to 110°C and enzymatic *** high stability is caused by the three-dimensional native structure,typical for collagen,and additional chemical cross-links between the collagen fibres achieved by Cr3+salts in the tanning ***,hitherto chromium shavings are not utilized industrially to produce *** order to generate biogas,this stable structure has to be *** shavings were pre-treated by extrusion and hydrothermal *** prove the enzymatic degradability,the different pre-treatments were evaluated by differential scanning calorimetry(DSC),enzymatic assays,and by measuring the solubility in *** biogas production potential was investigated using batch trials to examine *** demonstrated that both pretreatments allowed enzymatic attack and increased degradability of the chromium shavings reducing the lag-phase of biogas production and the remaining waste.

Human bocavirus in children hospitalized for acute respiratory tract infection in Rome

Background The role of human bocavirus (HBoV) as a respiratory pathogen has not been fulfilled *** aimed to describe clinical and serological characteristics of children with HBoV hospitalized for acute respiratory tract infection and to evaluate whether differences occur between HBoV alone and in *** We retrospectively reviewed data from 60 children (median age of 6.2 months,range 0.6-70.9) hospitalized for acute respiratory symptoms,with HBoV detected from a respiratory sample,using a reverse transcriptase-PCR for 14 respiratory viruses (including respiratory syncytial virus (RSV),influenza virus A and B,human coronavirus OC43,229e,NL-63 and HUK1,adenovirus,rhinovirus,parainfluenza virus 1-3,and human metapneumovirus).Results HBoV was detected alone in 29 (48.3%) patients,while in co-infection with other viruses in 31 patients (51.7%),with a peak between December and *** the 60 patients,34 were bronchiolitis,19 wheezing,3 pneumonia,2 upper respiratory tract infection,and 2 whooping *** children (11.6%) required admission to the paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) for respiratory *** differences was observed in age,family history for atopy and/or asthma,clinical presentations,chest X-ray,or laboratory findings in children with HBoV alone *** viral *** was the most frequently co-detected virus (61.3%).When compared with HBoV detection alone,the co-detection of RSV and HBoV was associated with male sex (P=0.013),younger age (P=0.01),and lower blood neutrophil count (P=0.032).Conclusions HBoV can be detected alone and in co-infection respiratory samples of children with an acute respiratory tract infection.A cause-effect relationship between HBoV and respiratory infection is not clear,so further studies are needed to clarify this point.
