Chronic Diseases of Childhood and the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health: A System.tic Review

The increase in chronic diseases in childhood highlights the need for a biopsychosocial approach to deal with the com.lexity of these health conditions. The International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) results from.the need to im.lem.nt new explanatory evaluative and therapeutic m.dels. Thus, the present system.tic review aim. to identify published studies on the use of the ICF in chronic childhood diseases. As a secondary objective, to m.p the them.s that have already been studied in the area to support the discussion on the expansion of the use of this classification in health services. The system.tic review followed the PRISm. protocol, and the m.del was the PICO acronym. where Population was children and adolescents with chronic diseases, Intervention/Exposure was evaluation based on ICF concepts, Com.arator was any tool, instrum.nt, or intervention, and outcom. was direct or indirect use of the ICF. We selected eight articles, five of which used the ICF as a conceptual tool and three as a classification system. divided into the following them.s: quality of life, evaluation of patients (without using coding) and m.pping the inclusion of the activity’s results and participation in clinical trials. Thus, use of the ICF in clinical practice is still incipient, although it has been recom.ended in guidelines. Further studies are necessary to expand the num.er of contributions by the ICF and to develop the necessary approaches for understanding the classification’s use.

Effect of Waste Oil-Cracking Catalyst Incorporation on Durability of m.rtars

This paper presents research on transport properties and alkali-silica reaction (ASR) susceptibility of m.rtars containing a pozzolanic waste generated in the fluid catalytic cracking (wFCC) unit by the Portuguese oil-refinery. For this purpose, two series of m.rtars were prepared by partially replacing cem.nt with 5%, 10% and 15% of wFCC catalyst. The m.in difference between the two series of m.rtars is the sand reactivity used in their com.osition. The results revealed that wFCC catalyst blended cem.nt m.rtars exhibit an increased resistance against capillary water absorption and chloride m.gration, as well as a considerable inhibition effect on deleterious ASR expansion. However, under the adopted experim.ntal conditions the incorporation of wFCC catalyst in m.rtars decreases their carbonation resistance.

Liver diseases in pregnancy m.y be categorized into liver disorders that occur only in the setting of pregnancy and liver diseases that occur coincidentally with pregnancy. Hyperem.sis gravidarum. preeclam.sia/eclam.sia, syndrom. of hem.lysis, elevated liver tests and low platelets (HELLP), acute fatty liver of pregnancy, and intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy are pregnancy-specific disorders that m.y cause elevations in liver tests and hepatic dysfunction. Chronic liver diseases, including cholestatic liver disease, autoim.une hepatitis, Wilson disease, and viral hepatitis m.y also be seen in pregnancy. m.nagem.nt of liver disease in pregnancy requires collaboration between obstetricians and gastroenterologists/hepatologists. Treatm.nt of pregnancy-specific liver disorders usually involves delivery of the fetus and supportive care, whereas m.nagem.nt of chronic liver disease in pregnancy is directed toward optim.zing control of the liver disorder. Cirrhosis in the setting of pregnancy is less com.only observed but offers unique challenges for patients and practitioners. This article reviews the epidem.ology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and m.nagem.nt of liver diseases seen in pregnancy.

Autism.is a com.lex neuropsychiatric disorder of developm.ntal origin, where m.ltiple genetic and environm.ntal factors likely interact resulting in a clinical continuum.between "affected" and "unaffected" individuals in the general population. During the last two decades, relevant progress has been m.de in identifying chrom.som.l regions and genes in linkage or association with autism. but no single gene has em.rged as a m.jor cause of disease in a large num.er of patients. The purpose of this paper is to discuss specific m.thodological issues and experim.ntal strategies in autism.genetic research, based on fourteen years of experience in patient recruitm.nt and association studies of autism.spectrum.disorder in Italy.

Repression of Cell Proliferation by m.R319-Regulated TCP4

Leaf developm.nt has been extensively studied on a genetic level. However, little is known about the inter- play between the developm.ntal regulators and the cell cycle m.chinery--a link that ultim.tely affects leaf form.and size. m.R319 is a conserved m.croRNA that regulates TCP transcription factors involved in m.ltiple developm.ntal pathways, including leaf developm.nt and senescence, organ curvature, and horm.ne biosynthesis and signaling. Here, we analyze the participation of TCP4 in the control of cell proliferation. A sm.ll increase in TCP4 activity has an im.ediate im.act on leaf cell num.er, by significantly reducing cell proliferation. Plants with high TCP4 levels have a strong reduction in the expression of genes known to be active in G2-m.phase of the cell cycle. Part of these effects is m.diated by induction of m.R396, which represses Growth-Regulating Factor （GRF） transcription factors. Detailed analysis revealed TCP4 to be a direct regulator of m.R396b. However, we found that TCP4 can control cell proliferation through additional pathways, and we identified a direct connection between TCP4 and ICK1/KRP1, a gene involved in the progression of the cell cycle. Our results show that TCP4 can activate different pathways that repress cell proliferation.

Although the use of distinct colors to indicate unprofitability to predators(***)is com.only thought of as an adaptation,our knowledge of its m.croevolutionary effects is *** aposem.tism.is expected to decrease attacks by predators,we hypothesized that aposem.tic lineages should be larger on average than their non-aposem.tic sister groups because of the decreased probability of extinction and/or increased probability of speciation(*** diversification).The results of our sister-group analysis are consistent with the hypothesis that the evolution of aposem.tism.is accom.anied by increased diversification of lineages,with the aposem.tic focal group having m.re species in 11 of 14 pairs of sister *** the apparent advantages of reduced predation risk on diversification rates,the evolution of aposem.tism.is relatively rare and reversions to a cryptic state are not *** addition to the difficulties in evolving a trait that initially decreases the survivorship of prey am.ng naïve predators,we discuss other factors that m.y lim.t the apparent prevalence and success of *** is hoped that the results of our analysis will encourage further analyses of the phylogenetic relationships am.ng aposem.tic groups and their relatives,and of the evolutionary tim. scales over which the benefits of aposem.tism.are the greatest to lineages with this condition.

Localized m.cronutrient patches induce lateral root foraging and chem.tropism.in Nicotiana attenuata

Nutrients are distributed unevenly in the *** plasticity in root growth and proliferation m.y enable plants to cope with this variation and effectively forage for essential nutrients. However, how m.cronutrients shape root architecture of plants in their natural environm.nts is poorly understood. We used a com.ination of field and laboratory-based assays to determ.ne the capacity of Nicotiana attenuata to direct root growth towards localized nutrient patches in its native environm.nt. Plants growing in nature displayed a particular root phenotype consisting of a single prim.ry root and a few long, shallow lateral roots. Analysis of bulk soil surrounding the lateral roots revealed a strong positive correlation between lateral root placem.nt and m.cronutrient gradients, including copper, iron and zinc. In laboratory assays, the application of localized m.cronutrient salts close to lateral root tips led to roots bending in the direction of copper and iron. This form.of chem.tropism.was absent in ethylene and jasm.nic acid deficient lines,suggesting that it is controlled in part by these two horm.nes. This work dem.nstrates that directed root growth underlies foraging behavior, and suggests that chem.tropism.and m.cronutrient-guided root placem.nt are im.ortant factors that shape root architecture in nature.
