Peripheral neuropathies are chronic painful syndromes characterized by allodynia,hyperalgesia and altered nerve *** tissue degeneration represents the microanatomical correlate of peripheral *** to improve the therapeutic possibilities,this study investigated the hypersensitivity and the neuromorphological alterations related to the loose ligation of the sciatic nerve in *** elicited by treatment with acetyl-L-carnitine（ALCAR） in comparison to gabapentin were *** injury,reduction of myelin deposition and accumulation of inflammatory cells were detected in damaged nerve.A decrease of phosphorylated 200-k Da neurofilament（NFP） immunoreactivity and a redistribution in small clusters of myelin basic like-protein（MBP） were observed in ipsilateral *** with ALCAR（100 mg/kg intraperitoneally-i.p.） and gabapentin（70 mg/kg i.p.） administered bis in die for 14 days induced a significant pain relieving ***,but not gabapentin,significantly countered neuromorphological changes and increased axonal NFP *** findings indicate that both ALCAR and gabapentin significantly decreased the hypersensitivity related to neuropathic *** observation of the positive ALCAR effect on axonal and myelin sheath alterations in damaged nerve supports its use as neurorestorative agent against neuropathies through mechanism（s） consistent to those focused in this study.

Excitotoxicity refers to toxicity caused by abnormal concentrations of glutamate in the synaptic cleft that may lead to neuronal death. Since its description, the phenomenon of glutamatergic excitotoxicity has been implicated in the physiopathology of a wide range of neurological and psychiatric disorders, from acute brain damage such as traumatic brain injury, ischemia as well as chronic condi- tions like epilepsy, depression and neurodegenerative pathologies such as Huntington＇s, Parkinson＇s and Alzheimer＇s diseases. Exces- sive stimulation of glutamatergic receptors, mainly N-methyl-D-as- partate （NMDA） receptors （NMDAR）, can have numerous adverse effects on the cell viability, including increased nitric oxide release （NO）, activation of proteases, increased production of reactive oxygen （ROS） and nitrogen （RNS） species and massive influx of calcium ions （Ca2＋）, resulting in cell death. Thus, the use of strategies that modulate the excitotoxic cell damage represents a perspective for the treatment of diseases such as Parkinson＇s and Alzheimer＇s diseases, ischemia, traumatic brain injury （TBI） and seizures.

The aims of the study were to evaluate productive performances and environmental impact of double-muscled Piemontese culled cows. In two trials, 39 Piemontese culled cows aged from 46 to 176 mon were fattened using diets commonly applied in farm conditions. The animals were weighed at the beginning and end of the trials. Concentrate and hay intake were recorded daily. After slaughtering, meat, fat and bone yields were recorded and dressing percentage was calculated. The backward linear regression model was employed for statistical analysis. Results showed average body weight （ABW） of cows as （556.97± 55.99） kg and relatively low dry matter intake （DMI） [（9.17± 0.35） kg d^-1] during the fattening period. The ratio between DMI and ABW, i.e., ratio between intake and weight （RIW）, （1.66±0.18）% was negatively influenced by initial body weight （IBW） and duration of finishing period （D）, but age had no effect on RIW. Average daily gain （ADG） was relatively low [（0.55 ±0.21） kg d^-1, and was negatively correlated with IBW and D, which implied that lower IBW and shorter D could have higher ADG and vice versa. The dressing percentage （DP） was （59.80± 1.83）% and the carcass red meat yield （MY） was （75.17±3.10）%. Nevertheless, N efficiency was very low [（4.35 ± 1.76）%], which must be considered in relation to environmental protection so both animal requirements and a well balanced diet need more attention. In conclusion when Piemontese cows will be culled and fattened, IBW and D should be considered carefully in order to get a reasonable ADG and N efficiency to guarantee productive benefits and environmental protection at the same time.

AIM To analyze the clinicopathological characteristics of patients with both node-negative gastric carcinoma and diagnosis of recurrence during follow-up. METHODS We enrolled 41 patients treated with curative gastrectomy for p T2-4 a N0 gastric carcinoma between 1992 and 2010,who developed recurrence(Group 1). We retrospectively selected this group from the prospectively collected database of 4 centers belonging to the Italian Research Group for Gastric Cancer,and compared them with 437 p T2-4 a N0 patients without recurrence(Group 2). We analyzed lymphatic embolization,microvascular infiltration,perineural infiltration,and immunohistochemical determination of p53,Ki67,and HER2 in Group 1 and in a subgroup of Group 2(Group 2 bis) of 41 cases matched with Group 1 according to demographic and pathological characteristics. RESULTS T4 a stage and diffuse histotype were associated with recurrence in the group of p N0 patients. In-depth pathological analysis of two homogenous groups of p N0 patients,with and without recurrence during longterm follow-up(groups 1 and 2 bis),revealed two striking patterns: lymphatic embolization and perineural infiltration(two parameters that pathologists can easily report),and p53 and Ki67,represent significant factors for *** The reported pathological features should be considered predictive factors for recurrence and could be useful to stratify node-negative gastric cancer patients for adjuvant treatment and tailored follow-up.

BACKGROUND Portal vein thrombosis(PVT) after liver transplantation(LT) is an uncommon complication with potential for significant morbidity and mortality that transplant providers should be cognizant *** subtle changes in postoperative ultrasounds that could herald but do not definitively diagnose PVT is *** SUMMARY A 30-year-old female with a history of alcohol-related cirrhosis presented with painless jaundice and received a deceased donor orthotopic liver *** the first two days post-operatively,her liver Doppler ultrasounds showed a patent portal vein,increased hepatic arterial diastolic flows,and reduced hepatic arterial resistive *** was asymptomatic with improving *** postoperative day three,her resistive indices declined further,and computed tomography of the abdomen revealed a large extra-hepatic *** patient then underwent emergent percutaneous venography with tissue plasminogen activator administration,angioplasty,and stent *** was started to prevent stent ***-up ultrasounds showed a patent portal vein and improved hepatic arterial resistive *** graft function improved to normal by *** decreased hepatic artery resistive indices and increased diastolic flows on ultrasound are often associated with hepatic arterial stenosis post-LT,PVT can also cause these *** Reduced hepatic arterial resistive indices on ultrasound can signify PVT post-LT,and thrombolysis,angioplasty,and stent placement are efficacious treatments.
