Morpho-Structure of the 1982 Lava Flow Field at Mount Cameroon Volcano, West-Central Africa

Basaltic eruptions have been observed to produce structurally complex, compound 'a'ā lava flow fields but their morphometry has only rarely been systematically documented. We document the morphology and structures that developed during the emplacement of the 1982 basaltic lava flow field at Mount Cameroon (MC) volcano over a period of one month. Topographic cross-sections (13 in total) were made from the main vent (~2700 m above sea level (a.s.l)) down to a distance of 5.5 km on the cooled lava surface. Details obtained from these cross-sections include: channel width and depth, levee slope, lava surface morphology and structures. These details enabled us to describe the physical characteristics of the 1982 lava flow field. The inclined (12° - 19°) underlying slopes on which this flow field was emplaced resulted in a characteristic channelized basaltic 'a'ā flow field morphology. This includes a proximal zone characterised by reduced flow width and depth with no subsidiary channels. Slab-crusted lava dominates the proximal channel distinctively bent into convex upward shapes. 7 secondary vents were observed for the first time ~2.5 km from the main vent, with heights of 3 - 15 m. This is a very significant observation since it points to the fact that the flow field emplacement may have been a product of 2 eruption sites as observed at other historical MC lava flow fields. This supposition was ruled out by further evidence obtained from other surface features within the flow field. The presence of these secondary vents still has an important bearing in lava flow hazard assessment. Field observations also revealed the presence of tumulus. This is a novel feature for MC lava flow fields. It displayed a close similarity to those observed at other basaltic volcanoes occurring in association with clinker 'a'ā lava, lava tubes, squeeze-ups and pressure ridges. Water Efflux in Red Blood Cells of Sickle Cell Patients under Spontaneous Deoxygenation

The water transport through Red Blood Cells (RBC) membrane has been previously studied in Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) using oxygenated RBC or under complete deoxygenation. In this work, the water efflux in RBC of sickle cell patients was studied under spontaneous deoxygenation conditions. With that purpose, a magnetic resonance method was used to evaluate the water exchange time (τe) and the permeability through the erythrocyte membrane (P) measuring the spin-spin relaxation time (T2) in doped and non-doped RBC. Carr-Purcell-Meiboon-Gill (CPMG) pulse sequence was used to measure T2 in a magnetic resonance console coupled to one homogeneous magnet system (0.095 T). An increase of the water transport in RBC from sickle cell patients was observed and characterized with a τe value of 15.2 ± 0.8 ms. The abnormal activation of the Psickle, Gardos, and potassium chloride cotransporter channels starting from deoxygenation, as well as, the possible appearance of new pores due to the increase of the hemoglobin-membrane interaction, are suggested to explain this abnormal transport phenotype. The change of the water volume to surface ratio (V/S) in the sickle cells is also suggested to be considered in P calculation under deoxygenation. The results obtained in this work increase the fundamental knowledge about molecular mechanism involved in SCD and could be useful in the development of new methods for diagnostic and treatment evaluation.

The cryptic lifestyle of most fungi necessitates molecular identification of the guild in environmental *** the past decades,rapid development and affordability of molecular tools have tremendously improved insights of the fungal diversity in all ecosystems and ***,in spite of the progress of molecular methods,knowledge about functional properties of the fungal taxa is vague and interpretation of environmental studies in an ecologically meaningful manner remains *** order to facilitate functional assignments and ecological interpretation of environmental studies we introduce a user friendly traits and character database FungalTraits operating at genus and species hypothesis *** the information from previous efforts such as FUnGuild and FunFun together with involvement of expert knowledge,we reannotated 10,210 and 151 fungal and Stramenopila genera,*** resulted in a stand-alone spreadsheet dataset covering 17 lifestyle related traits of fungal and Stramenopila genera,designed for rapid functional assignments of environmental *** order to assign the trait states to fungal species hypotheses,the scientific community of experts manually categorised and assigned available trait information to 697,413 fungal ITS *** the basis of those sequences we were able to summarise trait and host information into 92,623 fungal species hypotheses at 1%dissimilarity threshold.

Aflatoxin and Fumonisin in Corn Production Chain in Bafia, Centre Cameroon： Impact of Processing Techniques

Food safety is to be a vital component of food security, with mycotoxin contamination, a major contributing factor. In linewith this, this study aimed at investigating the effect of maize maturity at harvest, and processing techniques on the aflatoxin andfumonisin levels in maize and maize products. Three maize maturity stages （80, 85, and 90 days after sowing）, two drying processes（sun and barn drying）, three storage periods （one, two and three months） and subsequent maize derivatives under these conditionswere sampled. These were analysed for total aflatoxins and total fumonisins using quantitative ELISA and samples with totalaflatoxins and total fumonisins exceeding regulated levels were analyzed by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry（LC-MS/MS） to determine the sub-types of toxins present. Results obtained showed that all analyzed samples were contaminatedwith total aflatoxins （range： 0.8 to 20 μg/kg） and total fumonisins （range： 10 to 5990 μg/kg）. Sun or barn drying for one weekfollowed by one month usual storage resulted in significant total fumonisins contamination, emphasizing the need of at least twoweeks of drying maize. It was also observed that processing techniques partly reduced the levels of toxins, mainly in maize productsthat have a sieving step.

Background: noncultured epidermal cell transplantation in vitiligo permits the coverage of relatively large areas without culturing cells. Objective: To investigate the effectiveness of noncultured epidermal cell transplantation in treating stabilized vitiligo using objective and subjective evaluationmethods. Methods: noncultured autologous melanocytes and keratinocytes were grafted in a hyaluronic-acid-enriched suspension on superficially laser-abraded vitiligo lesions in 40 patients with refractory stable vitiligo (30 with generalized and 10 with localized vitiligo). The repigmentation was evaluated 3- 12 months after grafting using a digital image analysis system. Furthermore the treatment was evaluated from the patients’ point of view with the DLQI (Dermatology Life Quality Index) and a ‘ global assessment’ . Results: The mean percentage of repigmentation, evaluated at the last follow-up visit,was 72% (median 84% ), and a repigmentation of ≥ 70% was observed in 62% of patients. The best results were achieved in the neck and the presternal region. A subjective evaluation was performed in half of the subjects. The mean DLQI score at inclusion (6.95, SD = 6.68, n = 20) was significantly decreased after treatment (p = 0.013, mean 3.85, SD = 4.13, n = 20). The patients were satisfied with the achieved result, found it worthwhile to undergo the treatment and would choose it again. Conclusion: According to both subjective and objective evaluation methods, noncultured epidermal cell transplantation is promising in patients with stable vitiligo.

Objectives: To investigate the efficacy of epidermal noncultured cellular grafting in patients with vitiligo and the role of postinflammatory, spontaneous, or UV-induced pigmentation in obtaining repigmentation. Design: A prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study. Setting: Ambulatory patients in an institutional practice. Patients were followed up for 3 to 12 months. Patients: A total of 33 paired, symmetrically distributed leukodermic lesions, all resistant to therapy, were observed in 28 patients. nineteen patients appeared to have a stable vitiligo (group 1), whereas there was doubt about the stability of the disease in 9 patients (group 2). Intervention: After laser ablation, a hyaluronic acid-enriched cellular graft was applied to 1 lesion while the paired lesion received placebo. Three weeks later all lesions were exposed to UV irradiation twice per week for approximately 2 months. Main Outcome Measures: Primarily, the percentage of repigmentationwas assessed after 3, 6, and 12months using a digital image analysis system. The repigmentation patternwas also evaluated after 1 and 3 months. Results: A strongly significant difference between cellular grafts and placebo was observed after 3, 6, and 12 months (P nd P=.002, respectively). In group 1, repigmentation of at least 70%of the treated area was achieved in 55%, 57%, and 77%of the actively treated lesions 3, 6, and 12 months after treatment, whereas in group 2 repigmentation of at least 70%of the treated area was not observed at any time point. The repigmentation pattern was diffuse in 94%of the responding patients. Conclusions: After a strict preoperative selection for disease stability, transplantation resulted in repigmentation of at least 70%of the treated area in most actively treated vitiligo lesions. Repigmentation was primarily caused by the transplanted melanocytes.

Forest biodiversity studies conducted across Europe use a multitude of forestry terms,often *** hinders the comparability across studies and makes the assessment of the impacts of forest management on biodiversity highly *** attempts to standardize forestry and stand description terminology mostly used a top-down approach that did not account for the perspectives and approaches of forest biodiversity *** work aims to establish common standards for silvicultural and vegetation definitions,creating a shared conceptual framework for a consistent study on the effects of forest management on *** have identified both strengths and weaknesses of the silvicultural and vegetation information provided in forest biodiversity *** quantitative data on forest biomass and dominant tree species are frequently included,information on silvicultural activities and vegetation composition is often lacking,shallow,or based on broad and heterogeneous *** discuss the existing classifications and their use in European forest biodiversity studies through a novel bottom-up and top-driven review process,and ultimately propose a common *** will enhance the comparability of forest biodiversity studies in Europe,and puts the basis for effective implementation and monitoring of sustainable forest management *** standards here proposed are potentially adaptable and applicable to other geographical areas and could be extended to other forest interventions.

The identification of jets originating from quarks and gluons,often referred to as quark/gluon tagging,plays an important role in various analyses performed at the Large Hadron Collider,as Standard Model measurements and searches for new particles decaying to quarks often rely on suppressing a large gluon-induced *** paper describes the measurement of the efficiencies of quark/gluon taggers developed within the ATLAS Collaboration,using √s=13 TeV proton–proton collision data with an integrated luminosity of 140 fb^(-1) collected by the ATLAS *** taggers with high performances in rejecting jets from gluon over jets from quarks are studied:one tagger is based on requirements on the number of inner-detector tracks associated with the jet,and the other combines several jet substructure observables using a boosted decision tree.A method is established to determine the quark/gluon fraction in data,by using quark/gluon-enriched subsamples defined by the jet *** in tagging efficiency between data and simulation are provided for jets with transverse momentum between 500 GeV and 2 TeV and for multiple tagger working points.
