After spinal cord injury （ScI）, a cascade of events begins. At first, there is physical damage with disruption of the blood-brain barrier （BBB） and the integrity of the nervous tissue. The disruption of central ner- vous system （cNS） BBB alters the endothelial permeability, the protein and chemokines expression and the propensity to release in situ inflam- matory cytokines, overcoming anti-inflammatory signals, facilitating the attraction and entry of immune system cells into the injured spinal cord parenchyma （Gaudet et al., 2011）. As a result, there is a neuroin- flammatory response with changes in blood flow, edema, cell infiltra- tion, apoptosis and release of axonal growth inhibitory factors. Nerve function loss occurs when the nerve impulse propagation is interrupted and do not reach its target. This disorder encompasses neuron and glia apoptosis, accompanied by Wallerian degeneration of disconnected axons, and cNS cells exposure to a hostile microenvironment that hampers axon regeneration （Mautes et al., 2000; Harkey et al., 2003）.

The present study is a report on the use of individual micro fans attached to the lids of mice cages, leading to cage pressurization and internal ventilation. The effect of this ventilation system was analyzed in relation to reproductive performance and lung histopathology of BALB/c, SPF mice, and was based on the results of previous studies, which demonstrated the mechanical efficiency of the system. No statistical differences were observed in relation to interbirth interval, number of offspring born, and number and weight of offspring weaned. Lung histopathology, however, showed that the group of animals kept under the microenvironmental ventilation system for 229 days presented no pulmonary lesions (score 0), whereas animals in the control group, kept in a conventional micro isolator, without ventilation, presented score 1 (discrete inflammatory reaction and hemorrhage, 5 animals);score 2 (hemorrhage, 1 animal) and score 3 (interstitial pneumonia and hemorrhage or peribronchitis and hemorrhage, 2 animals). data demonstrates that the presence and functioning of the micro fans on the lids did not interfere with the reproductive performance of the animals and improve the quality in laboratory animals production, providing them without any kind of pulmonary lesions.

Injuries to the spinal cord result in permanent disabilities that limit daily life *** main reasons for these poor outcomes are the limited regenerative capacity of central neurons and the inhibitory milieu that is established upon traumatic *** decades of research,there is still no efficient treatment for spinal cord *** strategies are tested in preclinical studies that focus on ameliorating the functional outcomes after spinal cord *** these,molecular compounds are currently being used for neurological recovery,with promising *** molecules target the axon collapsed growth cone,the inhibitory microenvironment,the survival of neurons and glial cells,and the re-establishment of lost *** this review we focused on molecules that are being used,either in preclinical or clinical studies,to treat spinal cord injuries,such as drugs,growth and neurotrophic factors,enzymes,and *** mechanisms of action of these molecules are discussed,considering traumatic spinal cord injury in rodents and humans.

Purpose The aims of this study were to propose an alternative method to assess an optimal performance improvement rate(PIR)that would be used as a tool for coaches and elite athletes willing to reach their personal best,mainly those seeking for national,continental or even world record(WR)in middle-distance *** further compared the improvement rate of women *** of the top-10 ranked athletes in the IAAF running these middle-distance events Method The top 10 athletes in the IAAF ranking of 800 m,1500 m,and 3000 m events for each sex were assessed for their history of race times before achieving their personal record(PR).The difference between PR(‘actual’season)and the best race time in the last season was defined as the 1st season improvement rate(1-SIR),whereas the average improvement rate in the last and preceding seasons was the multi-season improvement rate(M-SIR).1-SIR and M-SIR were calculated for each *** There were sex differences in the 1500 m with a large effect size(d=−0.746)in 1-SIR(P=0.001)and very large(d=−2.249)in M-SIR(P=0.001).Women improved more than men before the PR/WR achievements in the 800 m and 1500 m events(P=0.001)and had similar improvement rates before performing PR/WR in 3000 m events(P=0.533).conclusion Women improve more before PR/WR achievement in 800 m and 1500 m ***,in the 3000 m men and women have similar improvement rates in previous seasons before the PR/WR achievement.

This study aimed to investigate the trends of finishers in the Sao Silvestre race in Brazil,taking into account sex,age,and performance levels.A total of 31775 runners(women,n=13847;men,n=17928),aged(45.2±16.8)years,finishers in the Sao Silvestre race between 2007 and 2021,were considered in the present ***(event year,date of birth,sex,and race times)were downloaded from the official race *** man-Whitney U test,Spearman correlation,and robust regression model were *** increased over time for both *** age groups,“31-40 years”(women)and“>60 years”(men)were those with the highest number of *** found a decrease in performance across the years(β=2.45;pcant differences in race times for both sexes(U=42.844;pces than *** time,it was observed an increase in the performance gap between the sexes,but in general,the performance decreased(β=1.76;pders should consider improving the strategies to improve women and young people's participation in running events.

The transformation of quantitative variables into categories is a common practice in both experimental and observational studies. The typical procedure is to create groups by splitting the original variable distribution at some cut point on the scale of measurement (e.g. mean, median, mode). Allegedly, dichotomization improves causal inference by simplifying statistical analyses. In this article, we address some of the adverse consequences of recoding quantitative variables into categories. In particular, we provide evidence that categorization usually leads to inefficient and biased estimates. We believe that considerable progress in our understanding of data analysis can occur if scholars follow the recommendations presented in this article. The recodification of quantitative variables as categorical is a poor methodological strategy, and scientists must stay away from it.

Hemangiomas are the most frequent benign tumors of the liver. Most hemangiomas are asymptomatic and therefore largely diagnosed only in routine screening tests. Usually they are small and require no specific treatment. In some situations they can reach great dimensions, causing some discomfort to the patient. Resection of liver hemangioma is indicated in cases of great dimension tumors causing symptoms such as pain, nausea or bloating caused by compression of adjacent organs. We report a case of a rare giant hemangioma with rapid growth in short time:a 50 year old female reported to our institution with a 40 cm giant liver hemangioma and then underwent a left hepatectomy.

The mechanical properties of Ti−cu alloys processed via thixoforming were ***−cu(25,27,and 29 wt.%cu)ingots were produced via arc melting,homogenization at 950℃ for 24 h,and hot-forging at 900℃,followed by thixoforming at a speed of 8 mm/s after isothermal heat treatment at 1035℃ for 300 *** thixoformed alloys exhibited good mechanical strength,limited plasticity under tensile loading,and reasonable plasticity under compressive *** mechanical strength and plasticity decreased as the cu content increased as a result of the increasing volume fraction of the peritectic Ti_(2)cu phase(transformed liquid),which exhibited a lower strength and plasticity than theα+Ti_(2)cu regions(transformed solid).These findings indicated that the trade-off between the mechanical properties and semisolid processability is largely governed by the cu content.
