Florivory by the occupants of phytotelmata in flower parts can decrease host plant fecundity

Some types of plant accumulate liquid in their inflorescences creating phytotelmata.These environments protect the flowers against florivory,although they may be colonized by aquatic or semiaquatic florivorous insect larvae,whose effects on the fitness of the plants remain unclear.We tested the hypothesis of floral antagonism by the occupants of phytotelmata,which predicts that florivory by the occupants of the phytotelmata represents a cost to the female fitness of the plant,reducing its fecundity.We manipulated experimentally the infestation by 3 florivores larvae species occupants of phytotelmata in inflorescences of Heliconia spathocircinata(Heliconiaceae)to test for negative direct trophic effects on the fecundity of the flowering and fruiting bracts.We found that the foraging of the hoverfly(Syrphidae)and moth(Lepidoptera)larvae in the inflorescences contributed to a decline in the fecundity of the plant.While the lepidopteran impacted fecundity when foraging in both flowering and fruiting bracts,the syrphid only affected the fruiting bracts,which indicates that the nectar and floral tissue are the principal resource exploited by the hoverfly.By contrast,soldier fly(Stratiomyidae)had a neutral effect on fecundity,while foraging in flowering or fruiting bracts.These findings corroborate our hypothesis,that herbivory by the larval occupants represents cost to the host plant having phytotelmata.The negative influence of this foraging on plant fecundity will nevertheless depend on the consequences of the exploitation of resources,which vary considerably in ephemeral habitats such as the phytotalmanta of flower parts.

Effects of the availability of floral resources and neighboring plants on nectar robbery in a specialized pollination system

Many plants pollinated by nectar-foraging animals have to maintain a balance between legitimate visitor attraction strategies and mechanisms that minimize illegitimate visits.This study investigated how floral display and neighboring species composition influences nectar robbing by hummingbirds in the tropical ornithophilous herb Heliconia spathocircinata.We tested the role of inflorescence display,flower abundance,and neighboring species in the reduction of nectar robbing in H.spathocircinata.Our results indicate that nectar robbing hummingbird activity was higher in moderately large inflorescence displays and that the frequency of nectar robbing in H.spathocircinata decreases with increased flower abundance and the presence of neighboring plant species.Neighboring non-ornithophilous plants decreased the frequency of nectar robbing in H.spathocircinata flowers to a greater extent than ornithophilous ones.These results suggest that nectar robbing hummingbirds are attracted to similar conditions that attract legitimate visitors and that spatial aggregation and mixed-species displays may represent a mechanism to dilute nectar robbing effects at an individual level.

Parametric modeling simulation for an origami shaped canopy

This study perceives the developing process of a parameterization modeling in Grasshopper(R)for complex surfaces using building simulation,considering Annual Average of Hourly Radiation as the key-variable.The major goal of this article is to create,simulate and analyze through factorial analysis a modular canopy,based on Origami.The methodology applied consisted of the selection of the form,canopy parameterization,factorial analysis and simulation for radiation.Ladybug(R),together with EnergyPlusTM,were used to carry out the simulations.The object of study was the process of creation of a canopy.In countries with hot and humid climates,such as Brazil,the roofing areas are critical parts of building envelopes,highly susceptible to solar radiation.The simulation was performed for a full year for Vi(c)osa,MG(Latitude 20°45′14″S,Longitude 42°52′55″W,Altitude 648 m),but due to parameterization,the canopy can be simulated anywhere else.As main results,the factorial analysis contributed for determining that the slope of the canopy was the most robust factor to the detriment of the cardinal and collateral orientations.For the best case scenario,the simulation generated levels of comfort of about 74.0%with 15.4%Hot and 10.6%cold for natural conditioned spaces.

Feasibility to convert the NuScale SMR from UO₂ to a Mixed (U, Th)O₂ core: A Parametric Study of Fuel Element—Seed-Blanket concept

Delays in the construction of nuclear reactors due to licensing issues have been a problem across the world, affecting projects in Finland, France, and the United States. Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) emerge as a transition between Generations III+ and IV in order to make nuclear energy more competitive with other energy sources, including renewables. In this study, the SMR NuScale, one of the most promising projects today, is investigated for its conversion into a U-233-producing reactor through the Radkowsky seed-blanket fuel element concept, applied in the Shippingport reactor, in a parametric study. Initially, a validation of the reference reactor (NuScale) was carried out with data from technical documents and papers, thus demonstrating the agreement of the computational model carried out with the SERPENT code. Then, a parametric study is carried out to define the area of the seed and blanket region, proportions of enrichment and pitch length. Finally, a comparison is made between the production of U-233, TRU reduction, burn-up extension and neutronic and thermohydraulic safety parameters. This study demonstrates an improvement in the conversion factor and a considerable reduction in the production of TRU, in addition to the production of U-233 with a low proportion of other uranium isotopes that can lead to the beginning of the thorium cycle with already consolidated technologies.

Using optical coherence tomography images to evaluate fungal growth in reline resins

As changes in hard or soft oral tissues normally have a microbiological component,it is important to develop diagnostic techniques that support clinical evaluation,without destroying microbio-logical formation.The optical coherence tomography(OcT)represents an alternative to analyze tissues and microorganisms without the need for processing.This imaging technique could be defined as a fast,real-time,in situ,and non-destructive method.Thus,this study proposed the use of the OcT to visualize biofilm by candida albicans in reline resins for removable prostheses.Three reline resins(Silagum-comfort,coe comfort,and Soft-confort),with distinct char-acteristics related to wa ter sorption and fungal inhibition were used.A total of 30 samples(10 for each resin group)were subjected to OcT scanning before and 96 h after inoculation with candida albicans(URM 6547).The biofilm analysis was carried out through a 2D optical callisto SD-OcT(930 nm)operated in the spectral domain.Then,the images were preprocessed using a3×3 Gaussian filter to remove the noise,and then Otsu binarization,allowing segmentation and pixel counting.The layer's biofilm formed was clearly defined and,indeed,its visualization is modified by water sorption of each material.Silagum-comfort and Soft.confort showed some similarities in the scattering of light between the clean and inoculated samples,in which,the latter samples presented higher values of light signal intensity.coe-comfort samples were the only ones that showed no di®erences between the clean or inoculated images.Therefore,the results of this study suggest that OcT is a viable technique to visualize the biolm in reline materials.Becausendings in the literature are still scarcely using the OcT technique to visualize biolm in reline resins,further studies are encouraged.It should not contain any references or displayed equations.

Dimensioning Urban Drainage Systems in Housing Subdivisions in the Amazon Using Different Hydrological Models

Hydrological studies for sizing urban drainage systems in the Amazon have often been neglected and little investigated for rainwater projects. This research evaluated alternative hydrological models used in sizing urban drainage network projects in subdivisions with subsidized houses in the Amazonian region in Brazil. Statistical tests of these models were performed for both original and alternative scenarios. The methodological steps we conducted as follows: 1) evaluate the dimensioning of infrastructure project networks, considering two case studies contemplated by the calha Norte Program (cNP) in the state of Amapá;2) test the statistical significance of the dimensioning of network diameters (α considering a) benchmark project (MD or M1) approved by the Ministry of Defense;b) determination of concentration time (ct) and rainfall intensity-duration-frequency (IDF) relationships, as well as estimating diameters using alternative models. The results indicated a significant influence on the diameters of the projected rainfall networks (p cted more unfavorable flow peaks than the original model. We conclude that the benchmarking model underestimated the diameter of the project compared to alternative models, which means the optimized ct parameter significantly impacts dimensioning estimates in rainwater projects in these Amazonian municipalities. This suggests that underestimated parameters in MD may cause inefficiency in the stormwater system projects in future similar scenarios.

Mouse housing system using pressurized cages intraventilated:Reproductive performance and lung histopathology

The present study is a report on the use of individual micro fans attached to the lids of mice cages, leading to cage pressurization and internal ventilation. The effect of this ventilation system was analyzed in relation to reproductive performance and lung histopathology of BALB/c, SPF mice, and was based on the results of previous studies, which demonstrated the mechanical efficiency of the system. No statistical differences were observed in relation to interbirth interval, number of offspring born, and number and weight of offspring weaned. Lung histopathology, however, showed that the group of animals kept under the microenvironmental ventilation system for 229 days presented no pulmonary lesions (score 0), whereas animals in the control group, kept in a conventional micro isolator, without ventilation, presented score 1 (discrete inflammatory reaction and hemorrhage, 5 animals);score 2 (hemorrhage, 1 animal) and score 3 (interstitial pneumonia and hemorrhage or peribronchitis and hemorrhage, 2 animals). Data demonstrates that the presence and functioning of the micro fans on the lids did not interfere with the reproductive performance of the animals and improve the quality in laboratory animals production, providing them without any kind of pulmonary lesions.

Introduction: Proximal tibiofibular joint osteoarthritis is a rare disease most commonly occurring in the presence of either systemic inflammatory conditions or severe knee osteoarthritis. case Presentation: The authors present a case report of isolated bilateral tibiofibular arthrosis in an otherwise healthy 28-year-old female patient. The patient presented with complaints of lateral knee pain. Radiographs and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed bilateral tibiofibular joint osteoarthritis. Trauma, repetitive use injury, and rheumatologic causes were excluded. The patient’s pain was initially managed conservatively, but she subsequently underwent tibiofibular arthrodesis for progressive pain symptoms. We review in this report the current literature on tibiofibular joint osteoarthritis and its treatment. conclusion: Isolated tibiofibular joint osteoarthritis is a rare condition that may progress and requires surgical treatment to achieve optimal clinical outcomes.

Spinal cord Stimulation for Refractary Neuropathic Pain and Its Action on the Neurovegetative Systems

BAcKGROUND: Spinal cord Stimulation (ScS) has been used for chronic refractory pain, however its effectivity on neurovegetative systems has not been evaluated to data. OBJEcTIVES: The study was conducted to evaluate the effect of ScS in patients suffering from refractory neuropathic pain, related to analgesia, quality of life and neurovegetative actions on the digestive and urinary tracts. Fifteen patients acted as their own control related to all evaluations. P considered significantly. RESULTS: 13 patients completed the study. The incidence of indication was 6% in our center for Pain Treatment in the Teaching Hospital. The ScS improved quality of life, bowel transit and urinary function, as improved overall analgesia and decreased daily rescue analgesic (p cONcLUSIONS: In accordance with literature, the incidence of complications was 20%, and ScS improved analgesia and quality of life. In addition, patients also referred to improved bowel activity and urinary function.

The central importance of quantum chemistry is to obtain solutions of the Schr?dinger equation for the accurate determination of the properties of atomic and molecular systems that occurred from the calculation of wave functions accurate for many diatomic and polyatomic molecules, using Self consistent Field method (ScF). The application of quantum chemical methods in the study and planning of bioactive compounds has become a common practice nowadays. From the point of view of planning it is important to note, when it comes to the use of molecular modeling, a collective term that refers to methods and theoretical modeling and computational techniques to mimic the behavior of molecules, not intend to reach a bioactive molecule simply through the use of computer programs. The choice of method for energy minimization depends on factors related to the size of the molecule, parameters of availability, stored data and computational resources. Molecular models generated by the computer are the result of mathematical equations that estimate the positions and properties of the electrons and nuclei, the calculations exploit experimentally, the characteristics of a structure, providing a new perspective on the molecule. In this work we show that studies of Highest Occupied Molecular Orbital Energy (HOMO), Low Unoccupied Molecular Orbital Energy (LUMO) and Map of molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) using Hatree-Fock method with different basis sets (HF/3-21G*, HF/3-21G**, HF/6-31G, HF/6-31G*, HF/6-31G** and HF/6-311G), that are of great importance in modern chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, and other fields of knowledge of health sciences. In order to obtain a significant correlation, it is essential that the descriptors are used appropriately. Thus, the quantum chemical calculations are an attractive source of new molecular descriptors that can, in principle, express all the geometrical and electronic properties of molecules and their interactions with biological receptor.
