Dicyphus maroccanus Wagner and Nesidiocoris tenuis Reuter （Hemiptera： Miridae） are 2 biological control agents in tomatoes. Through the crop seasons, a natural shift in the occurrence of both mirids in favor ofN. tenuis has been observed at the end of the cropping cycle in eastern Spain. To better optimize their conservation, the reasons for the observed change, such as intraguild interactions （IGP） or the influence of environmental conditions, are worth elucidating. To do this, we first studied the IGP of adult females on heterospecific nymphs in the laboratory. We next studied exploitative competition between adults and nymphs of each species when feeding on Ephestia kueniella Zeller （Lepidoptera： Pyralidae） eggs in the laboratory. Finally, to analyze the competitive displacement between both mirids, we conducted a semifield experiment in which both predators were released together. All experiments were conducted at 2 temperature regimes （20 and 25~c）. Adult- to-nymph intraguild interactions occurred only at 25 ~c at very low levels, showing that N. tenuis attacked and consumed a greater proportion ofheterospecific nymphs. Nesidiocoris tenuis was a better competitor than D. maroccanus when feeding on the shared prey in the presence of its heterospecific nymph at 25 ~c. In semifield conditions, N. tenuis showed a competitive advantage over D. maroccanus at both temperatures. We conclude that there is not direct interference between both species, however, N. tenuis has a greater ability to outcompete, since it is best adapted to higher temperatures and it is able to remove food sources for D. maroccanus.

TAL effectors delivered by phytopathogenic Xanthomonas species are DNA-sequence-specific transcrip- tional activators of host susceptibility genes and sometimes resistance genes. The modularity of DNA recognition by TAL effectors makes them important also as tools for gene targeting and genome editing. Effector binding elements （EBEs） recognized by native TAL effectors in plants have been identified only on the forward strand of target promoters. Here, we demonstrate that TAL effectors can drive plant tran- scription from EBEs on either strand and in both directions. Furthermore, we show that a native TAL effector from Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzicola drives expression of a target with an EBE on each strand of its promoter. By inserting that promoter and derivatives between two reporter genes oriented head to head, we show that the TAL effector drives expression from either EBE in the respective orientations, and that activity at the reverse-strand EBE also potentiates forward transcription driven by activity at the forward-strand EBE. Our results reveal new modes of action for TAL effectors, suggesting the possibility of yet unrecognized targets important in plant disease, expanding the search space for off-targets of custom TAL effectors, and highlighting the potential of TAL effectors for probing fundamental aspects of plant transcription.

Tamoxifen(TAM)is the first-line endocrine therapy for estrogen receptor-positive(ER+)breast cancer(Bc).However,acquired resistance occurs in∼50%***,although the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway is a viable target for treatment of endocrine therapy-refractory patients,complex signaling feedback loops exist,which can counter the effectiveness of inhibitors of this ***,we analyzed signaling pathways and metabolism in ER+McF7 Bc cell line and their TAM-resistant derivatives that are co-resistant to endoxifen using immunoblotting,quantitative polymerase chain reaction,and the Agilent Seahorse XF *** found that activation of AKT and the energy-sensing kinase AMPK was increased in TAM and endoxifen-resistant ***,ERRα/PGc-1βand their target genes McAD and cPT-1 were increased and regulated by AMPK,which coincided with increased fatty acid oxidation(FAO)and autophagy in TAM-resistant *** of AKT feedback-activates AMPK and ERRα/PGc-1β-McAD/cPT-1 with a consequent increase in FAO and autophagy that counters the therapeutic effect of endoxifen and AKT ***,our results indicate increased activation of AKT and AMPK with metabolic reprogramming and increased autophagy in TAM-resistant *** inhibition of AKT and FAO/autophagy is necessary to fully sensitize resistant cells to endoxifen.

AIM： To determine prevalence of H pylori infection in symptomatic children in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and to investigate factors associated with HpyloH positivity. METHODS： A total of 395 children with upper gastrointestinal symptoms referred to the Gastroenterology Unit of the children Hospital ＂Sor Maria Ludovica＂ were evaluated for the presence of H py/or/by the ^13c-Urea Breath Test （^13c-UBT）. A questionnaire was applied to the recruited population. RESULTS： Prevalence of H pylo H infection was 40.0% in this population （mean age 9.97 ± 3.1 years）. The factors associated with H py/or/positivity were number of siblings （P 〈 0.001）, presence of pet cats （P = 0.03） and birds （P = 0.04） in the household, and antecedents of gastritis among family members （P = 0.01）. After multivariate analysis, number of siblings [Odds ratio （OR） = 1.39; 95% cI, 1.20-1.61] and contact with pet cats （OR = 1.76; 95% cI, 1.00-3.09） remained as variables associated with H pylori infection. cONcLUSION： The prevalence of H pylori infection in children with upper gastrointestinal symptoms in Argentina was similar to that reported in developed countries. children from families with a higher crowding index and presence of pet cats have a higher risk of being colonized with Hpylori.

The addition of Au3. to spherical amine-capped cdSe@ZnS nanoparticles in toluene at room temperature and under darkness can lead to ternary cdSe@ZnS/Au nanohybrids. We demonstrate that this happens only when the nanoparticles possess a relatively thin ZnS shell, thus showing that thickness plays a key role in gold deposition on the cdSe@ZnS nanoparticle surface. Our hypothesis is that the amine ligand acts as the reductant of Au3＋ ions into Au＋ ions, whose affinity for sulfur would keep them at the cdSe@ZnS surface. This interaction stabilizes the Au＋ ion, making it less prone to reduction than a non-coordinated Au＋ ion. In cdSe@ZnS with a thin shell, Au＋ ions at the surface of, or most probably within, the ZnS shell cause the transfer of cd2＋ ions into the solution. Subsequently, the core Se2- anion, which is a better reductant than the shell S2- reduces Au＋ ions to Au（0）, and large gold nanoparticles （AuNPs） are quickly deposited on the cdSe@ZnS surface in room temperature process, leading to ternary cdSe@ZnS/Au nanohybrids. In solution, these ternary nanohybrids progressively transform into quaternary cdSe@ZnS/Au2S/Au nanohybrids due to the reaction of the shell S2- anion with the remaining Au＋ at the cdSe@ZnS surface, thus leading to the growth of Au2S nanoparticles on the cdSe@ZnS surface while Zn concomitantly leaches from the nanohybrid into the solution. Photoirradiation of the heterostructures with visible light enhances their emission efficiency. comparatively, irradiation of the precursors, i.e., cdSe@ZnS nanoparticles, causes a drastic decrease in their emission accompanied by a blue shift of their emission maximum. Nutlin-3a is a MDM2 antagonist and preclinical drug that activates p53. cells with MDM2 gene amplification are especially prone to Nutlin-3a-induced apoptosis, though the basis for this is unclear. Glucose metabolism can inhibit apoptosis in response to Nutlin-3a through mechanisms that are incompletely understood. Glucose metabolism through the pentose phosphate pathway （PPP） produces NADPH that can protect cells from potentially lethal reactive oxygen species （ROS）. We compared apoptosis and glucose metabolism in cancer cells with and without MDM2 gene amplification treated with Nutlin-3a. Apoptosis in MDM2-amplified cells was associated with a reduction in glycolysis and the PPP, reduced NADPH, increased ROS, and depletion of the transcription factor SP1, which normally promotes PPP gene expression. In contrast, glycolysis and the PPP were maintained or increased in MDM2 non-amplified cells treated with Nutlin-3a. This was dependent on p53-mediated AKT activation and was associated with maintenance of SP1 and continued expression of PPP genes. Knockdown or inhibition of AKT, SP1, or the PPP sensitized MDM2-non-amplified cells to apoptosis. The data indicate that p53 promotes AKT and SP1-dependent activation of the PPP that protects cells from Nutlin-3a-induced apoptosis. These findings provide insight into how glucose metabolism reduces Nutlin-3a-induced apoptosis, and also provide a mechanism for the heightened sensitivity of MDM2-amplified cells to apoptosis in response to Nutlin-3a.

This paper illustrates the benefits of a self-tuning PID strategy applied to a proton exchange membrane fuel cell system. controller parameters are updated on-line, at each sampling time, based on an instantaneous linearization of an artificial neural network model of the process and a General Minimum Variance control law. The self-tuning PID scheme allows managing nonlinear behaviors of the system while avoiding heavy computations. The applicability, efficiency and robustness of the proposed control strategy are experimentally confirmed using varying control scenarios. In this aim, the original built-in controller is overridden and the self-tuning PID controller is implemented externally and executed on-line. Experimental results show good performance in setpoint tracking accuracy and robustness against plant/model mismatch. The proposed strategy appears to be a promising alternative to heavy computation nonlinear control strategies and not optimal linear control strategies.
