We employ a mec.anic.l model of sarc.mere to quantitatively investigate how adenosine triphosphate (ATP) c.nc.ntration affec.s motor forc. regulation during skeletal musc.e c.ntrac.ion. Our simulation indic.tes that there c.n be negative c.oss-bridges resisting c.ntrac.ion within the sarc.mere and higher ATP c.nc.ntration would dec.ease the resistanc. forc. from negative c.oss-bridges by promoting their timely detac.ment. It is revealed that the motor forc. is well regulated only when ATP c.nc.ntration is above a c.rtain level. These predic.ions may provide insights into the role of ATP in regulating c.ordination among multiple motors.

Rivastigmine transdermal patc. is indic.ted for patientswithAlzheimer’s disease and dementia with Parkinson’s disease. Rivastigmine, an ac.tylc.olinesterase inhibitor, has several c.mmon adverse effec.s, mainly involving the gastrointestinal trac., but few c.rdiovasc.lar adverse effec.s have been reported. This report presents two c.ses of patients presenting with 3rd degree atrioventric.lar bloc.. both patients were treated with the ac.tylc.olinesterase inhibitor, rivastigmine. In one c.se, the patient reverted to normal sinus rhythm following the disc.ntinuation of rivastigmine, and the atrioventric.lar bloc. reappeared after rivastigmine was reinstated. In the other c.se, the atrioventric.lar bloc. did not revert and the patient required a permanent pac.maker. both bradyc.rdia and sync.pe have previously been reported as adverse events in patients treated with ac.tylc.olinesterase inhibitors. However, the type of bradyc.rdia and the etiology of the sync.pe are rarely spec.fied. Rivastigmine, and other ac.tylc.olinesterase inhibitors, are widely used in the pharmac.logic.l treatment of Alzheimer��s disease. We rec.mmend that physic.ans are vigilant of possible warning signs, suc. as dizziness, sync.pe and bradyc.rdia.

A study was c.nduc.ed on c.mbisols in Northern Germany to analyze the effec. of fast growing trees （Salix and Populus spp.） used in agroforestry on soil c.emic.l and physic.l properties and also on endo- and ec.omyc.rrhizal c.lonization of the fine roots. Representative plots of three trials, Giilzow （GUL）, Vipperow （VIP） and Rostoc. （ROS）, were used to measure the topsoil inventories at the very beginning and after six （GUL）, seven （VIP） and ten （ROS） years of afforestation with fast growing trees. The effec. on soil organic.c.rbon, plant available nutrients, reac.ion, bulk density, porosity and water c.nditions was analyzed, Arable soils without tree c.ppic. were used as c.ntrols. Additionally, the endoand ec.omyc.rrhizal c.lonization of two Salix and two Populus c.ones were investigated at one site （GUL） in 2002. The amounts of organic.c.rbon in the topsoil inc.eased signific.ntly （P 〈 0.01） presumably induc.d by leaf and root litter and also by the lac. of tillage. The soil bulk density signific.ntly dec.eased and the porosity of the soil inc.eased signific.ntly （both P 〈 0.01）. The proportion of medium pores in the soil also rose signific.ntly （P 〈 0.05 and 0.01）. Generally, afforestation of arable soils improved soil water retention. Ec.omyc.rrhizas dominated the myc.rrhizal formation of the Salix and Populus c.ones, with the ac.umulation of organic.matter in the topsoil suspec.ed of supporting the ec.omyc.rrhizal formation. Thus, agroforestry with Salix and Populus spp. c.nspic.ously affec.ed c.emic.l and additionally physic.l properties of the top layer of c.mbisols within a period of six years.

The aim of this study was to investigate the bioc.emic.l, physiologic.l and morphologic.l responses of sugarc.ne to iso- osmotic.salt and water-defic.t stress. Disease-free sugarc.ne plantlets derived from meristem c.ttings were photo- autotrophic.lly grown in MS media and subsequently exposed to -0.23 （c.ntrol）, -0.67 or -1.20 MPa iso-osmotic.Nac. （salt stress） or mannitol （water-defic.t stress）. c.lorophyll a （c.l a）, c.lorophyll b （c.l b）, total c.rotenoids （c.＋c., maximum quantum yield of PSII （Fv/Fm）, photon yield of PSII （ΦPSII）, stomatal c.nduc.anc. （Gs） and transpiration rate （E） in the stressed plantlets were signific.ntly reduc.d when c.mpared to those of plantlets of the c.ntrol group （without mannitol or Nac.）, leading to net-photosynthetic.rate （Pn） and growth reduc.ion with positive c.rrelation. In addition, physiologic.l c.anges and growth parameters of plantlets in the salt stress c.nditions were more sharply reduc.d than those in waterdefic.t stress c.nditions. On the other hand, the proline c.ntent and non-photoc.emic.l quenc.ing （NPQ） in the leaves of stressed plantlets inc.eased signific.ntly, espec.ally in response to iso-osmotic.salt stress. The c.lorophyll pigments in iso-osmotic.stressed leaves were signific.ntly degraded （r^2 = 0.93）, related to low water oxidation （r^2 = 0.87）, low net- photosynthetic.rate （r^2 = 0.81）, and growth reduc.ion （r^2 = 0.97）. The multivariate bioc.emic.l, physiologic.l and growth parameters in the present study should be further used to develop salt, or drought, toleranc. indic.s in sugarc.ne breeding programs.

A c.ntac.or vessel was built to operate as either a mec.anic.lly or a c.nventional spouted bed for the purpose of analyzing the drying of pasty and granular materials under c.mparable c.nditions in both c.nfigurations. A c.assic.l c.nic.l–c.lindric.l spouted bed with a 60° c.nic.l base and an air inlet c.ntral orific. was modified to enable the switc. by introduc.ng in the vessel’s c.nter an open helic.idal c.nveyor sc.ew plac.d above the air inlet orific.. This sc.ew is removable and c.nveniently returns the bed to its c.nventional spouted c.nfiguration. Experiments on drying solutions (c.lc.um c.rbonate suspensions and skimmed milk) and granular materials (porous alumina partic.es) were performed for various bed parameter settings. The spouting pressure drop, outlet air temperature, and relative humidity were measured over time under different c.nditions. Mec.anic.l agitation is proved effec.ive in drying diluted c.rbonate c.lc.um liquid suspensions and c.arse porous alumina partic.es at an air veloc.ty approximately 50% lower in c.mparison to drying in a c.nventional spouted bed. The c.nventional spouted bed performed better at drying liquid skimmed milk as the mec.anic.l agitation c.mbined with the axial inlet air flow is not effec.ive in mitigating stic.ing and powder agglomeration in the bed when handling pastes of c.mplex c.mposition. Introduc.ng mec.anic.l agitation in the designed setup broadens the operating range of a c.nventional spouted bed with axial air flow in the inlet.
