Solid-core silica photonic crystal fiber is proposed borrowing the concept of golden ratio (1.618) and keeping it between pitch and air hole diameter Λ/d in a subset of six rings of air-holes with hexagonal arrangement. In the case when we have a pitch equal to one micron (Λ = 1 μm), we need air-holes diameters d = 0.618 μm in order to achieve two zero dispersion wavelength (ZDW) points at 725 nm and 1055 nm;this gives us the possibility to use the fiber for supercontinuum generation, by pumping close to that points, pulse compression or reshaping. We analyzed a series of fibers using this relation and showed the possibilities of tunable ZDW in a wide range of wavelengths from 725 nm to 2000 nm, with low losses and small effective area. In agreement with the ZDW point needed, the geometry of the structure can be modified to the point of having only three rings of air holes that surround the solid core with low losses and good confinement mode. The design proposed here is analyzed using the finite element method with perfectly matched layers, including the material dispersion directly into the model applying the Sellmeier’s equation.

Objectives： The burn repair associated with diabetes complications showed considerable changes in the healing process and the development of alternative therapies to favor the repair is important. This study investigated the efficacy of the Casearia sylvestris in the burn repair in diabetic and non-diabetic rats. Methods： The animals were divided into four groups （n = 20）：（C） non-diabetics treated with carbopol gel; （g） non-diabetic treated with C. sylvestris extract in carbopol gel; （DM-C） diabetics treated with carbopol gel; （DM-g） diabetics treated with C. sylvestris extract in carbopol gel. Burn was induced using a metal plate （2 cm diameter/120 °C/20 sec）. Samples were collected on the 3rd, 7th, 14th and 21st days after the injury for histomorphometric analysis （inflammatory infiltrate, fibroblasts, blood vessels and collagen）, MPO （Myeloperoxidase） and nAg （n-Acetilglicosaminidase） dosage, hydroxyproline, glycosaminoglycans, TgF-β1, VEgF, collagen I and III. Key findings： C. sylvestris decreased the inflammatory process during the experimental period in diabetic and non-diabetic animals which has been demonstrated by MPO, nAg quantification, and TgF-β1 expression. C. sylvestris also increased blood vessels and decreased VEgF expression during the studied period in non-diabetic animals. Fibroplasia and collagenase were increased in all experimental periods in the DM-g group by means of de hydroxyproline quantification, collagen I, collagen III and glycosaminoglycans. Conclusions： C. sylvestris application can modulate favorably the time of inflammation and collagenous process in the repair of burn injuries in diabetic rats.

Objective: To assess comprehensive care in the elderly population, as well as the quality of care in Primary Health Care. Methods: This is an exploratory descriptive study with a quantitative approach, conducted from July to December 2012, in the city of Santa Cruz, Rio grande do norte, Brazil. A sample of 130 subjects chosen by drawn was calculated, and data collection was performed at their homes. Results: There were interviewed 130 people, 92 (70.8%) women and 38 men (29.2%), with a minimum age of 60 and maximum of 96 years, with a mean of 72.8, median of 72.0 and a standard deviation of 8.3. Regarding the quality of care ratings of the PHC team, 48.5% (n = 63) of respondents stated this to be good, while 32.3% (n = 42) rated this as fair. Conclusions: In this perspective, one of the most appreciated meanings that were given to comprehensive care by health care professionals refers to holistic knowledge of each patient, resulting in the non-fragmentation of care. Thus, it is noticed that comprehensiveness has some weaknesses that need to be corrected, which shows the need for education and training of professionals assigned to primary health care services.

Painful Symptomatology Reported by Dentistry Students at a Brazilian University

Objectives: Identification of the level of knowledge on ergonomics principles, and application of these by dentistry students to investigate whether painful symptomatology was experienced. An-other objective is the expansion of discussions on occupational health in academic settings. Study Design and Settings: Dentistry students of the Federal University of Rio grande do norte, Brazil (n = 148) were surveyed using the nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire to determine the severity of musculoskeletal symptoms experienced. Data were analyzed through EpiInfo 7.0 to measure central trends and variability 5for quantitative variables, absolute and relative frequencies for categorical variables, and significance between groups (confidence intervals and chisquare). Association analysis (Pearson) was also carried out. Results: Ergonomic measures were not reported by students. Within the musculoskeletal symptoms described, females were the most affected, independent of academic level. Conclusions: Positive correlations were verified between all categories and all anatomic regions (e.g., neck, lower back, wrists, hands, and shoulders). Data suggest progressive worsening of symptoms, which will eventually result in leaves of absence.

In Brazil and various regions globally, the initiation of landslides is frequently associated with rainfall;yet the spatial arrangement of geological structures and stratification considerably influences landslide occurrences. The multifaceted nature of these influences makes the surveillance of mass movements a highly intricate task, requiring an understanding of numerous interdependent variables. Recent years have seen an emergence in scholarly research aimed at integrating geophysical and geotechnical methodologies. The conjoint examination of geophysical and geotechnical data offers an enhanced perspective into subsurface structures. Within this work, a methodology is proposed for the synchronous analysis of electrical resistivity geophysical data and geotechnical data, specifically those extracted from the Light Dynamic Penetrometer (DPL) and Standard Penetration Test (SPT). This study involved a linear fitting process to correlate resistivity with n10/SPT n-values from DPL/SPT soundings, culminating in a 2D profile of n10/SPT n-values predicated on electrical profiles. The findings of this research furnish invaluable insights into slope stability by allowing for a two-dimensional representation of penetration resistance properties. Through the synthesis of geophysical and geotechnical data, this project aims to augment the comprehension of subsurface conditions, with potential implications for refining landslide risk evaluations. This endeavor offers insight into the formulation of more effective and precise slope management protocols and disaster prevention strategies.

A hundred Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains from several clinical specimens from five hospitals in Sao Luís-MA were evaluated for biofilm production, prevalence of the gene algD, adhesion to HEp-2 cells and antimicrobial susceptibility. The most affected clinical specimens and hospital sectors were also evaluated. Most isolates were obtained from the tracheal aspirate (21.0%) and the most affected hospital sector was the ICU (43.0%). The antibiotics with the highest sensitivity rate were amikacin, piperacillin/tazobactam, fluoroquinolones, gentamicin and meropenem and the ones with the highest resistance rate were aztreonam, ceftazidime and cefepime. All samples were sensitive to polymyxin B. In relation to the expression of the gene for ESBL, 50.0% (17/34) of the multiresistant strains showed the enzyme TEM. Most strains showed high hydrophobicity and 96% of the isolates produced biofilm on a polystyrene microplate, 52% were capsule producers, 19% showed mannose-sensitive fimbriae and 39% expressed the gene algD. We observed adhesion to HEp-2 cells and to the coverslip. These factors may be reported in the pathogenesis of this bacterium, what represents a potential risk for colonization of medical devices which favor the establishment of chronic nosocomial infections.

Objectives： Burns are shown as a clinical problem for their severity and multiple complications due to the time required to heal. Therapies that improve their healing are of great importance, especially for being minimally invasive, of low cost and best performance, all related to the speed and quality of healing. This study investigated the effects of the magnetic electro stimulator Haihuá CD9 isolated or in association with Aloe vera in rats skin burns. Methods： Experimental groups （n = 30/group） were：（C） Carbopol gel; （F） A. vera/Carbopol gel; （H） Haihuá＋Carbopol gel; （H＋F） Haihuá＋A. vera/Carbopol gel. Samples were collected on the 7th, 14th, and 21st experimental days for structural and morphometric analysis, hydroxyproline and glycosaminoglycans quantification, zymography for MMP-2 and MMP-9 and Western Blotting for TgF-β1, VEgF, Collagen I and III. Key findings： The expression of TgF-β1 in H＋F was increased on the 7th day and of MMP-9 on the 7th and 14th days. The expression of VEgF increased in the first experimental periods and decreased in the last for the treated groups. There was an increase in the fibroblasts and birefringent collagen fibers in groups treated with Haihuá isolated or in association with A. vera in all periods. The quantification of collagen I increased, while collagen III decreased in H＋F. The higher amount of gAgs and MMP-2 active isoform was detected in H and H＋F during all periods. Conclusions： Considering the results of the present study, electromagnetic stimulation in association with the A. vera extract promoted an increase in the number of fibroblasts, gAgs content, MMP-2 activity, the deposition and organization of collagen fibers, favoring the repair of injuries to second degree burns, and may also present therapeutic potential in this injury type.
