We report the preparation of poly(3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene)(PEDOT)-modified polyvinylidene fluoride electrospun fibers and their use as a novel adsorbent material for the removal of the anionic dye Methyl Orange(MO)from aqueous *** novel adsorbent material can be used to selectively remove MO on a wide p H range(3.0-10.0),with a maximum capacity of 143.8 mg/g at p H *** used in a recirculating filtration system,the maximum absorption capacity was reached in a shorter time(20 min)than that observed for batch mode experiments(360 min).Based on the analyses of the kinetics and adsorption isotherm data,one can conclude that the predominant mechanism of interaction between the membrane and the dissolved dye molecules is ***,considering the estimated values for the Gibbs energy,and entropy and enthalpy changes,it was established that the adsorption process is spontaneous and occurs in an endothermic *** good mechanical and environmental stability of these membranes allowed their use in at least 20 consecutive adsorption/desorption cycles,without significant loss of their *** suggest that the physical-chemical characteristics of PEDOT make these hybrid mats a promising adsorbent material for use in water remediation protocols and effluent treatment systems.

Introduction: Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HScT) often requires a central venous catheter (cVc) for quick and safe vascular access. currently, new technologies are available to protect the catheter insertion site, such as chlorhexidine-impregnated gel dressings (cIGD). Objectives: To evaluate local cutaneous effects associated with cIGD in patients undergoing HScT. Methods: In this cross-sectional, prospective study, we evaluated 25 HScT patients who had a cVc inserted. Patients were visited daily to monitor the cIGD changing procedures and evaluate abnormalities of the underlying skin after dressing removal. Findings: Local erythema was the most frequently detected abnormality, although usually transient and considered secondary to the mechanical trauma of dressing removal. The most severe lesions, consisting of areas of skin loss, erythematous plaques and/or vesicles were classified as skin irritation and presented in 11 (44%) of the 25 patients. An association test showed that skin irritation was more frequent in patients who underwent allogeneic HScT (p = 0.03). Skin irritation was most frequently observed in areas of contact with the non-woven polyester adhesive tape (n = 22;88%), which made up the adhesive margins of the dressing. The cIGD was discontinued in 6 (54%) of the 11 patients who presented severe skin injuries. conclusion: In this study, we detected that skin irritation was more frequent in patients who underwent allogeneic HScT. The most common skin manifestation was skin loss.

Many parameters are usually used as gauges to describe water quality worldwide, such as the concentrations of phosphorus, forms of nitrogen, dissolved oxygen (DO), among others. Though legislative limits for the concentrations of these substances are in place, such is not the case for caffeine. caffeine is a pharmacologically active alkaloid, from the xanthine group, which can be used as a chemical tracer for anthropic influence over water resources. The objective of this study was to analyze the pollution indicators over the Igua?u River, one of the main rivers in Southern Brazil, through the examination of nutrients, DO and their correlations to caffeine. The water samples were collected from 10 sampling sites along the river course, unevenly spaced to better represent the different environmental scenarios present in its basin, extracted from 2014 to 2017. caffeine was detected and quantified through high-efficiency liquid state chromatography. Results show that both nutrient and caffeine concentrations increased in intensely urbanized areas, specially from IG2 to IG5 sampling sites. Downstream from IG6 the contaminant concentrations decreased mainly due to higher river flows and lower population density. caffeine was detected in 82% of the samples, indicating that most of the sampling sites were under anthropic influence.

Objective： This study aimed to investigate, for the first time, the expression of circulating miRNAs （microRNAs） related to lipoprotein metabolism in patients with HF （heart failure）. Medlods： Twenty patients with HF and 10 controls without HF were included. BNP （brain natxiuretic peptide）, a marker of HF severity, plasma lipid parameters and the expression of circulating miRNAs were determined. Key findings： Total, LDL-, non-HDL- and HDL-cholesterol, txiglycerides, and apo A-I did not differ between both groups, but apo B was lower in the HF group compared to controls （p = 0.007）. In respect to miRNAs, miR-33a, miR-144, miR-125, miR-30c, miR-122, miR-26a, miR-185, miR-758 and miR-106b were higher, from ten- to 25-fold, and miR-10b was lower about 4-fold, in HF group compared to controls. In HF patients a negative correlation between miR-26a and BNP, the marker of disease severity, was found （r = -0.552; p = 0.041）. conclusions： Plasma levels of miRNAs involved in HDL and LDL metabolism regulation were strikingly changed in HF patients. The negative correlation between miR-26a and BNP values may suggest the possibility of the rise of a novel biomarker or therapeutic target in HF.

The presence of metastases in the oral cavity is considered quietly rare in the literature. considering metastasis of hepatocellular carcinoma, the occurrence occurs in approximately 1% of cases. The objective of this study was to report a case of metastasis of hepatocellular carcinoma in gingiva, in a patient with a previous diagnosis of cancer presenting a poor prognosis. Furthermore, a review of reported cases has already been performed and found only 20 reports. This case report emphasizes the importance of including metastases in soft tissue of the mouth, in the differential diagnosis of lesions with benign aspect.

Objective: To isolate candida albicans(c. albicans) from the urine of hospitalized patients and assess the virulence factors and antifungal susceptibility profiles of the ***: Yeasts were identified using the chromogenic medium cHROMagar?, the VITEK~?2 system, hypertonic Sabouraud broth, tobacco agar, polymerase chain reaction,and DNA sequencing. The evaluated virulence factors were proteinase production,phospholipase production, and biofilm production on polystyrene. The broth microdilution technique was used to determine the minimum inhibitory ***: All yeasts isolated from urine were identified as c. albicans using both classical and molecular methods. Although 91.3% of the isolates showed no phospholipase activity, 56.5% showed strong proteinase activity and 91.7% produced biofilm. All microorganisms were sensitive to fluconazole, voriconazole and amphotericin B, but 56.5% of the yeasts showed resistance to ***: c. albicans isolates from urine have a high capacity for virulence and can be associated with infectious processes. Furthermore, the high percentage of isolates resistant to itraconazole is important because this antifungal agent is commonly used to treat fungal infections in the hospital environment.

Synthesis of the Prospective Anticancer Molecule Perillic Acid from Orange Essential Oil by the Yeast <i>Yarrowia lipolytica</i>

The bioconversion of the hydrophobic and volatile limonene to perillic acid, a potential anticancer agent, by the yeast Yarrowia lipolytica was studied in two steps. Firstly, experimental design was used for process optimization using high-purity limonene as substrate and secondly orange essential oil containing 89.1% limonene was used as substrate under the previously optimized conditions. Limonene concentration and pH were identified by fractional factorial design as significant factors and were optimized by central composite design. Under optimized process conditions (0.16% (v/v) limonene;pH 6.9), the 24 h biotransformation process resulted in the accumulation of 0.368 g·L-1 of perillic acid corresponding to a molar yield of 23.1%. A subsequent substrate addition under the same reaction conditions doubled perillic acid concentration to 0.793 g·L-1 and a molar yield of 24.2%. The use of orange essential oil under the optimized reaction conditions increased both perillic acid accumulation and yield to 0.872 g·L-1 and 29.7%, respectively. The robustness of Y. lipolytica allowed the efficient biotransformation of a crude by-product of the citrus industry into a valuable fine chemical.

A gastrointestinal(GI) transmural defect is defined as total rupture of the GI wall,and these defects can be divided into three categories: perforations,leaks,and fistulas. Surgical management of these defects is usually challenging and may be associated with high morbidity and mortality rates. Recently,several novel endoscopic techniques have been developed,and endoscopy has become a firstline approach for therapy of these conditions. The use of endoscopic vacuum therapy(EVT) is increasing with favorable results. This technique involves endoscopic placement of a sponge connected to a nasogastric tube into the defect cavity or lumen. This promotes healing via five mechanisms,including macrodeformation,microdeformation,changes in perfusion,exudate control,and bacterial clearance,which is similar to the mechanisms in which skin wounds are treated with commonly employed wound vacuums. EVT can be used in the upper GI tract,small bowel,biliopancreatic regions,and lower GI tract,with variable success rates and a satisfactory safety profile. In this article,we review and discuss the mechanism of action,materials,techniques,efficacy,and safety of EVT in the management of patients with GI transmural defects.

Effects of functional training on geometric indices of heart rate variability

Background： Geometric methods provide an analysis of autonomic modulation using the geometric properties of the resulting pattern, and represent an interesting tool in the analysis of heart rate variability （HRV）. The aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of functional training on cardiac autonomic modulation in healthy young women using the geometric indices of HRV. Methods： Data were analyzed from 29 women, and were stratified into a functional training group （FTG, n = 13; 23.00 ± 2.51 years; 21.90± 2.82 kg/m2） and a control group （cG, n = 16; 20.56 ± 1.03 years; 22.12±3.86 kg/m2）. The FTG received periodized functional training for 12 weeks. The cardiac autonomic modulation of both groups was evaluated before and after this training, and a qualitative analysis was performed using the Poincar6 plot. Results： There was a significant increase in the difference of the triangular index （RRTri）, SDI, SD2, and RR intervals in the FTG as compared to the cG, and the qualitative analysis from the Poincar6 plot showed an increase in the dispersion of beat-to-beat and long-term RR intervals in the functional group after training. No changes were observed in the triangular interpolation of RR interval histogram （TINN） or SD1/SD2. conclusion： Functional training had a beneficial impact on autonomic modulation, as characterized by increased parasympathetic activity and overall variability, thus highlighting the clinical usefulness of this type of training.
