An acoustofluidic device for the automated separation of platelet-reduced plasma from whole blood

Separating plasma from whole blood is an important sample processing technique required for fundamental biomedical research,medical diagnostics,and therapeutic *** protocols for plasma isolation require multiple centrifugation steps or multiunit microfluidic processing to sequentially remove large red blood cells(RBCs)and white blood cells(WBCs),followed by the removal of small ***,we present an acoustofluidic platform capable of efficiently removing RBCs,WBCs,and platelets from whole blood in a single *** leveraging differences in the acoustic impedances of fluids,our device generates significantly greater forces on suspended particles than conventional microfluidic approaches,enabling the removal of both large blood cells and smaller platelets in a single *** a result,undiluted human whole blood can be processed by our device to remove both blood cells and platelets(>90%)at low voltages(25 Vpp).The ability to successfully remove blood cells and platelets from plasma without altering the properties of the proteins and antibodies present creates numerous potential applications for our platform in biomedical research,as well as plasma-based diagnostics and ***,the microfluidic nature of our device offers advantages such as portability,cost efficiency,and the ability to process small-volume samples.

Proactive Semantic Interference (PSI) and failure to recover from PSI (frPSI), are novel constructs assessed by the LASSI-L. These measures are sensitive to cognitive changes in early Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) and preclinical AD determined by Aβ load using PeT. The goal of this study was to compare a new computerized version of the LASSI-L (LASSI-Brief Computerized) to the standard paper-and-pencil version of the test. In this study, we examined 110 cognitively unimpaired (CU) older adults and 79 with amnestic MCI (aMCI) who were administered the paper-and-pencil form of the LASSI-L. Their performance was compared with 62 CU older adults and 52 aMCI participants examined using the LASSI-BC. After adjustment for covariates (degree of initial learning, sex, education, and language of evaluation) both the standard and computerized versions distinguished between aMCI and CU participants. The performance of CU and aMCI groups using either form was relatively commensurate. Importantly, an optimal combination of Cued B2 recall and Cued B1 intrusions on the LASSI-BC yielded an area under the ROC curve of .927, a sensitivity of 92.3% and specificity of 88.1%, relative to an area under the ROC curve of .815, a sensitivity of 72.5%, and a specificity of 79.1% obtained for the paper-and-pencil LASSI-L. Overall, the LASSI-BC was comparable, and in some ways, superior to the paper-and-pencil LASSI-L. Advantages of the LASSI-BC include a more standardized administration, suitability for remote assessment, and an automated scoring mechanism that can be verified by a built-in audio recording of responses.

Historically,studies of condition-dependent signals in animals have been male-centric,but recent work suggests that female ornaments can also communicate individual quality(e.g.,disease state,fecundity).There also has been a surge of interest in how urbanization alters signaling traits,but we know little about if and how cities affect signal expression in female *** measured carotenoid-based plumage coloration and coccidian(Isospora spp.)parasite burden in desert and city populations of house finches Haemorhous mexicanus to examine links between urbanization,health state,and feather pigmentation in males and *** earlier work,we showed that male house finches are less colorful and more parasitized in the city,and we again detected such patterns in this study for males;however,urban females were less colorful,but not more parasitized,than rural ***,contrary to rural populations,we found that urban birds(regardless of sex)with larger patches of carotenoid coloration were also more heavily infected with *** results show that urban environments can disrupt condition-dependent color expression and highlight the need for more studies on how cities affect disease and signaling traits in both male and female animals.

Simultaneous overabundance and scarcity of inorganic phosphate(Pi)is a critical issue driving the development of innovative water/wastewater treatment technologies that not only facilitate Pi removal to prevent eutrophication,but also recover Pi for agricultural ***,a cell-surface expressed high-affinity phosphate binding protein(PstS)system was developed,and its Pi capture and release potential was *** was genetically modified to express PstS on its outer membrane using the ice nucleation protein(INP)as an anchoring *** of protein expression and localization were performed utilizing SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis(SDS-PAGe),western blot,and outer membrane separation *** surface characterization was investigated through acid-base titration,X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS),and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FTIR).These tests provided information on the macromolecular structure and composition of the bacteria surface as well as the proton-exchange properties of the surface functional groups(i.e.,pKa values).Phosphate desorption and adsorption batch experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of temperature,pH,and ionic strength on phosphate capture and *** PstS surface-displayed cells demonstrated greater potential to release and capture phosphate compared to non-modified *** temperatures up to 40℃,basic pH conditions(pH=10.5),and higher ionic strength up to 1.0 mol/L KCl promoted 20%-50%higher phosphate release.

BACKGROUND： Cancer cachexia is the wasting condition that is often seen in advanced stage cancer patients. This wasting is largely attributable to a systemic and progressive loss of skeletal muscle mass that greatly hinders performance of normal daily activities, resulting in reduced quality of life. Moreover, it negatively influences the prognosis of cancer patients. A general consensus in the field is that the loss of muscle mass is due both to an increase in protein degradation and a decrease in protein synthesis. Recent studies using preclinical models for studying cachexia have been useful in identifying the contribution of inflammatory cytokines （e.g. tumor necrosis factor-a and Interleukin-6）, and myostatin receptors （e.g. the type IIB activin receptor） to cachexia development, and have led to several clinical trials. However, many questions remain about the molecular mechanisms thought to play a role in the development of cachexia. MeTHODS： We conducted a literature search using search engines, such as PubMed and Google Scholar to identify publications within the cancer cachexia field. ReSULTS- We summarized our current knowledge of： 1） the driving mechanisms of cancer cachexia, 2） the preclinical models available for studying the condition, and 3） the findings of recent clinical trials. CONCLUSION： Cancer cachexia is a complex and variable condition that currently has no standard effective therapeutic treatment. Further studies are desperately needed to better understand this condition and develop effective combination treatments for patients.

Global maps of bioclimatic variables currently exist only at very coarse spatial resolution(***).For ecological studies requiring higher resolved information,this spatial resolution is often *** aim of this study is to estimate important bioclimatic variables of Mongolia from earth Observation(eO)data at a higher spatial resolution of 1 *** analysis used two different satellite time series data sets:land surface temperature(LST)from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer(MODIS),and precipitation(P)from Climate Hazards Group Infrared Precipitation with Stations(CHIRPS).Monthly maximum,mean,and minimum air temperature were estimated from Terra MODIS satellite(collection 6)LST time series product using the random forest(RF)regression *** total precipitation data were obtained from CHIRPS version *** on this primary data,spatial maps of 19 bioclimatic variables at a spatial resolution of 1 km were generated,representing the period *** tested the relationship between estimated bioclimatic variables(SatClim)and WorldClim bioclimatic variables version 2.0(WorldClim)using determination coefficient(R^(2)),root mean square error(RMSe),and normalized root mean square error(nRMSe)and found overall good *** the set of 19 WorldClim bioclimatic variables,17 were estimated with a coefficient of determination(R^(2))higher than 0.7 and normalized RMSe(nRMSe)lower than 8%,confirming that the spatial pattern and value ranges can be retrieved from satellite data with much higher spatial resolution compared to *** the two bioclimatic variables related to temperature extremes(i.e.,annual mean diurnal range and isothermality)were modeled with only moderate accuracy(R^(2) of about 0.4 with nRMSe of about 11%).Generally,precipitation-related bioclimatic variables were closer correlated with WorldClim compared to temperature-related bioclimatic *** overall success of the modeling was attributed to the f
