Biochar applications influence soil physical and chemical properties,microbial diversity,and crop productivity:a meta-analysis

Biochar is a widely known soil *** we synthesize the available information on influence of biochar application on different soil properties and crop productivity using *** data on influence of biochar applications on different soil physical,chemical,microbial properties,and crop productivity were extracted from literature and statistically *** on selection criteria,59 studies from the literature published between 2012 and 2021 were selected for the *** were developed between effect size of biochar application on different soil properties and crop *** of biochar increased soil pH,cation exchange capacity,and organic carbon by 46%,20%,and 27%,respectively,with greater effects in coarse and fine-textured *** on chemical properties were variable among biochar prepared from different *** physical properties,biochar application reduced bulk densities by 29%and increased porosity by 59%.Biochar prepared at higher pyrolytic temperatures(>500℃)improved bulk density and porosity to greater extents(31%and 66%,respectively).Biochar prepared at lower pyrolytic temperatures(with more diverse bacterial populations in medium and coarse textured soils,while fungal diversity increased in fine textured *** applications increased crop productivity only in fine and coarse textured *** effect size of biochar application on crop productivity was correlated with responses to physical properties of *** meta-analysis highlighted the need to conduct long-term field experiments to provide better explanations for changes in biochar properties as it undergoes aging,its longer-term effects on soil properties,and timing of re-application of different biochars.

An Interview with Peter Deadman—Acupuncture Pioneer and Founder of The Journal of Chinese Medicine

This interview was conducted on August 21st, 2022 by charles Buck and Ioannis Solos. Peter Deadman has worked in the field of health promotion for 50 years. He co-founded Infinity Foods(an organic and natural foods workers co-op) in 1971, followed by the Brighton Natural Health Centre-a charity dedicated to teaching ways to improve personal, community and planetary health and wellbeing. He qualified as an acupuncturist in 1978 and in Chinese herbal medicine in 1990. He founded The Journal of Chinese Medicine(Uk) in 1979(Fig. 1), and co-authored A Manual of Acupuncture(published in 1998). He is the author of Live well Live Long: Teachings from the Chinese Nourishment of Life Tradition. He has taught Chinese medicine and health promotion internationally for decades and is a dedicated practitioner and teacher of Qi Gong(气功).

BACkGROUND The sphericity of the femoral head is a metric used to evaluate hip pathologies and is associated with the development of osteoarthritis and femoral-acetabular *** To analyze the three-dimensional asphericity of the femoral head of asymptomatic pediatric *** hypothesized that femoral head asphericity will vary significantly between male and female pediatric hips and increase with age in both *** Computed tomography scans were obtained on 158 children and adolescents from a single institution in the United States(8-18 years;50%male)without hip *** femoral measurements including the femoral head diameter,femoral head volume,residual volume,asphericity index,and local diameter difference were used to evaluate femoral head *** In both sexes,the residual volume increased by age(P13 years)in females,there were no sex-differences in residual volume and aspherity *** were no age-related changes in mean diameter difference in both sexes(P=0.07)with no significant sex-differences across different age groups(P=0.06).In contrast,there were significant increases in local aspherity(maximum diameter difference)across whole surface of the femoral head and all quadrants except the inferior regions in males(P=0.03).There were no sex-differences in maximum diameter difference at any regions and age group(P>0.05).Increased alpha angle was only correlated to increased mean diameter difference across overall surface of the femoral head(P=0.024).CONCLUSION There is a substantial localized asphericity in asymptomatic hips which increases with age *** 2D measured alpha angle can capture overall asphericity of the femoral head,it may not be sensitive enough to represent regional asphericity patterns.

Further Studies of the Cap Pushing Response in Honey Bees (Apis mellifera)

The Cap Pushing Response (CPR) is a free-flying technique used to study learning and memory in honey bees (Apis mellifera). The series of experiments outlined in this paper aimed to test whether honey bees exhibit the cognitive concept of “expectancy” utilizing the CPR in a weight differentiation paradigm. Five previous experiments in our laboratory have explored whether the concept of expectancy can account for honey bee performance and have all failed to support the cognitive interpretation. The first experiment examined if bees could differentiate between the two caps in the amount of force they used to push the cap and the distance the cap was pushed when the caps were presented one at a time. The second experiment explored cap weight preference by presenting bees with a choice between the two caps. The third and fourth experiments tested the bee’s ability to expect reward or punishment based on cap weight. Results revealed that bees were found to have a strong preference for the light cap and therefore were not able to expect reward or punishment based on cap weight. These experiments contribute to the debate on whether bees have “cognitive” representations and continue to support the behaviorist interpretation.

As global energy demand continues to rise and climate change accelerates,the need for sustainable and energy-efficient cooling solutions has reached a critical *** air conditioning systems heavily rely on energy-intensive mechanical cooling,which significantly contributes to both electricity demand and greenhouse gas *** cooling strategies,particularly radiative cooling(RC)and evaporative cooling(EC),present an alternative approach by harnessing natural processes for temperature *** standalone RC can be affected by weather conditions and EC relies on water availability,Radiative-coupled EC(REC)offers a versatile and sustainable cooling solution suitable for various *** we summarize an overview of the theoretical foundations and mathematical models of REC,encompassing REC by bulk water(REC-Bw),REC by perspiration(REC-P),and REC by sorbed water(REC-Sw).Moreover,we explore a range of applications,spanning from industrial processes to personal thermal management,and examine the advantages and challenges associated with each REC *** significance of REC lies in its potential to revolutionize cooling technology,reduce energy consumption,and minimize the environmental ***-Bw can conserve water resources in industrial cooling processes,while REC-P offers innovative solutions for wearable electronics and ***-Sw’s adaptability makes it suitable for food preservation and future potable cooling *** addressing the challenges posed by REC,including water consumption,textile design,and optimization of bilayer structures,we can unlock the transformative potential of REC and contribute to sustainable cooling technologies in a warming world.
