Reduced Spring Precipitation Bias and Associated Physical Causes over South China in FGOALS-f3 Climate Models:Experiments with the Horizontal Resolutions

Considerable spring precipitation occurs over South China(SC),a region that is adjacent to large-scale Asian topography and *** reasonable simulation is crucial for improving regional climate *** study investigates spring precipitation biases over SC and their possible causes in atmosphere-only and coupled Flexible Global Ocean–Atmosphere–Land System finite-volume version 3(FGOALS-f3) models with different horizontal *** performance of spring precipitation simulation over SC varies across different FGOALS-f3 model versions,with the best reproducibility in the high-resolution coupled model(25 km).In the low-resolution atmosphere-only model(100–125 km),the precipitation dry bias over SC is closely linked to overestimated surface sensible forcing over the eastern Tibetan Plateau(TP),which weakens the subtropical anticyclone over the western Pacific(SAWP) through regional circulation *** contrast,the high-resolution atmosphere-only model further amplifies surface thermal forcing in the Asian continents,causing intensified land–sea thermal contrast between the Southeast Asian continents and western Pacific,enhanced southerly winds and SAWP,and increased water vapor transport into ***,the reduced middle–high level cold bias over 10°–30°N in the high-resolution atmosphere-only model intensifies the East Asian westerly jet and ascent over SC,leading to enhanced spring precipitation *** high-resolution coupled model simulation not only reduces sea surface cold bias over the Bay of Bengal,thus intensifying the Indian–Burma trough and strengthening low-level water vapor transport into SC,but also enhances ascent over *** a result,the high-resolution coupled model better reproduces the magnitude and pattern of spring precipitation over SC than its atmosphere-only *** with low-resolution models,the domain-mean spring precipitation dry bias decreases by 11.2% over SC in the high-resolution atmosphere-only mod

Unrealistic treatment of detrained water substance in FGOALS-s2 and its influence on the model's climate sensitivity

Based on a series of aqua-planet and air–sea coupled experiments,the influence of unrealistic treatment of water substance in the Flexible Global Ocean–Atmosphere–Land System Model,spectral version 2（FGOALS-s2）,on the model＇s climate sensitivity is investigated in this *** the model does not adopt an explicit microphysics scheme,the detrained water substance from the convection scheme is converted back to the *** procedure could lead to an additional increase of water vapor in the atmosphere,which could strengthen the model＇s climate *** sensitivity experiments confirm this *** removing the water vapor converted from the detrained water substance,the water vapor reduced significantly in the upper troposphere and the high clouds also *** calculations show that the water vapor reduced almost 10% of the total water vapor,and 50% at 150 h Pa,when the detrained water substance was removed,contributing to the 30% atmospheric surface temperature *** study calls for an explicit microphysics scheme to be introduced into the model in order to handle the detrained water vapor and thus improve the model＇s simulation skill.

1970—2020年黄土高原水蚀风蚀交错区极端降水时空变化研究及驱动因素分析

黄土高原水蚀风蚀交错区作为中国北方典型的生态脆弱区,因其独特地形和气候条件,极端降雨事件对其环境和生态系统的影响更加突出。选取水蚀风蚀交错区28个气象站点,结合RClimDex模型计算11个极端降水指数,采用线性相关分析法、Mann-Kendall趋势检验法和小波交叉法,分析了1970—2020年黄土高原水蚀风蚀交错区极端降水事件时空分布特征,探讨了极端降水事件的驱动因素。结果表明:(1)1970—2020年水蚀风蚀交错区持续干燥日数(CDD)呈下降趋势,其余10个指数呈上升趋势,反映出近50a研究区极端降水事件的频率、量级和强度不断增加。交错区年降水量增加和极端降水事件增加具有密切关系,且极端降水事件增加主要是由中雨日数(R10)和大雨日数(R20)引起。(2)1970—2020年极端降水事件在全区整体为增加趋势,交错区中部和西南部极端降水事件显著发生,陕西段极端降水量和强度呈显著增加趋势且极端化程度更显著。(3)湿日总降水量(PRCPTOT)、暴雨日数(R25)、5d最大降水量(R5d)3个极端降水指数,与影响因子厄尔尼诺-南方涛动(ENSO)、东亚夏季风(EASM)和太阳黑子(SN)具有不同的功率,与SN的交叉小波变换功率最大,说明影响因子中SN和极端降水指数的相关性最高,SN对极端降水事件的影响最大。

Assessment of the Summer South Asian High in Eighteen CMIP5 Models

The South Asian High(SAH) is one of the most important components of the Asian summer monsoon system. To understand the ability of state-of-the-art general circulation models(GCMs) to capture the major characteristics of the SAH, the authors evaluate 18 atmospheric models that participated in the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5/Atmospheric Model Intercomparison Project(CMIP5/AMIP). Results show that the multi-model ensemble(MME) mean is able to capture the climatological pattern of the SAH, although its intensity is slightly underestimated. For the interannual variability of the SAH, the MME exhibits good correlation with the reanalysis for the area and intensity index, but poor skill in capturing the east-west oscillation of the SAH. For the interdecadal trend, the MME shows pronounced increasing trends from 1985 to 2008 for the area and intensity indexes, which is consistent with the reanalysis, but fails to capture the westward shift of the SAH center. The individual models show different capacities for capturing climatological patterns, interannual variability, and interdecadal trends of the SAH. Several models fail to capture the climatological pattern, while one model overestimates the intensity of the SAH. Most of the models show good correlations for interannual variability, but nearly half exhibit high root-mean-square difference(RMSD) values. Six models successfully capture the westward shift of the SAH center in the interdecadal trends, while other models fail. The possible causes of the systematic biases involved in several models are also discussed.

Interannual Influences of the Surface Potential Vorticity Forcing over the Tibetan Plateau on East Asian Summer Rainfall

The influences of interannual surface potential vorticity forcing over the Tibetan Plateau(TP)on East Asian summer rainfall(EASR)and upper-level circulation are explored in this *** results show that the interannual EASR and associated circulations are closely related to the surface potential vorticity negative uniform leading mode(PVNUM)over the *** the PVNUM is in the positive phase,more rainfall occurs in the Yangtze River valley,South Korea,Japan,and part of northern China,less rainfall occurs in southern China,and vice versa.A possible mechanism by which PVNUM affects EASR is *** air induced by the positive phase of PVNUM could stimulate significant upward motion and a lower-level anomalous cyclone over the *** a result,a dipole heating mode with anomalous cooling over the southwestern TP and anomalous heating over the southeastern TP is *** experiment results regarding this dipole heating mode indicate that anomalous cooling over the southwestern TP leads to local and northeastern Asian negative height anomalies,while anomalous heating over the southeastern TP leads to local positive height *** results greatly resemble the realistic circulation pattern associated with *** analysis indicates that the anomalous water vapor transport associated with this anomalous circulation pattern is responsible for the anomalous ***,changes in surface potential vorticity forcing over the TP can induce changes in EASR.

Formation and Variation of the Atmospheric heat Source over the Tibetan Plateau and Its Climate Effects

To cherish the memory of the late Professor Duzheng YE on what would have been his 100 th birthday, and to celebrate his great accomplishment in opening a new era of Tibetan Plateau（TP） meteorology, this review paper provides an assessment of the atmospheric heat source（AHS） over the TP from different data resources, including observations from local meteorological stations, satellite remote sensing data, and various reanalysis datasets. The uncertainty and applicability of these heat source data are evaluated. Analysis regarding the formation of the AHS over the TP demonstrates that it is not only the cause of the atmospheric circulation, but is also a result of that circulation. Based on numerical experiments, the review further demonstrates that land–sea thermal contrast is only one part of the monsoon story. The thermal forcing of the Tibetan–Iranian Plateau plays a significant role in generating the Asian summer monsoon（ASM）, i.e., in addition to pumping water vapor from sea to land and from the lower to the upper troposphere, it also generates a subtropical monsoon–type meridional circulation subject to the angular momentum conservation, providing an ascending-air large-scale background for the development of the ASM.

This paper reviews recent advances regarding land–atmosphere–ocean coupling associated with the Tibetan Plateau(TP) and its climatic impacts. Thermal forcing over the TP interacts strongly with that over the Iranian Plateau, forming a coupled heating system that elevates the tropopause, generates a monsoonal meridional circulation over South Asia and creates conditions of large-scale ascent favorable for Asian summer monsoon development. TP heating leads to intensification and westward extension(northward movement) of the South Asian High(Atlantic Intertropical Convergence Zone), and exerts strong impacts on upstream climate variations from North Atlantic to West Asia. It also affects oceanic circulation and buoyancy fields via atmospheric stationary wave trains and air–sea interaction processes, contributing to formation of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation. The TP thermal state and atmospheric–oceanic conditions are highly interactive and Asian summer monsoon variability is controlled synergistically by internal TP variability and external forcing factors.

Synthesis and Crystal Structure of Zn(II) Complex with Tridentate Ligand N-(2-Hydroxy-1-naphthylidene)-L-serine

A new Zn（Ⅱ） complex, [Zn（L）2（H2O）2], where H2L = N-（2-hydroxy-1-naphthyli- dene）-L-sedne, has been synthesized and characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The crystal belongs to monoclinic system, space group C2/c with a = 13.669（2）, b = 6.4657（9）, c = 31.463（5） A, β = 98.010（2）°, V = 2753.6（7） A^3, Z = 8, Mr = 358.64, Dc = 1.730 g/cm^3, F（000） = 1472,μ（MoKa） = 1.814 mm^-1, the final R = 0.0355 and wR = 0.0706. The Zn（Ⅱ） atom adopts a square-pyramidal geometry coordinated by the tridentate ligand and two water molecules. Intermolecular hydrogen bonds link the complex molecules into a two-dimensional layer.

Interannual variability in the onset of the South China Sea summer monsoon from 1997 to 2014

Using observed and reanalysis datasets,the South China Sea summer monsoon（SCSSM） onset process is analyzed in each year from 1997 to *** mean（5-20°N,110-120°E） 850 hPa zonal wind,precipitation,and SST are used as indices to describe SCSSM *** distinct onset types are identified：among the 18 years studied,nine are normal onset years,which are characterized by a well-established westerly wind and associated precipitation over the South China Sea（SCS）;eight are intermittent onset years,in which monsoon precipitation does not occur continuously following the establishment of the westerly wind over the SCS;and one year,2014,is a delayed onset year,in which the western Pacific subtropical high dominates over the SCS after the seasonal transition and prevents the monsoon onset.A comparison of the first two types suggests that a positive SST gradient in the northern Indian Ocean and local SST warming in the SCS are two key factors in the normal SCSSM onset *** regard to the influence of the El Nino-Southern Oscillation background,there are four late onset years（1997,1998,2007,and 2010） that coincide with El Nino events,but only two early-onset years（1999 and 2012） out of the six years featuring La Nina *** analysis suggests that the zonal thermal contrast across the Indian and western Pacific oceans modulates monsoon onset in La Nina years.
