Convergence in leaf phenology traits of two understorey ferns in the northwestern Iberian peninsula

Aims plants control leaf phenology to maximize annual photosynthetic *** ferns play an important ecological role in many habitats,especially forests,their phenology traits have been poorly ***,we investigate the leaf phenology of two ferns of the forest understorey and analyse the relationship between the timing of leaf emergence and spore dispersal and the effect of between-year climatic *** We compared the leafing and sporing phenologies of two ferns with very large(>2 m),overwintering leaves:Culcita macrocarpa and Woodwardia *** regularly monitored individuals of six popu-lations in the northwestern Iberian peninsula during a 3-year *** studied eight phenology variables:leafing start date,leafing end date,leaf expansion time,number of new leaves per individual,between-individual synchrony,within-individual synchrony,percentage of fertile leaves and spore release *** also determined leaf mass per area(LMA)and gathered data on air temperature and *** findings Both *** and *** produce few leaves(~2 leaves individual−1 year−1),which expand simultaneously for a very long period(from midwinter to early summer),are retained for more than 1 year(37 and 19 months,respectively)and have relatively high *** traits,together with large leaf size,have also been found in seed plants from the forest understorey and represent adap-tations to this light-limited *** of both study ferns are simultaneously released in late winter,with little between-year variation caused by differences in air *** remarkable similarity between species suggests that the convergence in tim-ing of leaf emergence favours the convergence in timing of spore dispersal.

Nowadays,food security is a global concern and a great scientific ***-industrial by-products can be used as potential ingredients of innovative food products,contributing to solve this societal ***-products of high specialty oils processing,for instance,have remarkable nutritional and organoleptic ***,the partially delipidified almond flour(pDAF)remaining from almond oil extraction,was used as an alternative ingredient in a highly appreciated almond-based cookie(“almendrados”).For comparison purposes,four different“almendrados”formulations(one industrial,two with pDAF,and one with whole almond flour),were compared regarding nutritional composition,vitamin E and fatty acids *** assess the cookie sensory properties,seventy-four consumers evaluated“appearance”,“taste”,“sweetness”,“crunchiness”,“hardness”,“overall quality”using adequate hedonic *** and protein levels showed significant differences among industrial and the other three *** with pDAF presented similar tocopherols and fatty acids to the traditional(more expensive)formulation,besides reaching the highest scores on“appearance”,“sweetness”,“hardness”,“overall quality”and“buying predisposition”***,the incorporation of pDAF might represent an effective way of adding value to an industrial by-product,while providing a pleasant novel cookie formulation.

Anti-inflammatory effects of Mangifera indica *** in a model of colitis

AIM:To investigate the effect of aqueous extract from Mangifera indica L.(MIE)on dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis in ***:MIE(150 mg/kg)was administered in two different protocols:(1)rectally,over 7 d at the same time as DSS administration;and(2)once daily over 14 d (by oral gavage,7 d before starting DSS,and rectally for 7 d during DSS administration).General observations of clinical signs were ***-inflammatory activity of MIE was assessed by myeloperoxidase(MpO)activity. Colonic lipid peroxidation was determined by measuring the levels of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS).Reduced glutathione(GSH)levels,expression of inflammatory related mediators[inducible isoforms of nitric oxide synthase(iNOS)and cyclooxygenase (COX)-2,respectively]and cytokines[tumor necrosis factor(TNF)-αand TNF receptors 1 and 2]in colonic tissue were also ***(IL)-6 and TNF-α serum levels were also measured. RESULTS:The results demonstrated that MIE has anti-inflammatory properties by improvement of clinical signs,reduction of ulceration and reduced MpO activity when administered before *** addition,administration of MIE for 14 d resulted in an increase in GSH and reduction of TBARS levels and iNOS,COX-2, TNF-αand TNF R-2 expression in colonic tissue,and a decrease in IL-6 and TNF-αserum levels. CONCLUSION:MIE has anti-inflammatory activity in a DSS-induced rat colitis model and preventive administration(prior to DSS)seems to be a more effective protocol.

Green Cycle: Sulfate Sorption from Natural Water on Anionic Clay Compound Obtained from Industry Wastewater

In this paper we are describing a green cycle process. The first step was a novel hydrotalcite-like compound (HTLC) synthesized by a co-precipitating method, under standard ambient temperature and pressure, using chemical industry wastewater rich in divalent and trivalent cations, activated by a thermal treatment and finally characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDS) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The second step was a series of batch sorption tests performed with this activated HTLC and untreated underground sulfurous water from the state of puebla, México. The HTLC calcined at 500°C/3 h exhibited the best sorption ability for ions, demonstrated a decrease of the hardness and sulfate ions to below the regional legal standards for drinking water. Once inactive after being used in water treatment, the sorbed ions were removed by ion exchange in a carbonate-containing solution, resulting in an 80% recycling of the material which upon activation demonstrated a retained capacity for water treatment. This recyclability suggests the exciting possibility of this novel compound as an efficient “green” technology in water treatment processes.

Folate Metabolism Interferes with plant Immunity through 1C Methionine Synthase-Directed Genome-wide DNA Methylation Enhancement

Severe Acute Hepatitis of Unknown Origin in Children: What Do We Know Today?

In May 2022, the UK International Health Regulations National Focal point notified World Health Organization of 176 cases of severe acute hepatitis of unknown etiology in children under 10 years of age. From that moment on, cases of severe acute hepatitis of unknown origin in children began to be reported in several countries. As of June 17, 2022, a total of 991 cases had been reported in 35 countries worldwide, 50 children needed a liver transplant and 28 patients died. According to information published by ECDC, 449 cases have been detected in 21 EU countries. The children were between 1 month and 16 years of age. Adenovirus was detected in 62.2% of the analyzed samples. So far, the cause of these cases is unknown and many hypotheses remain open, but hepatitis A-E viruses and COVID-19 vaccines have been ruled out. A possible hypothesis has been published to explain the cause of these cases of severe hepatitis, according to which it could be a consequence of adenovirus infection in the intestine in healthy children previously infected with SARS-CoV-2. No other clear epidemiological risk factors have been identified to date. Thus, at this time, the etiology of the current cases of hepatitis remains under active investigation.

Adverse effects induced by chromium Ⅵ, cadmium and arsenic exposure on hypothalamus-pituitary physiology

Environmental contamination with some metalloids and heavy metals(M/HM)raises concern due to well known adverse effects on *** these pollutants,chromium VI(Cr VI),cadmium(Cd)and arse-nic(As)are frequently present as a result of natural sources or due to industrial *** are able to easily enter the organism and negatively affect many organs and *** vivo(exposure to Cr VI,Cd or As through drinking water)and in vitro experiments(primary pituitary cell cultures)were performed in male Wistar rats to address their actions on hypothalamus-pituitary *** the M/HM accumulated in hypothalamus and pi-tuitary gland and decreased pituitary cell viability and prolactin release mostly by generation of reactive oxygen species,since it was partially prevented by antioxidant *** the pituitary,they increased lipid peroxy-dation and the expression of several oxidative stress *** death was mainly due to caspase-dependent ***(prolactin-secreting cells)were the most affected pituitary ***-driven cell death was also partially calcium-and ***,Cd stimulated the production of low levels of nitric oxide which exerted cytoprotective *** results showed that these M/HM display deleterious actions in hypothalamic-pituitary physiology by altering hormone release and promoting cell death.
