AIM:To determine the prevalence of restless legs syndrome(RLS)in patients with irritable bowel syndrome(IBS).METHODS:patients with diarrhea-predominant IBS(n=30),constipation-predominant IBS(n=30),or mixed-symptom IBS(n=30)were recruited from the community between March 2008 and February *** 200 mg three times daily was administered empirically to alleviate small intestinal bowel over-growth in all *** presence of RLS was assessed via an RLS questionnaire and ***:Twentysix patients with IBS(29%)were diagnosed with RLS using the RLS ***-four of the 26 patients(92%)underwent polysomnog-raphy,and all had confirmation of RLS.A greater percentage of patients with RLS had diarrhea-predominant IBS(62%)compared with patients with constipation-predominant IBS(4%)or mixed-symptom IBS(33%).CONCLUSION:Restless legs syndrome is prevalent in patients with IBS,especially those with diarrheal *** of concomitant disorders may improve diagnosis and expand relevant treatment options for patients.

Influence of temperature on tunneling-enhanced recombination in Si based p–i–n photodiodes

We investigate the dominant dark current transport mechanism in Si based p-i-n photodiodes, namely, BpW 21R, SFH 205FA and BpX 61 photodiodes in the temperature range of 350 to 139 K. The forward current- voltage characteristics of these photodiodes are explained via the tunneling enhanced recombination model, which gives a quantitative description of the electronic mechanism in the p-i-n junction photodiodes. The observed tem- perature dependence of the saturation current and the diode ideality factor of these devices agree well with theo- retical predictions; the analysis also indicates the importance of doping for enhancement of tunneling. The present study will be helpful in applying the devices at low temperature ambience.

The influence of temperature on the intensity of light emitted by as well as the carrier life time r of a standard A1GaAs based light emitting diode has been investigated in the temperature range from 345 to 136 K. The open-circuit voltage decay （OCVD） technique has been used for measured the carrier lifetime. Our experimental results reveal a 16% average increase in intensity and a 163.482-19.765 ns variation in carrier lifetime in the above temperature range. Further, theoretical and experimental analysis show that for negligible carrier density the intensity is inversely proportional to carrier lifetime for this sample.

The continuous increase of global atmospheric CO_(2) concentrations brutally damages our environment. A series of methods have been developed to convert CO_(2) to valuable fuels and value-added chemicals to maintain the equilibrium of carbon cycles. The electrochemical CO_(2) reduction reaction(CO_(2)RR) is one of the promising methods to produce fuels and chemicals, and it could offer sustainable paths to decrease carbon intensity and support renewable energy. Thus, significant research efforts and highly efficient catalysts are essential for converting CO_(2) into other valuable chemicals and fuels. Transition metal-based single atoms catalysts(TM-SACs) have recently received much attention and offer outstanding electrochemical applications with high activity and selectivity opportunities. By taking advantage of both heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysts, TM-SACs are the new rising star for electrochemical conversion of CO_(2) to the value-added product with high selectivity. In recent years, enormous research effort has been made to synthesize different TM-SACs with different M–Nxsites and study the electrochemical conversion of CO_(2) to CO. This review has discussed the development and characterization of different TMSACs with various catalytic sites, fundamental understanding of the electrochemical process in CO_(2) RR,intrinsic catalytic activity, and molecular strategics of SACs responsible for CO_(2)RR. Furthermore, we extensively review previous studies on 1 st-row transition metals TM-SACs(Ni, Co, Fe, Cu, Zn, Sn) and dual-atom catalysts(DACs) utilized for electrochemical CO_(2) conversions and highlight the opportunities and challenges.

The Himalayas hailed as the‘water towers of the world’feed many perennial rivers which form the lifeline of the Indian *** change induced rising global temperatures and changing rainfall patterns are currently threatening the glaciers that feed the *** combination of these factors is causing water stresses to a part of the world which is usually considered water *** there are some large-scale studies done in the Himalayas,regional analysis of changing rainfall patterns and their impacts on vegetation and agriculture is *** we focus on the Indian state of Sikkim located in the Eastern Himalayas to evaluate these issues using mixed *** use satellite data from pERSIANN and MODIS to characterise the regional rainfall,vegetation,and surface temperature trends between 2001 and *** the analysis shows overall declining rainfall trends across most land cover classes,the trends in temperature are mostly positive for the period of study,with winter Land Surface Temperature(LST)values showing the largest area with marginally significant(ppositive *** contrast,such patterns are not observed for ***,the interviews corroborate that even agriculture is impacted,implying that the trends continue at finer spatial scales *** lack of government support for adaptation and mitigation is also lamented placing the communities at a precarious position to continuing climate change.

Though in last four decades various alternate energy sources have come into the limelight, the hyperbolic use of coal as a prime energy source cannot be counterbalanced. Disposal of high amount of fly-ash from thermal power plants absorbs huge amount of water, energy and land area by ash ponds. In order to meet the growing energy demand, various environmental, economic and social problems associated with the disposal of fly-ash would continue to increase. Therefore, fly-ash management would remain a great concern of the century. Fly-ash has great potentiality in agriculture due to its efficacy in modification of soil health and crop performance. The high concentration of elements (K, Na, Zn, Ca, Mg and Fe) in fly-ash increases the yield of many agricultural crops. But compared to other sectors, the use of fly-ash in agriculture is limited. An exhaustive review of numerous studies of last four decades took place in this paper, which systematically covers the importance, scope and apprehension regarding utilization of fly-ash in agriculture. The authors concluded that though studies have established some solutions to handle the problems of radioactivity and heavy metal content in fly-ash, long-term confirmatory research and demonstration are necessary. This paper also identified some areas, like proper handling of dry ash in plants as well as in fields, ash pond management (i.e., faster decantation, recycling of water, vertical expansion rather than horizontal), monitoring of soil health, crop quality, and fate of fly-ash in time domain, where research thrust is required. Agricultural lime application contributes to global warming as Intergovernmental panel on Climate Change (IpCC) assumes that all the carbon in agricultural lime is finally released as CO2 to the atmosphere. It is expected that use of fly-ash instead of lime in agriculture can reduce net CO2 emission, thus reduce global warming also.

In recent years, seasonal blooms of the dinoflagellate Noctiluca miliaris have appeared in the open-waters of the northern Arabian Sea （NAS）. This study provides the first characterization of bacteria from a seasonal bloom of green Noctiluca ofNAS （20°N-17°N and 64°E-70°E）, during the spring-inter-monsoon cruise ofSagar Sampada 253, in March 2007. Bacterial growth as assessed by most-probable number （MpN） and plate counts, revealed ＇variable-physiotypes＇ over a wide range of salinities （0%-25% w/v NaC1）, pH levels （5-8.5）, and organic nutrient strengths, in comparison to non-bloom waters. MpN indices of bacteria in surface waters of bloom stations ＊DWK and ＊pRB, corresponded to （3.08-4.41）×103 cells/mL at 3.5% NaC1 （w/v）, and （2.82-9.49）× 102 cells/mL at 25% （w/v） NaC1 in tryptone-yeast extract broth （TYE）. plate counts were （1.12-4） × 106 CFU/mL at 0% （w/v） NaC1, （1.28-3.9） × 106 CFU/mL at 3.5% （w/v） NaC1, and （0.4- 7）×104 CFU/mL at 25% NaC1 （w/v） on TYE. One-tenth-strength Zobell＇s gave （0.6-3.74）× 105 CFU/mL at pH 5 to （3.58-7.5）× 105 CFU/mL at pH 8.5. These bacteria were identified to the genera Bacillus, Cellulomonas, Staphylococcus, planococcus, Dietzia, Diergibacillus, Micrococcus, Sporosarcinae, Leucobacter, and Halomonas. The identity of three strains （GUFBSS253N2, GUFBSS253N30, and GUFBSS253N84） was confirmed through 16S rDNA sequence homology as Bacillus cohnii, Bacillusflexus, and Bacillus cereus. The -2-3-fold higher plate counts of culturable bacteria from the open-waters of the NAS indicate that these bacteria could critically determine the biogeochemical dynamics of the bloom and its milieu. The role of these bacteria in sustaining/terminating the bloom is under evaluation.

Application of fractal theory in assessing soil aggregates in Indian tropical ecosystems

Soil aggregation varies according to climatic and manage- ment factors, and is difficult to measure because of irregular shapes and sizes of soil aggregates. We applied fractal theory to assess soil aggrega- tion as affected by （1） land use change from forest to savanna, （2） nutri- ent additions in forest, ecotone, and savanna ecosystems, and （3） tillage practice and residue treatments in an agro-ecosystem. We used fractal dimensions nonlinear （D,o,-lin） and linear （Dlin） based on number of ag- gregates （N） and mass of aggregates （M）（the range of values were 2.6-2.89 and 2.694.41, respectively） to capture the variations in the sizes of soil aggregates due to land use and treatments/management in these ecosystems. The variation in the values of non-linear fractal dimension based on mass （DMnon-lin） was smaller in forest and savanna ecosystems with and without nutrient additions, while the variation was wider in agro-ecosystems with different management practices. Linear fractal dimensions based on number （Dr^i,） and mass （DMlin） of aggregates var- ied marginally in these ecosystems and did not capture the variations in soil aggregates well. The variations in non-linear fractal dimension indi- cate that continued nitrogen loading in forest accelerates the formation of macro-aggregates, whereas in savanna the situation was reversed. The values of non-linear fractal dimensions did not show significant change after 6 years of nutrient additions in the ecotone; reflecting a buffering mechanism of this system in soil aggregate formation. On the basis of non-linear fractal dimension values, we conclude that residue retention and minimum tillage are appropriate for proper maintenance of soil ag- gregate stability for sustained crop production in the Indian dry land agro-ecosystems
