Rapid development of pharmaceuticals outpaces the efforts to regulate and monitor their trace concentrations in the *** emerging issue can only be solved through field studies,solid fate and transport models,and adequate risk assessment of the concerned *** approach requires the availability of toxicological information about the contaminants along with an understanding of their full potential in different media of the *** review paper focuses on commonly used seven pharmaceutical families across the globe:antacids,antibiotics,antidepressants,antiepileptics,beta blockers,lipid lowering drugs,and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory *** each family,pharmaceuticals which are widely prescribed,studied,and frequently detected in environment were *** concentration levels in the environment,updated physicochemical properties,main natural removal mechanism,and ecological risk assessment towards the receptors of those pharmaceuticals in aquatic and terrestrial systems were *** following results were observed in the literature:1)removal of the pharmaceuticals from wastewater treatment plants is reduced when the dissolved organic matter present;2)many studies have cited older physicochemical properties of the concerned pharmaceuticals assuming relative conditions in their studies which can affect the accuracy of a model;3)the number of studies are very limited for fate and transport in the soil;and 4)there is lack of cumulative risk assessment of mixed pharmaceutical ***,this review will provide modeler with updated physiochemical properties;it will guide researchers to focus on removal of those contaminants at different lifecycle stages;and it will provide guidance to policy makers to develop effective policies and regulations.

A simple sensitive and economical method for the determination of labetalol hydrochloride has been proposed, based on the reaction of labetalol with sodium nitroprusside and hydroxylamine hydrochloride in sodium dihydrogen phosphate-sodium hydroxide buffer solution of pH 12. The green-blue color produced due to the formation of a nitroso derivative has been measured at 695 nm. The Beer＇s range was obeyed in the concentration range of 2-51 μg·mL^-1 with molar absorptivity of 0.48 × 10^4 L·mol^-1·cm^-1. Rigorous statistical analyses were performed for the validation of the method. A detailed investigation of the selectivity of the method has been done to find it to be highly selective for the determination of labetalol hydrochloride in the presence of its acidic degradation product and common excipients of formulations. The proposed method was successfully applied to the determination of labetalol hydrochloride in the laboratory prepared dosage forms. Comparison of the means of the proposed procedure with a reference method using point as well as interval hypotheses showed no statistically significant difference. The developed method was extended to investigate its applicability to biological samples.

AIMTo determine the impact of rigid gas permeable (RGP) and silicone-hydrogel keratoconus lenses on the quality of life (QoL) in keratoconus (KCN) patients using the self-reported results from the Contact Lens Impact on Quality of Life (CLIQ) *** January 2013 to April 2013, 27 consecutive KCN patients who wore RGP contact lenses (conflexair100 UV KE Zeiss-Wöhlk) or soft silicone-hydrogel contact lenses (SHCLs) for KCN (KeraSoft IC- Bausch&Lomb or Hydrocone Toris K-Swiss lens) completed the CLIQ *** mean age of 27 patients was 29.6±8.0y. Fifteen patients were RGP user. The groups were comparable with respect to the mean patient age, sex, and mean K values (P=0.1, P=0.8 and P=0.1, respectively). The mean CLIQperson measure was 42.8±5.5 in RGP group and 39.6±5.5 in SHCLs for KCN group (P=0.06). CLIQperson measure was positively correlated with steep K value (r=0.301, P=0.04). When eyes were stratified by visual acuity with contact lenses, the mean CLIQperson measure was 42.01±5.6 in eyes with a visual acuity of 20/20-20/25 (n=44) and 38.4±5.26 in eyes with a visual acuity of 20/32 or less (n=10; P=0.097).CONCLUSIONRGP lenses and SHCLs for KCN have similar impact on QoL.

Objective:To evaluate the psychosocial impact among mothers with perinatal loss and its contributing ***:A cross sectional study was conducted in University Kebangsaan Malaysia Medical Centre (UKMMC) from April 2008 to May 2009 using Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) and self administered ***:Sixty-two respondents were included and most of them were working mothers (77.4%).The mean age of the respondents was (31.0±5.6) years and a majority of the subjects aged between 20-34 years (77.4%).According to the EPDS score,53.2% of the respondents had a psychosocial impact with a total score of >9,out of *** was a significant relationship between psychosocial impact after perinatal loss and support from friends (P=0.019).However,there were no significant differences between psychosocial impact and history of previous perinatal loss,ethnicity,occupation,educational level,age or total ***:Mothers with perinatal loss should be screened for psychosocial impact and offered support when *** and friends should continue to provide emotional *** who have experienced similar problem before will be able to provide better support than those who have not.

Digitally reinforced hematoxylin-eosin polarization technique in diagnosis of rectal amyloidosis

AIM:To investigate the efficacy of the digitally reinforced hematoxylin-eosin polarization(DRHEP)technique for detection of amyloidosis in rectal ***:One hundred hematoxylin-eosin(HE)stained rectal biopsies with Congo-red(CR)-positive amyloid depositions and 50 control cases with CRnegative amyloid-mimicking areas were scanned blinded to the CR results for amyloid depositions under both bright and polarized light,and digitally photographed using the DRHEP technique,to accentuate the faint birefringence observed in HE slides under *** results of DRHEP and HE evaluation were statistically correlated with CR polarization results with respect to presence and localization of amyloid deposits as well as amyloid ***:Amyloid deposits showed yellowish-green birefringence by DRHEP,which allowed identification of amyloidosis in 41 HE-unsuspected cases(P=0.016),31 of which only had vascular *** positivity was higher,and false negativity and positivity were lower by DRHEP,compared to evaluation by HE(69%,31%,and 0.8%vs 33%,67%,and 33%,respectively;P<0.0001).The sensitivity,specificity,accuracy,and positive and negative predictive values for DRHEP were69%,98%,78.6%,98.5%,and 61.25%,*** for DRHEP false negativity were presence of extensive background birefringence in 12 cases,absence of CR birefringent vessel in 3 cases,and missing of the tiny deposits in 9 cases,which could be improved by experience,especially in the latter *** correlation was found between age,gender,sites of deposits,or amyloid ***:The DRHEP technique improves diagnostic accuracy when used as an adjunct or a prior step to CR staining,especially for cases with limited tissues for further analysis.

Voltage gated calcium channel(VGCC) antibodies are generally associated with Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome. However the presence of this antibody has been associated with paraneoplastic as well as nonparaneoplastic cerebellar degeneration. Most patients with VGCC-antibody-positivity have small cell lung cancer(SCLC). Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome(LEMS)is an autoimmune disease of the presynaptic part of the neuromuscular junction. Its classical clinical triadis proximal muscle weakness, areflexia and autonomic dysfunction. Fifty to sixty percent of LEMS patients have a neoplasia, usually SCLC. The co-occurrence of SCLC and LEMS causes more severe and progressive disease and shorter survival than non-paraneoplastic LEMS. Treatment includes 3,4 diaminopyridine for symptomatic purposes and immunotherapy with prednisolone, azathioprine or intravenous immunoglobulin in patients unresponsive to 3,4 diaminopyridine. Paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration(PCD) is a syndrome characterized with severe, subacute pancerebellar dysfunction. Serum is positive for VGCC antibody in 41%-44% of patients, usually with the co-occurrence of SCLC. Clinical and electrophysiological features of LEMS are also present in 20%-40% of these patients. Unfortunately, PCD symptoms do not improve with immunotherapy. The role of VGCC antibody in the immunopathogenesis of LEMS is well known whereas its role in PCD is still unclear. All patients presenting with LEMS or PCD must be investigated for SCLC.

AIM:To compare bacterial biofilm colonization in lacrimal stents following external dacryocystorhinostomy(EX-DCR),endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy(EN-DCR),and transcanalicular dacryocystorhinostomy(TC-DCR)with multidiode ***:This prospective study included 30consecutive patients with nasolacrimal duct obstruction who underwent EXT-,EN-,or *** removed lacrimal stent fragments and conjunctival samples were *** lacrimal stent biofilms were examined by scanning electron microscopy(SEM).RESULTS:Eleven(36.7%)of the 30 lacrimal stent cultures were positive for aerobic bacteria(most commonly Staphylococcus epidermidis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa).However anaerobic bacteria and fungi were not identified in the lacrimal stent ***-seven(90%)patients had biofilmpositive lacrimal *** conjunctival culture positivity after the DCR,biofilm positivity on stents,the grade of biofilm colonization,and the presence of mucus and coccoid and rod-shaped organisms did not significantly differ between any of the groups(P>0.05).However,a significant difference was found when the SEM results were compared to the results of the lacrimal stent and conjunctival cultures(P<0.001).CONCLUSION:Type of dacryocystorhinostomy(DCR)surgery did not affect the biofilm colonization of the lacrimal *** also appears to be more precise than microbiological culture for evaluating the presence of biofilms on lacrimal stents.

Recently, drones have found applicability in a variety of study fields, one of these being forestry, where an increasing interest is given to this segment of technology, especially due to the high-resolution data that can be collected flexibly in a short time and at a relatively low price. Also, drones have an important role in filling the gaps of common data collected using manned aircraft or satellite remote sensing, while having many advantages both in research and in various practical applications particularly in forestry as well as in land use in general. This paper aims to briefly describe the different approaches of applications of UAVs （Unmanned Aircraft Vehicles） in forestry, such as forest mapping, forest management planning, canopy height model creation or mapping forest gaps. These approaches have great potential in the near future applications and their quick implementation in a variety of situations is desirable for the sustainable management of forests.

Spermatozoa protein alterations in infertile men with bilateral varicocele

Among infertile men, a diagnosis of unilateral varicocele is made in 90% of varicocele cases and bilateral in the remaining varicocele cases. However, there are reports of under-diagnosis of bilateral varicocele among infertile men and that its prevalence is greater than 10%. In this prospective study, we aimed to examine the differentially expressed proteins （DEP） extracted from spermatozoa cells of patients with bilateral varicocele and fertile donors. Subjects consisted of 17 men diagnosed with bilateral varicocele and 10 proven fertile men as healthy controls. Using the LTQ-orbitrap elite hybrid mass spectrometry system, proteomic analysis was done on pooled samples from 3 patients with bilateral varicocele and 5 fertile men. From these samples, 73 DEP were identified of which 58 proteins were differentially expressed, with 7 proteins unique to the bilateral varicocele group and 8 proteins to the fertile control group. Majority of the DEPs were observed to be associated with metabolic processes, stress responses, oxidoreductase activity, enzyme regulation, and immune system processes. Seven DEP were involved in sperm function such as capacitation, motility, and sperm-zona binding. Proteins TEKT3 and TCP11 were validated by Western blot analysis and may serve as potential biomarkers for bilateral varicocele. In this study, we have demonstrated for the first time the presence of DEP and identified proteins with distinct reproductive functions which are altered in infertile men with bilateral varicocele. Functional proteomic profiling provides insight into the mechanistic implications of bilateral varicocele-associated male infertility.
