A systematic study has been carried out on the effects of interface bonding on the strain mediated magnetoelectric （ME） coupling in ferromagnetic-ferroelectric bilayers. The technique used involves the static electric field E tuning of the ferromagnetic resonance （FMR） in yttrium iron garnet （YIG） and lead zirconate titanate （PZT） or lead magnesium niobate-lead titanate （PMN-PT）. A broad band detection technique has been developed for studies over 1 40 GHz in three types of bilayers： epoxy bonded, eutectic bonded and YIG films directly grown onto piezoelectric substrate by electrophoretic deposition. The strength A of the converse ME effect （CME） defined as the ratio of the frequency shift 8f in FMR in E, A = 8f/E, varies over the range 0.8 to 4.3 ***/kV, and is the highest for eutectic bonded samples and is the weakest for epoxy bonded bilayers. The results presented here as of importance for dual electric and magnetic field tunable ferrite ferroelectric microwave resonators and filters.

A cascaded system of electrical discharges (non-thermal plasma) andadsorption process was investigated for the removal of oxides of Nitrogen (NO_x) and totalhydrocarbons (THC) from an actual diesel engine exhaust. The non-thermal plasma and adsorptionprocesses were separately studied first and then the cascaded process was studied. In this study,different types of adsorbents were used. The NO_x removal efficiency was higher withplasma-associated adsorption (cascaded) process compared to the individual processes and the removalefficiency was found almost invariant in time. When associated by plasma, among the adsorbentsstudied, activated charcoal and MS-13X were more effective for NO_x and THC removal *** experiments were conducted at no load and at 50 % load conditions. The plasma reactor was keptat room temperature throughout the experiment, while the temperature of the adsorbent reactor wasvaried. A relative comparison of adsorbents was discussed at the end.

This paper reports improved performance of discharge plasma in raw engine exhaust treatment. For the purpose of investigation, both filtered and raw diesel engine exhaust were separately treated by the discharge plasma. In raw exhaust environment, the discharge plasma exhibits a superior performance with regard to NOx removal, energy consmnption and formation of by-products. In this study, experiments were conducted at conditions of different temperatures and loads.

A cascaded system of electrical discharges (Non-thermal plasma), catalyst andadsorption process was investigated for the removal of oxides of nitrogen (NO_x) and carbonmonoxide (CO) from a Diesel engine raw exhaust. The three processes were separately studied first,and then the cascaded processes, namely plasma-catalyst and plasma-adsorbent, were investigated. Inthis paper main emphasis was laid on the effect of carbonaceous soot oxidation on the plasmatreatment process. While the cascaded plasma-catalyst process exhibits a higher CO removal, thecascaded plasma-adsorbent process exhibits a higher NO_x removal. The experiments were conductedunder no-load. The plasma and adsorbent reactors were kept at room temperature throughout theexperiment while the catalyst reactor was kept at 200℃ / 300℃.

Nano sized La0.4F3：Ce0.45,Tb0.15（core）, La0.4F3：Ce0.45,Tb0.15（Ti O2）（core） shell, La0.55F：Ce0.45, and La0.85F3：Tb0.15 particles were synthesized by adopting co-precipitation technique in acidic environment and coated with Ti O2 to form a core-shell structure by adopting a mechanical dispersion method at room temperature. The synthesized materials were characterized using X-ray diffraction（XRD）, transmission electron microscopy（TEM）, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy（FTIR）, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy（UV-Vis） absorption, photoluminescence and lifetime spectroscopy. The crystal structure of La0.4F3：Ce0.45,Tb0.15 remained the same as La F3 after being doped with Ce and Tb ions but with a slight decrease in the lattice parameter. TEM image confirmed the formation of a core-shell structure. The La0.4F3：Ce0.45,Tb0.15/Ti O2 exhibited Tb3＋ fluorescence enhancement by a factor of 1.76. Scintillation from the synthesized materials was also observed under X-ray excitation.

Problems due to the taste and odor in drinking water are common in treatment facilities around the world. Taste and odor are perceived by the public as the primary indicators of the safely and acceptability of drinking water and are mainly caused by the presence of two semi-volatile compounds - 2-methyl isobomeol （MIb） and geosmin. A review of these two taste and odor causing compounds in drinking water is presented. The sources for the formation of these compounds in water are discussed alongwith the health and regulatory implications. The recent developments in the analysis of MIb/geosmin in water which have allowed for rapid measurements in the nanogram per liter concentrations are also discussed. This review focuses on the relevant treatment alternatives, that are described in detail with emphasis on their respective advantages and problems associated with their implementation in a full- scale facility. Conventional treatment processes in water treatment plants, such as coagulation, sedimentation and chlorination have been found to be ineffective for removal of M1b/geosmin. Studies have shown powdered activated carbon, ozonation and biofiltration to be effective in treatment of these two compounds. Although some of these technologies are more effective and show more promise than the others, much work remains to be done to optimize these technologies so that they can be retrofitted or installed with minimal impact on the overall operation and effectiveness of the treatment system.

This study was aimed at developing a protocol for increasing the number of generation cycles per year in chickpea(Cicer arietinum L.).Six accessions,two each from early(JG 11 and JG 14),medium(ICCV 10 and JG 16),and late(CDC-Frontier and C 235)maturity groups,were *** experiment was conducted for two years under glasshouse *** photoperiod was extended to induce early flowering and immature seeds were germinated to further reduce generation cycle *** to control,artificial light caused a reduction in flowering time by respectively 8–19,7–16,and 11–27 days in early-,medium-,and late-maturing *** earliest stage of immature seed able to germinate was 20–23 days after anthesis in accessions of different maturity *** time period between germination and the earliest stage of immature seed suitable for germination was considered one generation cycle and spanned respectively 43–60,44–64,and 52–79 days in early-,medium-,and late-maturing ***,the late-maturing accession CDCFrontier could not be advanced further after three generation cycles owing to the strong influence of photoperiod and *** mean total number of generations produced per year were respectively 7,6.2,and 6 in early-,medium-,and late-maturing *** results have encouraging implications for breeding programs:rapid progression toward homozygosity,development of mapping populations,and reduction in time,space and resources in cultivar development(speed breeding).

Objective:To investigate the cardioprotective effect of beta-glucan against isoproterenol-induced cardiotoxicity in rats,and elucidate the underlying ***:Rats were orally pretreated with beta-glucan(40 mg/kg body weight)for 30 d,and isoproterenol(20 mg/100 g body weight)was administered on days 31 and *** effects of beta-glucan on markers of cardiac injury,hemodynamic changes,production of proinflammatory cytokines,and the corresponding mRNA expressions were *** addition,histological analysis was ***:Pretreatment with beta-glucan prevented isoproterenol-induced cardiac injury by preserving the structural and functional integrity of the plasma membrane and attenuating the production of proinflammatory cytokines(NF-κb,TNF-α,IL-6,IL-1β,and IFN-γ)in the ***,beta-glucan significantly downregulated the mRNA expression of ACE,AT1R,TNF-α,IL-6,NF-κb,caspase-3,TLR-4,and bax,and upregulated bcl-2 in the *** the same time,pretreatment with beta-glucan alleviated myocardial damage as reflected in a reduction in myonecrosis,edema,and erythrocyte extravasation with almost imperceptible ***:beta-glucan can protect against isoproterenol-induced cardiotoxicity by attenuating cardiac inflammation and apoptosis and regulating the ACE-AT1R axis,thereby preventing cardiac remodeling.
