Long-term monitoring of cycles in Clethrionomys rutilus in the Yukon boreal forest

baseline studies of small rodent populations in undisturbed ecosystems are *** report here 50 years of mon-itoring and experimentation in Yukon of a dominant rodent species in the North American boreal forest,the red-backed vole Clethrionomys *** voles breed in summer,weigh 20–25 g,and reach a maximum density of 20 to 25 per *** populations have shown consistent 3–4-year cycles for the last 50 years with the only change being that peak densities averaged 8/ha until 2000 and 18/ha since that *** the last 25 years,we have measured food resources,predator numbers,and winter weather,and for 1-year social interactions,to estimate their contribution to changes in the rate of summer increase and the rate of overwinter *** these potential limiting factors could contribute to changes in density,and we measured their relative contributions statistically with multiple *** rate of winter decline in density was related to both food supply and winter *** rate of summer increase was related to summer berry crops and white spruce cone *** measure of predator numbers was related to winter or summer changes in vole *** was a large signal of climate change effects in these *** is no density dependence in summer population growth and only a weak one in winter population *** of our results provide a clear understanding of what generates 3–4-year cycles in these voles,and the major missing piece may be an understanding of social interactions at high density.

Analytical and finite-element study of optimal strain distribution in various beam shapes for energy harvesting applications

Owing to the increasing demand for harvesting energy from environmental vibration for use in self-powered electronic applications, cantilever-based vibration energy harvesting has attracted considerable interest from various parties and has become one of the most common approaches to converting redundant mechanical energy into electrical energy. As the output voltage produced from a piezoelectric material depends largely on the geometric shape and the size of the beam, there is a need to model and compare the performance of cantilever beams of differing *** paper presents the study of strain distribution in various shapes of cantilever beams, including a convex and concave edge profile elliptical beam that have not yet been discussed in any prior literature. both analytical and finite-element models are derived and the resultant strain distributions in the beam are computed based on a MATLAb solver and ANSYS finite-element analysis tools. An optimum geometry for a vibration-based energy harvesting system is ***, experimental results comparing the power density for triangular and rectangular piezoelectric beams are also presented to validate the findings of the study, and the claim, as suggested in the literature, is verified.

The scientific and technical history of polymerization can be divided into three periods, which will be illustratedfor emulsion polymerization. The first period was when emulsion polymers were originally produced, and was developed asan attempt to copy natural rubber latex. Indeed, the natural process is quite different from the synthetic process of emulsionpolymerization, which in fact does not even need an emulsion to be present: the term is a misnomer! The results werefunctional but limited. In the second period, the first theories appeared, and a huge range of products was madefor surface coatings, adhesives, commodity polymers such as SbR, neoprene, etc. The work of the outstanding pioneers wasbased on limited types of experimental data, and some suppositions are now seen to be incorrect. Nevertheless, manyexcellent products were made and have evolved to many materials currently in everyday use. The third period of emulsionpolymerization is now dawning. The scientific efforts of many teams over previous decades, aided by the advent of newphysical techniques for investigation, have resulted in better understanding of the fundamentals of emulsion *** examples from the author's group involve creating novel materials using controlled seeded emulsion polymerizationfrom natural rubber latex and other polyenes. Latex topology and controlled free-radical chemistry can be combined toproduce a) a comb polymer with hydrophobic backbone and hydrophilic 'teeth', or b) with sufficient in situ compatibilizerbetween two otherwise incompatible polymers to yield a spatially uniform material down to the nanostructure level, and c) toproduce controlled nanostructures.

Punch‑excised explants of bovine mammary gland to model early immune response to infection

background Mammary gland(MG)infections(mastitis)are frequent diseases of dairy cows that affect milk quality,animal welfare and farming *** infections are commonly associated with the bacteria Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus *** in vitro models have been used to investigate the early response of the MG to bacteria,but the role of the teat in mastitis pathogenesis has received less *** this study,we used punch-excised teat tissue as an ex vivo model to study the immune mechanisms that arise early during infection when bacteria have entered the *** Cytotoxicity and microscopic analyses showed that bovine teat sinus explants have their morphology and viability preserved after 24 h of culture and respond to ex vivo stimulation with TLR-agonists and *** and *** trigger stronger inflammatory response in teat when compared to LTA and ***,leading to a higher produc-tion of IL-6 and IL-8,as well as to an up-regulation of proinflammatory *** also demonstrated that our ex vivo model can be applied to frozen-stored *** In compliance with the 3Rs principle(replacement,reduction and refinement)in animal experimenta-tion,ex vivo explant analyses proved to be a simple and affordable approach to study MG immune response to *** model,which better reproduces organ complexity than epithelial cell cultures or tissue slices,lends itself particularly well to studying the early phases of the MG immune response to infection.

Creation and judicious application of a wheat resistance gene atlas

Disease-resistance(R)gene cloning in wheat(Triticum aestivum)has been accelerated by the recent surge of genomic resources,facilitated by advances in sequencing technologies and ***,with the challenges of population growth and climate change,it is vital not only to clone and functionally characterize a few handfuls of R genes,but also to do so at a scale that would facilitate the breeding and deployment of crops that can recognize the wide range of pathogen effectors that threaten *** populations are continually changing,and breeders must have tools and resources available to rapidly respond to those changes if we are to safeguard our daily *** meet this challenge,we propose the creation of a wheat R-gene atlas by an international community of researchers and *** atlas would consist of an online directory from which sources of resistance could be identified and deployed to achieve more durable resistance to the major wheat pathogens,such as wheat rusts,blotch diseases,powdery mildew,and wheat *** present a costed proposal detailing how the inter-acting molecular components governing disease resistance could be captured from both the host and the pathogen through biparental mapping,mutational genomics,and whole-genome association *** explore options for the configuration and genotyping of diversity panels of hexaploid and tetraploid wheat,as well as their wild relatives and major pathogens,and discuss how the atlas could inform a dynamic,durable approach to R-gene *** against the current magnitude of wheat yield losses worldwide,recently estimated at 21%,this endeavor presents one route for bringing R genes from the lab to the field at a considerable speed and quantity.

Accuracy of common stem volume formulae using terrestrial photogrammetric point clouds:a case study with savanna trees in benin

Recent applications of digital photogrammetry in forestry have highlighted its utility as a viable mensuration ***,in tropical regions little research has been done on the accuracy of this approach for stem volume *** this study,the performance of Structure from Motion photogrammetry for estimating individual tree stem volume in relation to traditional approaches was *** selected 30 trees from five savanna species growing at the periphery of the W National Park in northern benin and measured their circumferences at different heights using traditional tape and *** volumes of sample trees were estimated from the measured circumferences using nine volumetric formulae for solids of revolution,including cylinder,cone,paraboloid,neiloid and their respective *** tree was photographed and stem volume determined using a taper function derived from tri-dimensional stem *** reference volume was compared with the results of formulaic *** stem profiles were further decomposed into different portions,approximately corresponding to the stump,butt logs and logs,and the suitability of each solid of revolution was assessed for simulating the resulting *** volumes calculated using the fustrums of paraboloid and neiloid formulae were the closest to reference volumes with a bias and root mean square error of 8.0%and 24.4%,*** closely resembled fustrums of a paraboloid and a *** stem portions assumed different solids as follows:fustrums of paraboloid and neiloid were more prevalent from the stump to breast height,while a paraboloid closely matched stem shapes beyond this ***,a more accurate stem volumetric estimate was attained when stems were considered as a composite of at least three geometric solids.
