Predictors of long term survival after hepatic resection for hilar cholangiocarcinoma:A retrospective study of 5-year survivors

AIM:To determine predictors of long term survival after resection of hilar cholangiocarcinoma(HC) by comparing patients surviving > 5 years with those who survived 5 ***:There were 34(14%) long term survivors(5 year survivors) among the 243 *** survivors were younger at diagnosis than those surviving less than 5 years(mean age,50.47 ± 4.45 vs 54.59 ± 4.98,p = 0.001).Gender,clinical presentation,preoperative drainage,preoperative serum bilirubin,albumin and serum glutamic-pyruvic transaminase were similar between the two *** level of CA 19-9 was significantly higher in patients surviving 5 year,includingyoung age(p = 0.001),serum CA19-9(p = 0.0001),non-cirrhotic liver(p = 0.02),major hepatic resection(p = 0.001),caudate lobe resection(p = 0.006),well differentiated tumour(p = 0.03),lymph node status(0.008),R0 resection margin(p = 0.0001) and early postoperative liver cell failure(p = 0.02).CONCLUSION:Liver status,resection of caudate lobe,lymph node status,R0 resection and CA19-9 were demonstrated to be independent risk factors for long term survival.

The causal agent of red stripe, Acidovorax avenae subsp. avenae(Aaa), can incite significant economic losses during sugarcane production. Proteomics is a useful tool for the comprehensive identification of defense response proteins in plants. In this study, we used analysis of iTRAQ-based proteomics to identify proteins that were produced in sugarcane in defense to Aaa in two Saccharum spp. cultivars: one was resistant(ROC22) and the other one(MT11-610) was susceptible to red stripe. Defense response was evaluated at 0 h(mock-inoculation) and 24 h post-inoculation with the bacterial pathogen, and 10,502 high-confidence proteins and 2,889 differentially expressed proteins(DEPs) were identified. These DEPs included 1,027 proteins(671 upregulated, 354 downregulated) in ROC22 and 1,130 proteins(566 upregulated, 564 downregulated) in MT11-610. Gene ontology analysis revealed that most DEPs were clustered in the metabolic, single-organism metabolic, and oxidation-reduction processes, and in catalytic activity. In a KEGG analysis, these proteins belonged to common pathway such as metabolic pathways, secondary metabolite biosynthesis, and biosynthesis of phenylpropanoids. Thirty-six DEPs were identified, especially epoxide hydrolase 1, dynamin-related protein 1 C-like, cytochrome oxidase subunit I, FK506-binding protein, acetoacetyl CoA thiolase isoform 2, anthocyanidin 3-o-glucosyltransferase, ubiquitin carboxyl-terminal hydrolase 4, protein disulfide isomerase-like protein, and jumonji-like transcription factor family protein. These proteins were characterized by enhanced expression with ≥ 1.5-fold increases in resistant ROC22 versus susceptible MT11-610, and are therefore biomarker candidates in the sugarcane response against Aaa. These data could be very useful in molecular breeding for sugarcane resistance to red stripe.

Background:Following recent findings from our group that curcumin preconditioning augments the therapeutic efficacy of adipose-derived stem cells in the healing of diabetic wounds in rats,we aimed to investigate the regenerative effects of curcumin preconditioned adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells(ASCs)for better recovery of acid inflicted burns in this ***:ASCs were preconditioned with 5μM curcumin for 24 hours and assessed for proliferation,migration,paracrine release potential and gene expression comparative to naive ***,the healing capacity of curcumin preconditioned ASCs(Cur-ASCs)versus naive ASCs was examined using acidic wounds in *** this,acid inflicted burns of 20 mm in diameter were made on the back of male Wistar ***,2×10^(6) cells of Cur-ASCs and naive ASCs were intradermally injected in the wound periphery(n=6)for comparison with an untreated saline ***-transplantation,wounds were macroscopically analysed and photographed to evaluate the percentage of wound closure and period of *** wound biopsies were excised and used for histological evaluation and expression analysis of wound healing markers at molecular level by quantitative PCR and western ***:We found that Cur-ASCs exhibited greater proliferation,migration and paracrine potential in ***,Cur-ASCs showed more effective recovery than naive ASCs as exhibited by gross morphology,faster wound closure and earlier ***’s trichrome and hematoxylin and eosin staining demonstrated the improved architecture of the healing burns,as evidenced by reduced infiltration of inflammatory cells,compact collagen and marked granulation in Cur-ASC treated *** these findings,molecular assessment showed significantly reduced expressions of pro-inflammatory factors(interleukin-1 beta,interleukin-6,tumor necrosis factor alpha)a with striking upsurge of an oxidative marker(superoxide dismutase 1),p

One of the main reasons behind reduced cane yield is pathetic method of planting. Planting method and row spacing are the most important yield contributing factors in sugarcane. A field experiment was carried out in order to determine quality and yield of sugarcane in various spatial arrangements. Treatments are 180 cm spaced trenches with triple row strips;180 cm spaced trenches with alternate row strips;120 cm spaced trenches with double row strips and 60 cm spaced furrow with single row. Perusal of data revealed that 3.6%, 13.4%, 15%, 15.3% more cane diameter (cm), cane length (cm), stripped cane yield (t·haˉ1), sugar yield (t·haˉ1) were obtained from 180 cm spaced trenches with triple row strips as compared to conventional planting method i.e. 60 cm spaced furrows. While the number of millable canes mˉ2, polarity %, cane juice purity %, cane juice %, commercial cane sugar % and cane sugar recovery % remained non-significant by different planting techniques.

Nutrient application systems are designed to apply a relatively uniform amount of a fertilizer to agricultural fields. However, considerable variation in soil texture and other characteristics often occurs within and across production fields, which could have a major impact on fertilizer management strategies. Therefore, uniform application of a fertilizer over the entire field can be both costly and environmentally unsound. Due to their rugged and fool-proof design, crankshaft type piston pumps are widely used in agriculture. The on-the-go outlet flow of these pumps can only be varied by changing the drive shaft speed for each pump stroke setting. But only a limited range of flow rates can be achieved by changing the drive shaft speed. There is a need for an electronic controller, which can adjust the pump stroke on-the-go, for real-time, variable-rate application of crop nutrients. The Clemson “Electro-me-chanical controller for adjusting pump stroke on-the-go” was designed to replace the current manual stroke adjustment system on positive displacement piston pumps. This affordable system can be retrofitted on most John Blue - piston pumps for real-time adjustment of the pump stroke and can be controlled using pre-described position sequences (map-based) or real-time sensor commands (such as optical, pressure, and flow sensors) combined with fertilizer calculation algorithms. In addition, it can adjust pump stroke manually, using an eclectic dial from the tractor’s cab.

对石油产品的需求持续增长，但世界石油产量却一直下降。然而，技术的进步和世界石油价格的上涨弓l发了对巨量残余石油开采的热潮。因此随着石油勘探的持续进步，如果要避免石油的短缺，那么将要加大未知储量的勘探开发。微生物提高石油采收率（MEOR）技术是一项能有效提高石油采收率的方法之一。MEOR技术具有成为最好地适应目前石油市场经济约束的可靠技术之一的潜力。如果MEOR技术在经济价值和环境影响方面取得良好的结果，那么其将会取代其它提高石油采收率技术。本文综述了MEOR技术并重点讨论了边际油田和不经济储量的情况。降低成本是任何一种增产方法首先需要考虑的因素，这一目标可以通过以下过程来实现：在整个油藏中注入包含微生物的少量溶液，持续产生所需的化学物质与气体，从而提高石油采收率和效益。本文也描述了用MEOR技来迎接开采大量石油挑战的战略，这非常有助于填补今天“能源饥渴世界”的能源空白。

Lymphocyte recovery is an independent predictor of relapse in allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation recipients for acute leukemia

AIM To examine the optimal absolute lymphocyte count(ALC) cut-off utilizing receiver operator characteristics(ROC) in addition to graft characteristics associated with early ALC *** Patients who received T-cell replete peripheral hematopoietic cell transplantation(HCT) for acute leukemia were identified. ALC cut-off was established using ROC analysis and subsequently the cohort was stratified. Time to endpoint analysis and cox regression modelling was computed to analyze outcomes. RESULTS A total of 72 patients met the inclusion criteria andwere analyzed. Optimal ALC cut-off was established to be on day 14(D14) with ALC > 0.3 × 10~9/L. At 2 years, cumulative incidence of relapse was 16.9% vs 46.9%(P = 0.025) for early and delayed lymphocyte recovery cohorts, respectively. Chronic graft vs host disease was more prevalent in the early lymphocyte recovery(ELR) group at 70% vs 27%, respectively(P = 0.0006). On multivariable analysis for relapse, ELR retained its prognostic significance with HR = 0.27(0.05-0.94, P = 0.038).CONCLUSION ELR is an independent predictor for relapse in patients receiving allogeneic HCT for acute leukemia. ELR was influenced by graft characteristics particularly CD34 count.

Development of GPS-Based Multi-Channel Controllers for Research Plot Pesticide Applicators

Pesticide efficacy tests are typically conducted in experimental plots which involve applying multiple chemical treatments at different application rates and timings. Utilizing a single boom pesticide applicator requires navigating to individual plots, applying a pesticide assigned to those plots and when all replications are completed, cleaning the equipment and reloading the next pesticide treatment into the tank. It usually takes several hours to accomplish this task, especially when the left hand side of a plot requires a different pesticide treatment than the right hand side. In order to facilitate application of pesticide treatments in experimental plots, two map-based controller systems were developed to drive multi-channel pesticide applicators. The Clemson “Multi-Channel Chemical Controllers” consist of solid-state relays controlled by custom software, solenoid valves, and GPS receivers. The first system can control up to 24 individual booms which could independently apply up to 24 different chemical treatments in each field plot area. The second system is the Clemson “Intelligent Farm Controller” (iFc), which could be connected to a variety of devices, such as spray and motor actuators. For this study, the controller was designed to handle four output pins to control four relays;however, it could easily be expanded to control more relays, if needed. On average, these systems reduced application times in test fields from six hours to 20 minutes, compared to single-boom applicators (p = 0.001), thereby reducing the time interval between treatment applications and significantly reducing the potential effect of adverse weather.
