Ischemic preconditioning inhibits development of edematous cerulein-induced pancreatitis: Involvement of cyclooxygenases and heat shock protein 70

AIM： To determine whether ischemic preconditioning （IP） affects the development of edematous cerulein-induced pancreatitis and to assess the role of cyclooxygenase-1 （COX-l）, COX-2, and heat shock protein 70 （HSP 70） in this process. METHODS： In male Wistar rats, IP was performed by damping of celiac artery （twice for 5 min at 5-min intervals）. Thirty minutes after IP or sham operation, acute pancreatitis was induced by cerulein. Activity of COX-1 or COX-2 was inhibited by resverabol or rofecoxib, respectively （10 rng/kg）. RESULTS： IP significantly reduced pancreatic damage in cerulein-induced pancreatitis as demonstrated by the improvement of pancreas histology, reduction in serum lipase and poly-C ribonuclease activity, and serum concentration of pro-inflammatory interleukin （IL）-1β. Also, IP attenuated the pancreatitis-evoked fall in pancreatic blood flow and pancreatic DNA synthesis. Serum level of anti-inflammatory IL-10 was not affected by IP. Cerulein-induced pancreatitis and IP increased the content of HSP 70 in the pancreas. Maximal increase in HSP 70 was observed when IP was combined with cerulein-induced pancreatitis. Inhibition of COXs, especially COX-2, reduced the protective effect of IP in edematous pancreatitis. CONCLUSION： Our results indicate that IP reducespancreatic damage in cerulein-induced pancreatitis and this effect, at least in part, depends on the activity of COXs and pancreatic production of HSP 70.

Background： The parent-to-child influences can be adaptive and contribute to the optimal psychological well-being and positive perception of the athlete. Contrary to the healthy parental involvement, a family can also have negative effects on an athlete development. The purpose of this study was to determine gender, father involvement, and mother involvement differences in the psychological profiles of collegiate freshmen athletes as measured by perfectionism, physical self-concept, and psychological well-being. Methods： Eighty-two male and 73 female collegiate freshmen responded to self-reported measures of family involvement, perfectionism, physical self-concept, and psychological well-being. Three separate 2 x 2 x 2 （gender x mother involvement x father involvement） factorial multivariate analysis of variance （MANOVAs） were carried out on the respective subscales from the reported measures. Results： There were significant differences for gender as well as father involvement in perfectionism （p 〈 0.01）. Freshmen females had lower concern over mistakes, and greater levels of organization as well as planfulness than males. Furthermore, freshmen athletes with high involved fathers showed greater levels of high standards for others as well as organization. Crohn's disease(CD) is an inflammatory bowel disease that can affect any site of the digestive system. It occurs due to an immunological imbalance and is responsible for intestinal mucosal lesions and complications such as fistulas and stenoses. Treatment aims to stabilize the disease, reducing the symptoms and healing intestinal lesions. Surgical procedures are common in patients. Cell therapy was initially used to treat this disease in patients who also suffered from lymphoma and leukemia and were considered to be good candidates for autologous and allogeneic transplantation. After transplantation, an improvement was also observed in their CD. In 2003, the procedure began to be used to treat the disease itself, and several case series and randomized studies have been published since then; this approach currently comprises a new option in the treatment of CD. However, considerable doubt along with significant gaps in our knowledge continue to exist in relation to cell therapy for CD. Cell therapy is currently restricted to the autologous modality of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and, experimentally, to mesenchymal stromal cells to directly treat lesions of the anal mucosa. This article presents the supporting claims for transplantation as well as aspects related to the mobilization regime, conditioning and perspectives of cell therapy.

Data evaluation strategies for the novel coupled MCC-IMS sensory system are developed. Mayor attention to the plausibility of applied procedures and the feasibility of automation was paid. Three stages of extraction levels with increasing data reduction are presented for several fields of application. According to suitable extraction levels, real data were tested on various structures of artificial neural networks (ANN) with the result, that the computational levels must still be chosen by expertise, but subsequent processing and training can be fully automated. For the training of larger net- works a method of automated generation of secondary training data is presented which exceeds the quality of previous noise models by far. It is concluded that the combination of MCC-IMS as measuring instrument and ANNs as evalua- tion technique have high potential for industrial use in process monitoring.

The aim of the study was the statistical evaluation of the impact of water potential (pF), oxygen availability (ODR) and the way of land use on microbial biomass (MB) and soil DNA content. Soil was extracted from the surface (0 - 20 cm) and subsurface (20 - 40 cm) layers of Mollic Gleysol. Soil material was collected in July 2009 from the village Kosiorow (SE part of Poland), from the two distinct neighbouring areas: agriculturally exploited (AE), and fallow land (FL), which served as the control area. Moisture content was determined for a range of pF values (0, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0), which corresponded to availability of water usable by microorganisms and plant roots. Finally, our results revealed significant (p < 0.001) positive relationship between DNA and soil MB content, and negative correlations between soil MB and both pF and ODR. Importantly, MB seemed significantly dependent on the different way of land use, and higher MB content was noted in the soil agriculturally exploited (p < 0.05) in contrast to the control area.

Business war games are strategic management exercises that bring the military scenario simulation to a commercial setting, helping business managers to better understand the environment in which they operate and anticipate scenarios, such as competition movements, new product launching and production capacity planning, among others. These exercises normally take place with players organized in teams, gathered in a room, with a static package of information provided beforehand. In this paper we present an alternative, dynamic way of playing a business war game, with players geographically dispersed, and information dynamically available as it is available from its sources. We introduce BigPicture, an analytical platform with unique features that allow it to be an ideal “playground” for conducting more realistic business war games.
