TheDNArepair enzyme AlkB was identified in *** more than three decades *** then,nine mammalian homologs,all members of the superfamily of alpha-ketoglutarate and Fe(II)-dependent dioxygenases,have been identified(designated ALKBH1–8 and FTO).While *** AlkB serves as a DNA repair enzyme,only two mammalian homologs have been confirmed to repair DNA in *** other mammalian homologs have remarkably diverse substrate specificities and biological *** recognized by the different AlkB homologs comprise erroneous methyl-and etheno adducts in DNA,unique wobble uridine modifications in certain tRNAs,methylated adenines in mRNA,and methylated lysines on *** phenotypes of organisms lacking or overexpressing individual AlkB homologs include obesity,severe sensitivity to inflammation,infertility,growth retardation,and multiple *** we review the present knowledge of the mammalian AlkB homologs and their implications for human disease and development.

Perfusion of individual tissues is a basic physiological process that is necessary to sustain oxygenation and nutrition at a cellular level. Ischemia, or the insuff iciency of perfusion, is a common mechanism for tissue death or degeneration, and at a lower threshold, a mechanism for the generation of sensory signalling including pain. It is of considerable interest to study perfusion of pe- ripheral abdominal tissues in a variety of circumstances. Microvascular disease of the abdominal organs has been implicated in the pathogenesis of a variety of disorders, including peptic ulcer disease, inflammatory bowel disease and chest pain. The basic principle of laser Doppler perfusion monitoring (LDPM) is to analyze changes in the spectrum of light reflected from tissues as a response to a beam of monochromatic laser light emitted. It reflects the total local microcirculatory blood perfusion, including perfusion in capillaries, arterioles, venules and shunts. During the last 20-25 years, numerous studies have been performed in different parts of the gastroin-testinal (GI) tract using LDPM. In recent years we have developed a multi-modal catheter device which includes a laser Doppler probe, with the intent primarily to investigate patients suffering from functional chest pain of presumed oesophageal origin. Preliminary studies show the feasibility of incorporating LDPM into such catheters for performing physiological studies in the GI tract. LDPM has emerged as a research and clinical tool in preference to other methods; but, it is important to be aware of its limitations and account for them when reporting results.

With rampant growth and improvements in drilling technology, drilling of blast holes should no longer be viewed as an arduous sub-process in any mining or excavation process. Instead, it must be viewed as an important opportunity to quickly and accurately measure the geo-mechanical features of the rock mass on-site, much in advance of the downstream operations. It is well established that even the slightest variation in lithology, ground conditions, blast designs vis-a-vis geologic features and explosives performance, results in drastic changes in fragmentation results. Keeping in mind the importance of state-of-the-art measurement-while-drilling （MWD） technique, the current paper focuses on integrating this technique with the blasting operation in order to enhance the blasting designs and results. The paper presents a preliminary understanding of various blasting models, blastability and other related concepts, to review the state-of-the-art advancements and researches done in this area. In light of this, the paper highlights the future needs and implications on drill monitoring systems for improved information to enhnnrp th~ hl^tin~ r^HIt~

The 33rd International Geological Congress is being organised jointly by the Nordic countries and to be held in Oslo, Norway, August 6-14th, 2008. This ＂Geoscience World Congress 2008＂ will run up to 40 parallel science sessions, poster sessions, an extensive exhibition, short-courses, workshops, and business meet- ings; about 50 exciting preand post-Congress excursions are planned. The excursions include all the Nordic countries, as well as Greenland, Svalbard, the Faeroes, Russia and Ukraine. All major geoscientific themes are being covered by the Congress which has been divided into two parts, Sunday lOth August being without Symposia and dedicated to workshops, short courses, business meetings and excursions. Through a series of ＂Themes of the Day＂, seven themes with major societal impact will be covered in plenary sessions with invited lecturers, including a key-note ＂StatoiIHydro lecture＂ given each day during the lunch interval. The venue is set up to offer a compact Congress with easy access to all sessions and other events. An extensive social and cultural programme is also being arranged.

CAD-VR geometry and meta data synchronization for design review applications

In this paper we present the MEMPHIS middleware framework for the integration of CAD geometries and assemblies with derived Virtual Reality (VR) models and its specific meta data and attributes. The goal of this work is to connect real time VR applications, especially for the Design Review, with enterprise software storing and managing CAD models (Product Data Man- agement—PDM). The preparation of VR models requires expert knowledge, is time consuming, and includes selection of required CAD data, tessellation, healing of unwanted gaps, applying materials and textures, and special surface and light effects. During the Design Review process, decisions are made concerning the choice of materials and surface forms. While materials can be switched directly on the VR model, the modification of part geometries must be made on the CAD model. Our system synchronizes modi- fications of the original CAD geometries and of attributes that are relevant for the realistic rendering using the PLM Services standard. Thus, repeated work for the VR preparation can be avoided.

Effects of centralized and local PV plant control for voltage regulation in LV feeder based on cyber-physical simulations

In the modern power system, both local and centralized reactive power control strategies for photovoltaic(PV) plants, are proposed and compared. While local control improves the network security, it lacks the optimization benefits from centralized control ***, this paper considers the coordination of the two control strategies, depending on external impact from the weather system and consumer behavior, in a low voltage(LV) distribution feeder. Through modeling and simulation in an established real-time cyber-physical simulation platform, the LV network is evaluated with both local and centralized control. A set of boundaries for coordinating between the two strategies are identified, which can help network operators decide suitable control in different operating situations. Furthermore, the cyber-physical simulation platform, is used to study the impact of physical perturbations, i.e. changes in irradiance and consumption,and cyber disturbances, in form of communication channel noise, is evaluated for the control strategies. Results show how small and large disturbances in the cyber system affect the centralized control strategy optimizer performance.

Amending a tropical Arenosol:increasing shares of biochar and clay improve the nutrient sorption capacity

Tropical Arenosols may be challenging for agricultural use,particularly in semi-arid *** aim of this study was to evaluate the impact of the addition of increasing shares of biochar and clay on the nutrient sorption capacity of a tropical *** batch equilibrium experiments,the sorption of ammonium-N(NH_(4)^(+)-N),nitrate-N(NO_(3)^(−)-N),potassium(K^(+)),and phosphate-P(PO_(4)^(3−)-P)was quantified for mixtures of an Arenosol with increasing shares of biochar and clay(1%,2.5%,5%,10%,100%)and the unmixed Arenosol,biochar,and *** mid-temperature biochar was produced from Prosopis juliflora feedstock;the clayey material was taken from the sedimentary parent material of a temporarily dry *** the Arenosol-biochar mixture with 10%biochar addition and the biochar increased the NH_(4)^(+)-N maximum sorption capacity(q_(max))of the Arenosol,by 34%and 130%,*** q_(max)of PO_(4)^(3−)-P slightly increased with ascending biochar shares(1-10%)by 14%,30%,26%,and 42%,whereas the undiluted biochar released PO_(4)^(3−)-*** addition slightly reduced NO_(3)^(−)-N release from the Arenosol but strongly induced K^(+)*** the other hand,clay addition of 10%and clay itself augmented q_(max)of NH_(4)^(+)-N by 30%and 162%;ascending clay rates(1-100%)increased q_(max)for PO_(4)^(3−)-P by 78%,130%,180%,268%,and 712%.Clay rates above 5%improved K^(+)sorption;however,no q_(max)values could be *** of NO_(3)^(−)-N remained unaffected by clay ***,clay addition proved to enhance the nutrient sorption capacity of the Arenosol more effectively than biochar;nonetheless,both materials may be promising amendments to meliorate sandy soils for agricultural use in the semi-arid tropics.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is ranked the fourth most common cause of cancer related deaths in western countries with a 5-year survival rate of less than 8% (1). It is estimated to be even the second most common cause by 2030 as there are no successful treatment options (2). Due to the lack of early and specific symptoms as well as non-invasive biomarkers, the majority of patients is diagnosed at an advanced and already metastasized disease stage, where palliative treatment remains the only option (3). Thus, in order to improve the dismal prognosis of PDAC patients, a much better understanding of PDAC evolution is urgently needed allowing earlier detection of the disease and providing novel therapeutic modalities. It is well appreciated that the most common precursor lesion of PDAC is the pancreatic intraepithelial neoplasia (PanIN) (4). According to the progression model (5,6) and supported by genetic studies, PanINs develop from low-grade to high-grade lesions finally leading to an invasive carcinoma. This progression is characterized and driven by the acquisition of genetic (and epigenetic) alterations. In fact, mutations in the oncogene kras, being one of the earliest genetic alterations, are present in 99% of even early low-grade PanINs (PanIN1) (5,6). In resected PDAC tissues, PanINs are often found in and around the tumor mass (7). Genetic analysis revealed that PanINs and adjacent carcinoma tissues share many common mutations albeit some mutations are apparently acquired not until the carcinoma stage (8,9). These data indicate that PDAC may;origin from neighboring PanINs. However, the biology and genetic relationship between PanINs and PDAC and thereby PDAC evolution is still poorly understood.
