Growth plasticity of conifers did not avoid declining resilience to soil and atmospheric droughts during the 20th century

Background:Plasticity in response to environmental drivers can help trees cope with ***,our understanding of the importance of plasticity and physiological adjustments in trees under global change is ***:We used the International Tree-Ring Data Bank(ITRDB)to examine 20th century growth responses in conifer trees during(resistance)and following(resilience)years of severe soil and atmospheric droughts occurring in isolation or as compound *** resilience indices were calculated using observed growth divided by expected growth to avoid spurious correlations,in which the expected values were obtained by the autoregressive moving average(ARImA)*** used high atmospheric vapour pressure deficit(VPD)to select years of atmospheric drought and low annual values of the Standardized Precipitation-Evapotranspiration Index(SPEI)to select years with soil *** acquired the sensitivities(i.e.,the slopes of the relationships)by fitting the resilience indices as a function of environmental drivers,and assessed how these sensitivities changed over time for different types of drought events using linear mixed *** also checked whether plasticity in growth responses was sufficient to prevent long-term trends of growth reductions during or after severe *** acknowledge that by focusing on the response of surviving trees from the ITRDB we are potentially biasing our results towards higher resilience,as stand level responses(e.g.,mortality)may result in lowered competition after the disturbance ***:Sensitivities of resilience to VPD and SPEI changed throughout the 20th century,with the directions of these changes often reversing in the second half of the *** the 1961–2010 period,changing sensitivities had positive effects on resilience,especially following years of high-VPD and compound events,avoiding growth losses that would have occurred if sensitivities had remained *** sensitivity changes,resilience

We present a diode-pumped, electro-optically Q-switched Tm:YAG laser with a cryogenically cooled laser crystal at120 K. Output pulses of up to 2.55 mj and 650 ns duration were demonstrated in an actively Q-switched configuration with a repetition rate of 1 Hz. By using cavity dumping the pulse duration was shortened to 18 ns with only a slightly lower output energy of 2.22 mj. Furthermore, using a simplified rate equation model, we discuss design constraints on the pump fluence in a pulse pump approach for Tm:YAG to maximize the energy storage capability at a given pump power.

Biocompatible Blends Based on Poly(Vinyl Alcohol)and Solid Organic Waste

This work is aimed at the development of new green composite materials through the incorporation of the solid organic waste(SOW)in a thermoplastic *** being ground,the organic waste was exposed to a sterilization process,though an autoclave cycle,in order to obtain a complete removal of the bacterial *** SOW was found to have a high amount of water,about 65-70%,which made uneconomical its further treatment to reduce the water ***,a water soluble polymer,poly(vinyl alcohol)(PVA)was chosen in order to produce SOW based ***,in order to reduce the viscosity of the PVA/SOW slurry,further amount of water was *** very low viscosity attained by the water suspension allowed to process the PVA/SOW blends by a pressure-free process,for the production of samples,which were afterwards subjected to physical and mechanical *** tests showed the promising properties of the developed *** particular,the relevance of porosity was *** the water amount involved a signification increase of porosity,due to a faster water evaporation during *** the other hand,compared to neat PVA,addition of SOW allowed to significantly decrease the porosity of the produced *** this,the mechanical properties of the PVA/SOW blends were shown to be lower than those of neat PVA processed analogously.

Probable benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, spontaneously resolved:Incidence in medical practice, patients’ characteristics and the natural course

Background: Probable benign paroxysmal positional vertigo, spontaneously resolved (pBPPVsr), is a variant of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) in which there is no observable nystagmus and no vertigo with any positional maneuver. Objectives: To calculate the incidence pBPPVsr, compare the characteristics of the patients with pBPPVsr and BPPV not spontaneously resolved and describe the spontaneous resolution in the natural course of BPPV. methods: multicenter prospective descriptive study. During a one-year period, all patients with suspected BPPV that presented to the Neurotology Units of five participating centers were recruited. The incidence of pBPPVsr was calculated as a percentage of the total number of patients with BPPV. The prevalence of several variables was compared between pBPPVsr and BPPV not spontaneously resolved. The timing of spontaneous resolution was estimated using Kaplan-meier curves. Results: 457 patients met the inclusion criteria. The incidence of pBPPVsr was 33.5%. It was significantly higher in males, in patients with normal bone mass and in patients who were not taking sulpiride. A rate of 18% of spontaneous resolution after the first month and 51% after the first year was found. This percentage did not change in a significant way after this moment. The curves for males, patients under 50 and patients with normal blood pressure decreased significantly faster. Conclusions: In our serie, BPPV spontaneously resolved in half of the patients with BPPV during the first year. This seemed to occur more commonly in males and could have been hindered by sulpiride intake, osteoporosis, advanced age and high blood pressure.

Based on systematic experiments on the influence of air entrainment on rock block stability in plunge pools impacted by high-velocity jets,this study presents adaptations of a physically based scour *** modifications regarding jet aeration are implemented in the Comprehensive Scour model(CSm),allowing it to reproduce the physical-mechanical processes involved in scour formation concerning the three phases;namely,water,rock,and *** enhanced method considers the reduction of momentum of an aerated jet as well as the decrease of energy dissipation in the jet diffusive shear layer,both resulting from the entrainment of air *** ejection from the rock mass depends on a combination of the aerated time-averaged pressure coefficient and the modified maximum dynamic impulsion coefficient,which was found to be a constant value of 0.2 for high-velocity jets in deep *** modified model is applied to the case of the observed scour hole at the Kariba Dam,with good agreement.
