Social determinants of health—Street children at crossroads

1The term “street children” has been used inter changeably with “children in especially difficult circumstances” in the remaining document. This paper discusses the findings of a research project which is an exploratory cum descriptive study [1] that aims to describe and examine the state and nature of the quality of life of street children accommodated at an unorganised colony in the city of Delhi. It provides a social profile of children and their families, and exploring the needs and aspirations of these children living in especially difficult circumstances. A non-probability sample of 100 street children in the age group of 5-16 years was randomly selected guided by their availability. An interview schedule was constructed and administered to gather data. The statistical analyses comprised frequencies and percentages on all the sections of the interview schedule. Thematic content analysis was used to analyse data from open-ended questions and observations. Case studies were supportive in giving an insight into the lives of children living in especially difficult circumstances. Findings suggest that the quality of life of the participants in this study was depressed due to a lack of access or substandard educational and medical facilities, or absence of emotional support from their poverty stricken families. The existing limited programmes by the government or the civil society for the welfare of street children are lacking in their focus and do not include the voices and needs of the beneficiaries. Although service providers expressed sympathy for street children, many regarded them as deviants, delinquents, future criminals, and a public nuisance. Based on the findings, it has been suggested that the street child phenomenon necessitates a partnership between governmental and non-governmental organizations to provide for policy and legislation, funding and resources to translate programs into concrete plans of action. Can Waist Circumference Be Used as an Anthropometric Parameter to Assess the Obesity Related Pregnancy Outcome: A Case Control Study

Introduction: The prevalence of obesity is increasing in women of reproductive age. Maternal obesity is associated with increased morbidity and mortality for both mother and offspring. BMI has been criticized as a limited measure of total obesity. Measurement of waist circumference can be useful in the assessment of abdominal obesity and disease risk. The study is aimed to evaluate the waist circumference as an anthropometric parameter in identifying women at risk of developing obstetric complications. Material and Methods: A prospective study was conducted at a tertiary health care centre on 200 antenatal women of age between 18 to 35 years with singleton pregnancy attending the antenatal clinic before 8 weeks of gestation. Women were divided into two groups. Group I included 100 women with waist circumference < 80 cm and Group II included 100 women with waist circumference ≥ 80 cm. Weight, height and waist circumference were measured and BMI was calculated. All the women were followed throughout their pregnancies as per the routine antenatal follow up. The fetomaternal outcome was recorded and analyzed statistically. Results: The two groups were comparable in age, parity and demographic profile. The maternal and neonatal complications—preeclampsia (p = 0.0052, RR 0.5062, 95% CI 0.2935 - 0.8728), gestational diabetes mellitus, preterm labor, postdatism, need for induction of labor (p value 0.0081, RR 0.6263, 95% CI 0.4314, 0.9091), instrumental vaginal delivery, cesarean delivery (p = 0.0072, RR 0.5745, 95% CI 0.3696, 0.8929), shoulder dystocia, PPH, macrosomia, neonatal asphyxia, admission to NICU were reported more in Group II women as compared to Group I. Conclusion: Assessment of waist circumference in early pregnancy provides a simple and practical parameter for predicting obesity related pregnancy outcome. All pregnancies in centrally obese women (waist circumference ≥ 80 cm) shall be acknowledged as high risk.

Co-Orelation of Histological Dating and Glycogen Content by Histochemical Stain during Various Phases of Menstrual Cycle in Primary Infertility

Glycogen and its products of metabolism are considered to be the most important and direct source of nutrient for the early conceptus. The premenstrual biopsies were taken from 100 women with primary infertility whose male partners had normal semenograms. The biopsies were then subjected to Haematoxylin and Eosin (H & E) and Periodic Acid Schiff (PAS) staining with and without diastase to study histological and histochemical changes particularly glycogen content in the endometrium respectively. Histolomorphologic spectrum of endometrium on H & E stained sections revealed early proliferative phase (4%), late proliferative phase (7%) and early secretory phase (7%), mid secretory phase (33%) and late secretory phase (49%). PAS staining with or without diastase for glycogen was performed and glycogen content, as demonstrated by magenta color, was graded from + to ++++. Glycogen content was observed to be “+” to “++” in proliferative phase, where as in secretory phase, it varied from “++” to “+++”. Glycogen was confirmed by treatment with diastase enzyme, after that PAS stain gave negative staining, i.e. loss of magenta color as glycogen was digested by diastase. Glycogen deficiency was observed in 24.7% of secretory phase endometrium of infertile women. Depletion of glycogen results in inadequate preparation of endometrium at the time of implantation, and hence, may be one of the causes of infertility.

Synthetic Detergents (Surfactants) and Organochlorine Pesticide Signatures in Surface Water and Groundwater of Greater Kolkata, India

An assessment on the concentration of surfactants and pesticides of chlorinated hydrocarbon group in surface and groundwater, is made from Greater Kolkata located in the Western Ganga Delta, one of the largest urban agglomerate in Asia. Concentration of both anionic synthetic detergents and organochlorine pesticide resi-dues analysed from 54 and 19 sampling stations covering groundwater and surface water sources respec-tively, are generally found to be within the tolerance limit for human consumption. The concentration of synthetic detergent ranges from 0.084 to 0.425mg/l. Residues of organochlorine pesticides are analysed from different sources like tanks, lakes, rivers and groundwater. Lindane (0.01-0.43μg/l) and DDT (0.03-0.65 μg/l) are the most widely detected pesticide residues. Howerer, the two have not exceeded the limits for drinking anywhere. High value of aldrin and dieldrin (0.9μg/l) is obtained in the river Hugli at Barakpur-Seoraphuli, 20 km north of Kolkata. Likewise high value of Heptachloreis detected in a canal water sample at Palta (0.05 μg/l), a suburban area. Seasonally, the pesticide concentration in surface water is maximum during winter due to their higher application and minimum during monsoon. In groundwater, however, this relationship is reverse due to higher infiltration of surface water during monsoon.

Prediction of COVID-19 Confirmed, Death, and Cured Cases in India Using Random Forest Model

A novel coronavirus(SARS-CoV-2) is an unusual viral pneumonia in patients, first found in late December 2019, latter it declared a pandemic by World Health Organizations because of its fatal effects on public health. In this present, cases of COVID-19 pandemic are exponentially increasing day by day in the whole world. Here, we are detecting the COVID-19 cases, i.e., confirmed, death, and cured cases in India only. We are performing this analysis based on the cases occurring in different states of India in chronological dates. Our dataset contains multiple classes so we are performing multi-class classification. On this dataset, first, we performed data cleansing and feature selection, then performed forecasting of all classes using random forest, linear model, support vector machine,decision tree, and neural network, where random forest model outperformed the others, therefore, the random forest is used for prediction and analysis of all the results. The K-fold cross-validation is performed to measure the consistency of the model.

Larvicidal activity of Dregea volubilis and Bombax malabaricum leaf extracts against the filarial vector Culex quinquefasciatus

Objective:To analyze the larvicidal activity of two plant leaf powder and leaf-extracts, Dregea volubilis and Bombax malabaricum against Culex ***:The larvicidal bioassay was done for powdered leaves of Dregea volubilis and Bombax malabaricum individually and their methanol extracts against first-,second-,third- and fourth-instar larval forms of Culex *** rate was recorded after 24,48 and 72 h of postexposure. LC50 and LG90 values were calculated at different time intervals for third instar larvae. Results:All the graded concentration（0.1%,0.2%,0.3%,0.4%,0.5%） of powdered leaves showed significant（P 50 values were 56.97 ppm and 48.85 ppm,respectively after 24 h of *** is no mortality of non-target organism such as Chironomous circumdatus,Oreochromis niloticus niloticus and Diplonichus annulatum within 72 h of post exposure to 0.1%,0.2%,0.3%crude powdered leaves and methanolic extracts of both the two individual plants under the laboratory *** results of preliminary qualitative phytochemical analysis of both the plants revealed the presence of many bioactive principles such as steroids,tannins,flavonoids,triterpenoids,saponins,etc. that may be responsible for their bio-control ***:The results have shown potential and eco-friendly use of both plant extracts against larva of Culex quinquefasciatus for the first time.
