The flowerpiercers interactions with a community of high Andean plants

Background:Flowerpiercers(Diglossa)are traditionally considered as“parasites”of the pollination processes,as they can access the nectar without entering in contact with the reproductive structures of the ***,the effect of flowerpiercers seems to vary according to their behavior and the flower’s ***,in this work,we aimed to explore the floral characteristics that may determine the susceptibility to robbing and pollen transport by ***,we identified the potential types of interactions and studied interaction network ***:We collected the information of 16 ornithophilic plants regarding their floral traits and robbing ***,we captured 4 species of flowerpiercers and evaluated pollen transport(frequency and loads).We tested the correlation between floral traits,robbing frequency,and pollen ***,we used these variables in a cluster and principal component analyses to identify the potential types of ***,we analyzed and com-pared the structure of the plants-flowerpiercers interaction ***:Nectar production significantly influenced both nectar robbing and pollen *** the corolla length was only correlated to the robbing ***,we found that particular flowerpiercers species trans-ported higher loads of some plant pollen,which can be related to the differences in behavior and morphometric *** proposed the classification of five different types of plant-flowerpiercer interactions,that showed differ-ent potential mutualist or antagonist relations based on the affectation of nectar robbing and the service of pollen *** interaction networks consisted of 49 links,with 2.4 links per species,and presented indicators of a medium to high resilience,stability,and resistance(nestedness,connectance,and robustness).Also,the network presented medium to low specialization and substantial niche ***:The ecological role of

In the recent days, the segmentation of Liver Tumor (LT) has beendemanding and challenging. The process of segmenting the liver and accuratelyspotting the tumor is demanding due to the diversity of shape, texture, and intensity of the liver image. The intensity similarities of the neighboring organs of theliver create difficulties during liver segmentation. The manual segmentation doesnot provide an accurate segmentation because the results provided by differentmedical experts can vary. Also, this manual technique requires a large numberof image slices and time for segmentation. To solve these issues, the Fully Automatic segmentation (FAs) technique is proposed. In this proposed Multi-AngleTexture Active Contour Model (MAT-ACM) method, the input Computed Tomography (CT) image is preprocessed by Contrast Enhancement (CE) with Non-Linear Mapping Technique (NLMT), in which the liver is differentiated from itsneighbouring soft tissues with related strength. Then, the filtered images are givenas the input to Adaptive Edge Modeling (AEM) with Canny Edge Detection(CED) technique, which segments the Liver Region (LR) from the given CTimages. An AEM with a CED model is implemented, which increases the convergence speed of the iterative process for decreasing the Volumetric Overlap Error(VOE) is 6.92% rates when compared with the traditional segmentation Techniques (sT). Finally, the Liver Tumor segmentation (LTs) is developed by applyingthe MAT-ACM, which accurately segments the LR from the segmented LRs. Theevaluation of the proposed method is compared with the existing LTs methodsusing various performance measures to prove the superiority of the proposedMAT-ACM method.

Internal migration motivated by access to higher education is a relatively unexplored topic in Colombia, leading to a lack of data on its dimensions, characteristics, and impacts on urban space and the emotional conditions of migrants. For this reason, an academic program of architecture in a public university was selected to comprehend the internal migrations of students, exploring their territorial experiences, living conditions, and social mobility capacity. An exploratory methodology was designed to recognize the phenomenon through a descriptive analysis, utilizing institutional data, surveys, and interviews. The research identifies the primary reasons, barriers, and impacts experienced by the migrant population in Ibagué, Colombia. The study concludes with recommendations pertaining to both institutional and urban planning to address these identified challenges.

Gastrosplenic fistula is a rare complication of gastric or splenic *** we report the case of a 48 years old man who developed a gastrosplenic fistula secondary to splenic diffuse large B-cell lymphoma,successfully managed with hand-assisted laparoscopic splenectomy and gastric wedge resection.A review of the available literature is also presented,33 cases of gastrosplenic fistula associated to gastric or splenic lymphoma were found,of which 25 were treated *** case represents the first report of laparoscopic treatment of lymphoma-related gastrosplenic fistula described to our knowledge in the available literature.

Earthquake and deterioration inclusive probabilistic life cycle assessment(EDP-LCA)framework for buildings

With increasing demand to reduce the carbon emission of buildings,it is crucial to quantify the life cycle envi-ronmental impact of new buildings,including the environmental impact due to natural hazards,such as *** study presents a novel comprehensive probabilistic framework to quantify the environmental impact of buildings,including uncertainties in the material extraction and production,transportation,construction,seis-mic exposure and aging(including deterioration),and end-of-life *** developed framework is used to quantify the environmental impact of a 3-story residential building located in Vancouver,*** results show that there is a significant variation in the environmental impact of the prototype building in each stage of the life cycle *** the prototype building is hit by the design level earthquake,it is expected that the median environmental impact of the prototype will be further increased by 42%.In addition,by accounting for the probability of occurrence of different earthquakes within a 50-year design life of the prototype building,the earthquake related damage will result in an additional 5%of the initial carbon emission of the *** shows the importance of including earthquake hazard and deterioration in whole building life cycle assessments.

Objective:This study was designed to investigate the wound healing activity of aqueous extracts of Ullucus tuberosus(***) using in vitro ***:Lyophilized pulp and acetone extracts of *** were produced using ultrasound *** capacity for collagenase activation was evaluated using fluorescence detection of the enzymatic ***,the influence of *** extracts on cell proliferation,cell migration and synthesis of the extracellular matrix(ECM)proteins,metalloproteinase(MMP-1) and pro-collagen was analyzed using human dermal fibroblasts in ***:An increase in collagenase activity of 12% supports the utility of *** as an agent for scar *** addition,the extracts showed an increase in the proliferation and migration of human dermal fibroblasts and the production of pro-collagen and MMP-1 after treatment with *** *** increase in proliferation,migration and pro-collagen levels positively influenced the regeneration of scarless tissue during the proliferation phase,whereas the increase in MMP-1 may have favored the wound healing process during the remodeling and cellular differentiation ***:The results of this study show for first time that *** is a promising candidate to support scarless tissue regeneration.

Parallel droplet microfluidics for high throughput cell encapsulation and synthetic microgel generation

Cells can be microencapsulated in synthetic hydrogel microspheres(microgels)using droplet microfluidics,but microfluidic devices with a single droplet generating geometry have limited throughput,especially as microgel diameter *** we demonstrate microencapsulation of human mesenchymal stem cells(hMsCs)in small(o100μm diameter)microgels utilizing parallel droplet generators on a two-layer elastomer device,which has 600% increased throughput ***-nozzle *** of microgel diameters were compared between products of parallel ***-nozzle configurations for two square nozzle widths,35 and 100μ*** produced on parallel nozzles were equivalent to those produced on single nozzles,with substantially the same *** of hMsCs was compared for parallel nozzle devices of each *** five micrometer wide nozzle devices could be operated at twice the cell concentration of 100μm wide nozzle devices but produced more empty microgels than predicted by a Poisson *** micrometer wide nozzle devices produced microgels as predicted by a Poisson *** of microgels did not increase with the addition of cells for either nozzle *** encapsulated on 35μm wide nozzle devices had reduced viability(~70%)and a corresponding decrease in vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF)secretion compared to hMsCs cultured on tissue culture(TC)*** hMsCs using 100μm wide nozzle devices mitigated loss of viability and function,as measured by VEGF secretion.

sex-biased mortality can occur in birds during development,for example due to sexual differences in energy requirement and/or environmental sensitivity,or the effects of sex hormones or sex differences in the expression of mutations linked to sex *** extent of sex-bias in mortality may also be related to environmental conditions that influence offspring development and *** areas often provide poorer conditions for nestling development resulting in higher offspring mortality compared to natural areas,which may accelerate sex differences in offspring mortality in *** test this hypothesis,we examined the sex ratio of dead offspring in Great Tits(Parus major),using 427 samples of unhatched eggs and dead nestlings collected in two urban and two forest sites between 2013 and *** ratio of males in the whole sample of dead offspring(56.9%)was significantly higher than expected by an 1:1 ratio,and the strongest sex biases were detected in urban areas(57.6%males)and in young nestlings(s old,59.0%males).However,the sex ratios of dead offspring did not differ significantly among study sites and between offspring developmental stages.29.3%of unhatched eggs contained a visible embryo,and the proportion of embryo-containing unhatched eggs did not differ significantly between urban and forest study *** results suggest male-biased offspring mortality in Great Tits,and highlight the need of large datasets to detect subtle differences between habitats and developmental stages.

Higher production of tumor necrosis factor alpha in hemozoin-fed human adherent monocytes is dependent on lipidic component of malarial pigment:new evidences on cytokine regulation in Plasmodium falciparum malaria

Objective:To investigate whether the increase of tumor necrosis factor alpha is dependent on lipidic component of malarial ***:Adherent human monocytes were fed for 3 hours with different meals(native hemozoin;lipid free hemozoin;and control latex particles),then tumor necrosis factor alpha was monitored in cell supernatants up to 48 hours through western blotting or specific enzyme-linked immunoadsorbent *** selected experiments,unfed monocytes were treated with different doses of 15(s,R)-hydroxy-6,8,11,13-eicosatetraenoic acid or 4-hydroxynonenal instead of ***:Hemozoin-fed monocytes produced higher levels of tumor necrosis factor alpha than unstimulated and latex-fed cells, while lipid-free hemozoin did not reproduce these ***,hemozoin effects were mimicked dose-dependently by 15(s,R)-hydroxy-6,8,11,13-eicosatetraenoic acid,but not by ***:Present data suggest an essential role for lipids in hemozoindependent enhanced release of tumor necrosis factor alpha from monocytes,and 15(s,R)hydroxy -6,8,11,13-eicosatetraenoic acid could be one possible specific mediator.

Double-brooding and annual breeding success of great tits in urban and forest habitats

Urban areas differ from natural habitats in several environmental features that influence the characteristics of animals living *** example,birds often start breeding seasonally earlier and fledge fewer offspring per brood in cities than in natural ***,longer breeding seasons in cities may increase the frequency of double-brooding in urban compared with nonurban populations,thus potentially increasing urban birds’annual reproductive output and resulting in lower habitat difference in reproductive success than estimated by studies focusing on first clutches *** this study,we investigated 2 urban and 2 forests great tit Parus major populations from 2013 to *** compared the probability of double-brooding and the total number of annually fledged chicks per female between urban and forest habitats,while controlling for the effects of potentially confounding *** was a trend for a higher probability of double-brooding in urban(44%of females)than in forest populations(36%),although this was not consistent between the 2 urban *** produced significantly fewer fledglings annually in the cities than in the forest sites,and this difference was present both within single-and double-brooded ***,double-brooded urban females produced a similar number of fledglings per season as single-brooded forest *** results indicate that double-brooding increases the reproductive success of female great tits in both habitats,but urban females cannot effectively compensate in this way for their lower reproductive output per ***,other mechanisms like increased post-fledging survival can mitigate habitat differences in reproductive success.
