This article is about the methods and techniques used in the building ＂retrofit＂ in modernist style designed by the architect Affonso Eduardo Reidy in the fifties, and also about the project of the new Rio de Janeiro MIS （Museum of Image and Sound）, under construction, by The North-American office Diller Scofidio ＋ Renfro, both located in the city of Rio de Janeiro. These constructions present a wide view of the concept of sustainability, not commonly used in public buildings in Brazil. In the building designed by Reidy, which belongs to the State of Rio de Janeiro, the regeneration to host the new headquarters of the State Department of Taxation and Finance respected its original characteristics and used smart and sustainable design techniques, as well as recyclable materials. On the other hand, the project of the new museum at Copacabana Beach was entirely planned on sustainable bases and it includes the application of building techniques concerning that purpose. This article presents a study of these two cases and evaluates the techniques and materials used in one another. Observing the principles of sustainability in construction is a pioneering initiative of the State Government. This article aims at making the scientific community aware of the needs of immediate adoption of sustainability techniques in Civil Engineering, not only in the construction of new buildings, but also in the regeneration of the existing ones, as well as the need of imperious adoption of sustainable techniques when it comes to maintainability.

The lack of care related to maintenance management is directly linked to the absence of plans for maintenance of buildings. Because of that, there is a big incidence of building accidents caused by the negligence of managers and the lack of investment. The research has shown that, although building inspection is a consolidated building maintenance tool, managers do not prepare their building maintenance plan, nor use building inspection as a tool, leading the buildings to the premature obsolescence. The research calls attention to the building inspection technique that can be used to evaluate building maintenance and conservation. It is also a tool for analysis and investment planning based on actions to solve failures and anomalies that might come out during the building inspection. Those failures and anomalies are classified according to their degree of risk, determining the technical priorities of the investment adjustment in the maintenance plan. The paper presents a risk analysis methodology which classifies inspect elements in a building, determining the priority order of services to be executed on a scale from minimum risk （1） to imminent risk （5）. The method shows a tool for building inspection, and it serves as a guideline for building maintenance interventions.

Currently, living Wall Systems (lWSs) are assuming great importance in the built environment, due to environmental and aesthetic advantages, as well as the use of urban residual space and underutilized surfaces of buildings. However, the maintenance and the durability of the materials used have been a challenge for architects and professionals in the field. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the anti-corrosion performance of a steel framing profile, galvanized carbon steel (55% Al-Zn), a sustainable material with easy assembly, to apply lWS in the hot and humid tropical climate of Niterói (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil). In order to create the conditions of the tests, “X” cut were made in Al-Zn coating, sanding, and application of epoxy and glass fiber-reinforced polyester. After the experiments that lasted four months, the 55% Al-Zn coating was analyzed using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). The results of the tests were promising for the use of this galvanized steel for application as a support for green vertical facades. 55% Al-Zn coatings are recommended for marine atmospheres due to their good anti-corrosion performance.

Risk Transfer for Populations in Precarious Urban Environments

This study explores risk transfer options that precarious and marginal urban communities could use to protect themselves from future damages and losses generated by socio-natural hazards and disasters at the individual and community levels. The design is framed within an evidence-based disaster risk reduction(DRR) strategy and follows the case study research approach. We analyze the2018 Neighborhood Approach for DRR programming evaluation carried out in four latin American cities’ informal settlements and review relevant risk transfer experiences aimed at vulnerable populations. We calculate the pure risk premium for the four cases selected, using a previous catastrophe risk assessment for earthquakes and landslides. We propose three risk transfer options based on our analysis:(1) voluntary collective insurance;(2) structural reinforcement with a comprehensive housing insurance;and(3) hybrid parametric insurance. Risk transfer mechanisms conventionally focus on residual risk management. Here, due to the precariousness of the analyzed urban settings, the proposed alternatives go beyond the management of just residual risk to positively impact the beneficiaries’ quality of life and the reduction of the built environment’s physical vulnerability in the short and medium terms. Our study proposes a prospective estimation of future risk despite the limitations of data availability. This study opens a window to new approaches and proposes a systematic process to design DRR policy aimed at the poor and vulnerable strata of society.

Novel antibacterial materials for implants and medical instruments are essential to develop practical strategies to stop the spread of healthcare associated infections. This study presents the synthesis of multifunctional antibacterial nanocoatings on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) by remote plasma assisted deposition of sublimated chlorhexidine powders at low pressure and room temperature. The obtained materials present effective antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli K12, either by contact killing and antibacterial adhesion or by biocide agents release depending on the synthetic parameters. In addition, these multifunctional coatings allow the endure hydrophilization of the hydrophobic PDMS surface, thereby improving their biocompatibility. Importantly, cell-viability tests conducted on these materials also prove their non-cytotoxicity, opening a way for the integration of this type of functional plasma films in biomedical devices.

This study explores the color preferences of elderly residents of nursing homes based on the expected activities for different rooms,activity rooms,and bedrooms and compares the results with the arousal level induced by each *** experime nts were con ducted,one with elderly people living in nursing homes in the Valen cian Comm unity,and the other in a laboratory with virtual reality and physiological markers(i.e.,heart rate variability).I dlviduals assessed six colors in two groups of warm and *** demonstrate that preferences for warm and cool colors depend on the room *** the activity room,warm colors were preferred over the cool colors by both genders,fitting the higher arousal levels induced by warm versus cool *** the bedrooms,cool colors were preferred by both genders,fitting the lower arousal levels induced by cool colors in females and the other models that suggest a U-shaped relation between the arousal level and the visible spectra of ***,the color preferences for interior spaces in nursing homes depend on the room type and are related to the arousal level for the expected activity in them.

Objectives： This study aimed to evaluate the in vitro antioxidant capacity, to determine the anti-inflammatory effect due to lipoxygenase inhibition and to test the antimicrobial activity of ethanolic extracts from leaves of seven climbing species belonging to the Bignoniaceae family. These species are Adenocalyrnrna rnarginatum （Cham.） DC., Amphilophium vauthieri DC., Cuspidaria convoluta （VEIl） A. H. Gentry, Dolichandra dentata （K. Schum.） l. G. lohmann, Fridericia caudigera （S. Moore） l. G. lohmann, Fridericia chica （Bonpl.） l. G. lohmann and Tanaecium selloi （Spreng.） l. G. lohmann. Methods： The antioxidant activity was evaluated using three methods, 2,2＇-azino-bis（3-ethylbenzothiazo line-6-sulfonic acid）（ABTS）, 2,2-diphenyl-l-picrylhydrazyl （DPPH）, and ferric reducing antioxidant power. lipoxygenase-inhibiting activity was assayed spectrophotometrically; the result was expressed as percent inhibition. The antimicrobial activity was assessed using the agar disk diffusion method. Minimal inhibitory concentration （MIC） and minimal bactericidal]fungicidal concentration were also determined for each extract against 12 pathogenic bacterial strains of Staphylococcus aureus and seven fungal strains of the Candida genus. The identification of the major compounds present in the most promising extract was established by high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Results： C convoluta, F. caudigera, and F. chica exhibited the best antioxidant activity by scavenging DPPH and ABTS~ radicals and reducing Fe3＋ ion. These extracts showed a notable inhibition of lipnxygenase. F. caudigera was found to have the lower MIC value against S. aureus strains and six Candida species. The extracts of F. caudigera and C. convoluta were active even against methicillin-resistant S. aureus. C convoluta had higher total phenol content, better antioxidant activity and superior anti- inflammatory and antimicrobial activity. The main phenolic compounds found in this extract
