Profile of Patients Treated in Outpatient Vestibular Rehabilitation at a Hospital in São Paulo

Introduction: Currently it is very common that the search for diagnosis and treatment for curing diseases can cause vertigo or dizziness. Objective: This study sought to characterize the profile of patients seen in the clinic for vestibular rehabilitation in a tertiary hospital in the last 10 years. Methods: Survey questionnaires of patients with dizziness. Results: The prevalence of treated subjects was female 65.3% (N = 439). The average age was 54.9 years old. Dizziness type roundabout was more prevalent 33.04% (N = 222). Tinnitus occurred in 58.33% of the population. The time of most observed dizziness was less than 5 years 70.68% (N = 475). Neurovegetative symptoms appeared in 63.98% (N = 430) of the population. The bilateral normal hearing was more standard 35.26% (N = 237). The topographic diagnosis of peripheral origin was the most usual 65.47% (N = 440). Conclusion: The peripheral otoneurologic involvement was more prevalent in this population, affecting more women at an average age of 54.9 years old. The most prevalent symptoms were vertigo, nausea, tachycardia, sweating, vomiting and tinnitus, characterizing the peripheral vestibular impairment. The time of dizziness was less than five years. Audiological standard normal curve was predominant and the symptom of tinnitus was the most reported. The most prevalent comorbidity was Hypertension.

Mesenchymal stromal cells(MSC)have shown their benefits in graft-versus-host disease(GVHD), with five unsettled matters: 1) MSCs expansion in medium with Fetal Bovine Serum(FBS)and its risk of xenoreaction;2) The number of cells indicated for therapy that is relatively high, with the need to optimize the expansion, number and time wise;3) The utilization of third party donors;4) Culture passage number(P);and 5) Source of the cells. This study was designed to determine the superiority of the Platelet Lysates(PL)over FBS on the expansion of MSC, the optimal cell’ plating density and days between each pass, and to investigate if donor total nucleated cells(TNC)obtained from the washouts of discharged bags and filters of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation(HSCT)can be expanded to be used at clinical grade. TNC were removed, plated and after the first passage were cultivated in different concentrations with FBS or PL, and the number of days to reach 80% of confluence was observed. Next, cultures with the same plating density were fed either with PL or with FBS and after seven days counted to analyze how much they had grown in that period. The proliferation of mesenchymal stromal cells in the presence of PL and SFB was averaged 11.88 and 2.5 times, respectively, in a period of 7 days. The highest concentration of plating cells using PL took less time to reach confluence as compared with the three lower ones. This study suggests that the PL is the best choice as a supplement to expand MSC and to allow the proliferation of enough number of MSC at P2 for clinical use.

The current study approaches the sugarcane culture expansion in Southwestern Goiás, especially in Mineiros, Quirinópolis and Rio Verde counties, which represent different times and responses to this process. The current logistics structure and future prospects for sugarcane and its derivatives transportation are studied at national level with emphasis to the aforementioned micro-region. Maps showing land use and land cover in three different years were generated from Landsat TM-5 satellite images and they were used to analyze the dynamics of changes in land use and in land cover. The region is marked by strong and rapid growth in the agricultural sector and its sugar-energy industry has been expanding in recent years, although with different aspects among its counties. Since it is a promising region in this sector, due to the favorable soil and weather conditions to the crop, the region requires more investment and planning in logistics to ensure production flow and to make it stronger within domestic and foreign markets.

Cellular radiosensitivity is directly correlated with the mechanism of DNA repair, in which p53 protein plays a major role. In this context, this study correlated cell death with p53 expression in lymphocytes irradiated in vitro with different doses of gammaradiation. For this, peripheral blood samples were collected from 10 healthy subjects. Each sample was divided in aliquots and, separately, irradiated with doses of 0,5;2 and 4 Gy. After this, peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were isolated and cultivated during 72 hours in 5% CO2 at 37oC without mitogen stimulation. The expression of p53 protein was evaluated by flow cytometry. In parallel, cell viability was determined by trypan blue staining. Statistical analysis was performed us-ing analysis of variance (ANOVA), differences were considered as statistically significant when p < 0.05. The results showed an increase of p53 expression with the absorbed dose, which was proportional to cell death, suggesting that p53 can be used as bioindicator of individual radiosensitivity.

Laurel forests are quite relevant for biodiversity conservation and are among the island ecosystems most severely damaged by human *** the past,Canary laurel forests have been greatly altered by logging,livestock and *** remains of laurel forests are currently protected in the Canary Islands(Spain).However,we miss basic information needed for their restoration and adaptive management,such as tree longevity,growth potential and responsiveness to natural and anthropogenic *** dendrochronological methods,we studied how forest dynamic is related to land-use change and windstorms in two well-preserved laurel forests on Tenerife *** cores were collected from over 80 trees per stand at three stands per *** used ring-width series to estimate tree ages and calculate annual basal area increments(BAI),cumulative diameter increases,and changes indicative of released and suppressed *** tree species were found in all stands,with Laurus novocanariensis,Ilex canariensis and Morella faya being the most common *** some individuals were over 100 years old,61.8%-88.9% of the trees per stand established between 1940 and 1970,coinciding with a post-war period of land abandonment,rural exodus and the onset of a tourism *** trees have shown growth rates larger than 1 cm diameter per year and most species have had increasing BAI trends over the past *** growth releases occurred after windstorms at both sites,but the effects of windstorms were site-dependent,with the 1958 storm affecting mainly the eastern tip of the island(anaga massif)and the 1991 storm the western tip(Teno massif).Given the great ability of laurel forest trees to establish after land use cessation and to increase growth after local disturbances such as windstorms,passive restoration may be sufficient to regenerate this habitat in currently degraded areas.

Recent data indicate that IGF1R/IRS signaling is a potential therapeutic target in BCR-ABL1-negative myeloproliferative neoplasms(MPN);in this pathway,IRS2 is involved in the malignant transformation induced by JAK2^(V617F),and upregulation of IGF1R signaling induces the MPN ***157,a synthetic compound designed as an IGF1R-IRS1/2 inhibitor,has been shown to induce antineoplastic effects in solid ***,we aimed to characterize the molecular and cellular effects of NT157 in JAK2^(V617F)positive MPN cell lines(HEL and SET2)and primary patient hematopoietic *** JAK2^(V617F)cell lines,NT157 decreased cell viability,clonogenicity,and cell proliferation,resulting in increases in apoptosis and cell cycle arrest in the G2/M phase(p<0.05).NT157 treatment inhibited IRS1/2,JAK2/STAT,and NFκB signaling,and it activated the AP-1 complex,downregulated four oncogenes(CCND1,MYB,WT1,and NFKB1),and upregulated three apoptotic-related genes(CDKN1A,FOS,and JUN)(p<0.05).NT157 induced genotoxic stress in a JAK2/STAT-independent ***157 inhibited erythropoietin-independent colony formation in cells from polycythemia vera patients(p<0.05).These findings further elucidate the mechanism of NT157 action in a MPN context and suggest that targeting IRS1/2 proteins may represent a promising therapeutic strategy for MPN.

Objective: To evaluate the role of regulatory T cells (Tregs) at late stages of stroke. Methods:Anti-CD25 antibody (or PBS as a control) was injected to reduce the pool of Tregs in Wistar rats;then, ischemia was induced transiently by middle cerebral artery occlusion during 60 min and reperfusion was allowed for 7 d. Then, Treg frequency was analyzed in peripheral blood, spleen and lymph nodes. Neurological score (0-6) and infarct volume were also determined. Results: Nine days after injection, the CD4+CD25+ T cells were reduced by 70.4%, 44.8% and 57.9% in peripheral blood, spleen and lymph nodes, respectively compared to PBS-treated rats. In contrast, the reduction of CD4+FOXP3+ T cells was lower in the same compartments (38.6%, 12.5%, and 29.5%, respectively). The strongest reduction of CD25+CD4+ T cells was observed in those FOXP3-negative cells in blood, spleen and lymph nodes (77.8%, 52.8%, and 60.7%, respectively), most likely corresponding to activated T cells. Anti-CD25-treated transient middle cerebral artery occlusion rats had a lower neurological deficit and did not develop tissue damage compared with PBS-treated animals. Conclusions: These findings suggest that treatment with anti-CD25 in our model preferentially reduce the T cell population with an activated phenotype, rather than the Treg population, leading to neuroprotection by suppressing the pathogenic response of effector T cells.

Long-Term Efficacy of Repositioning Maneuvers in Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo

To determine the characteristics of 12 patients with a diagnosis of benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) treated by the repositioning maneuver during a 24-month follow-up period after the initial discharge a longitudinal clinical study was performed in which a questionnaire for the assessment of discomfort caused by dizziness was applied at the first visit, at the last visit after treatment and 2 years after the initial discharge. Repositioning treatment was again offered to patients who suffered relapses. In 10 cases (83.34%) there was no recurrence of symptoms and 2 patients (16.66%) presented symptoms exactly 2 years after the original discharge showing that treatment of BPPV by repositioning manuevers is effective in the long term, but new studies in larger populations are needed to determine the pattern of the rates of recurrence of BPPV.

Microbiological, Physico-Chemical and Sensorial Characteristics of Serrano, an Artisanal Brazilian Cheese

The microbiological, chemical and sensory characteristics of licensed and unlicensed commercial Serrano cheese, a traditional product from the highlands of South Brazil, were studied. The average bacteria counts (log CFU/g) were 8.8, 3.4, 3.4, 5.1, and 8.8, for mesophilic bacteria, fecal coliforms, staphylococci, yeasts and moulds, and lactic acid bacteria (LAB), respectively. Differences in microbiological quality were detected between licensed and unlicensed cheeses. However, the presence of potential gastroentheric bacteria in both kind of cheeses is disturbing and point out the necessity of alternative manufacturing process and good manufacturing practices to minimize consumers’ health risks. The most prevalent LAB were Lactobacillus (91%), followed Lactococcus and Enterococcus. Lactobacillus isolates comprised L. plantarum (57.7%), L. paracasei (19.2%), L. rhamnosus (7.7%), L. acidophilus (7.7%), and 3.8% of both L. curvatus and L. fermentum. Non-significant physico-chemical differences were detected between licensed and unlicensed cheeses. Cheeses that received the highest sensorial scores exhibited the presence of both L. plantarum and L. paracasei, indicating that mixed populations of these species positively contributed to flavor development.
