Alcohol, a widely abused drug, has deleterious effects on the immature nervous system. This study investigates the effect of chronic in vitro ethanol exposure on the metabolism of immature rat cerebellar granular cells(CGCs) and on their response to oxygen-glucose deprivation(OGD). Primary CGC cultures were exposed to ethanol(100 mm in culture medium) or to control ethanol-free medium starting day one in vitro(DIV1). At DIV8, the expression of ATP synthase gene ATP5 g3 was quantified using real-time PCR, then cultures were exposed to 3 hours of OGD or normoxic conditions. Subsequently, cellular metabolism was assessed by a resazurin assay and by ATP level measurement. ATP5 g3 expression was reduced by 12-fold(P = 0.03) and resazurin metabolism and ATP level were decreased to 74.4 ± 4.6% and 55.5 ± 6.9%, respectively after chronic ethanol treatment compared to control values(P hould be addressed in future studies.

Joining techniques of dissimilar materials for lightweight multi-material automotive body structure were discussed. The joining of 1 .4 mm thickness steel and 2 mm thickness of Al were performed by the new method that is hybrid laser welding system. After aluminum and steel were welded by laser hybrid welding process, the micro-structure investment and the micro-hardness test were carried out. Hybrid laser welding promises a bright future in joining technology of dissimilar materials for automotive components.

Highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) has dramatically decreased opportunistic infections (OIs) in human immunodef iciency virus (HIV)-infected patients. however,gastrointestinal disease continues to account for a high proportion of presenting symptoms in these patients. Gastrointestinal symptoms in treated patients who respond to therapy are more likely to the result of drug-induced complications than OI. Endoscopic evaluation of the gastrointestinal tract remains a cornerstone of diagnosis,especially in patients with advanced immunodeficiency,who are at risk for OI. The peripheral blood CD4 lymphocyte count helps to predict the risk of an OI,with the highest risk seen in HIV-infected patients with low CD4 count (mm3). This review provides an update of the role of endoscopy in diagnosing OI in the upper gastrointestinal tract in HIV-infected patients in the era of HAART.

When considering potential global warming projections, it is useful to understand the impact of each climate condition at 6 kyr before present. Asian paleoclimate was simulated by performing an integration of the multi-model ensemble with the paleoclimate modeling intercomparison project（PMIP） models. The reconstructed winter（summer） surface air temperature at 6 kyr before present was 0.85 oC（0.21 oC） lower（higher） than the present day over Asia, 60oE-150oE, 10oN-60oN. The seasonal variation and heating differences of land and ocean in summer at 6 kyr before present might be much larger than present day. The winter and summer precipitation of 6 kyr before present were 0.067 and 0.017 mm·day-1larger than present day, respectively. The Group B climate, which means the dry climates based on K？ppen climate classification, at 6 kyr before present decreased 17% compared to present day, but the Group D which means the continental and microthermal climates at 6 kyr before present increased over 7%. Comparison between the results from the model simulation and published paleo-proxy record agrees within the limited sparse paleo-proxy record data.

Formation Mechanism of Chunky Graphite and Its Preventive Measures

The formation mechanism of chunky graphite has been reviewed and studied. The study consisted of a unidirectional solidification method, a small droplet method and a furnace cooling method. Four kinds of iron samples were prepared, namely, the pure Fe-C, Fe-C-S, Fe-C-Ce and Fe-C-Si-Ce alloys, and three kinds of nickel samples, namely the Ni-C, Ni-C-S and Ni-C-Mg alloys. The results of the unidirectional solidification of the Ni-C alloys showed that spheroidal graphite is not observed in the continuous solidified region, in which only flake-like graphite is observed, while spheroidal graphite is usually observed in the quenched liquid region. The existence of spheroidal graphite in the solidified phase is recognized only in the discontinuous growth mode of the Ni-C-Mg alloy solidified at 150 mm/h. This means that the spheroidal graphite is directly crystallized from the melt and entrapped by the flake-like chunky graphite that is formed by the continuous growth mode. In the small droplet method, a small piece of the Fe-C or Fe-C-Ce sample was melted on a pure graphite plate then cooled at a different cooling rate in a He-3%H2 atmosphere. The graphite in the Fe-C-Ce alloy is usually spherical. Nevertheless, the graphite morphology of the final solidified area changed from spherical to chunky and chunky to ledeburite with an increase in the cooling rate. This means that the chunky graphite is formed in the residual liquid region by the solidification into Fe-graphite system. The sample was cooled in a furnace, and the graphite morphology changes from spherical to chunky and chunky to ledeburite with the decrease in the Si content. These phenomena can be confirmed by the cooling curves of these samples.

Multiple myeloma(mm)is a hematological malignancy characterized by the accumulation of immunoglobulin-secreting clonal plasma cells at the bone marrow(BM).The interaction between mm cells and the BM microenvironment,and specifically BM mesenchymal stem cells(BM-MSCs),has a key role in the pathophysiology of this *** data support the idea that BM-MSCs not only enhance the proliferation and survival of mm cells but are also involved in the resistance of mm cells to certain drugs,aiding the progression of this hematological *** relation of mm cells with the resident BM-MSCs is a two-way *** modulate the behavior of BM-MSCs altering their expression profile,proliferation rate,osteogenic potential,and expression of senescence *** turn,modified BM-MSCs can produce a set of cytokines that would modulate the BM microenvironment to favor disease *** interaction between mm cells and BM-MSCs can be mediated by the secretion of a variety of soluble factors and extracellular vesicles carrying microRNAs,long non-coding RNAs or other ***,the communication between these two types of cells could also involve a direct physical interaction through adhesion molecules or tunneling ***,understanding the way this communication works and developing strategies to interfere in the process,would preclude the expansion of the mm cells and might offer alternative treatments for this incurable disease.

AIM: To share our surgical experience and the outcome of limited pancreatic head resection for the management of branch duct intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN). METhoDS: Between May 2005 and February 2008, nine limited pancreatic head resections (LPHR) were performed for IPMN of the pancreatic head. We reviewed the nine patients, retrospectively. RESULTS: Tumor was located in the uncinate process of the pancreas in all nine patients. Three patients had stents inserted in the main pancreatic duct due to injury. The mean size of tumor was 28.4 mm. Postoperative complications were found in f ive patients: 3 pancreatic leakages, a pancreatitis, and a duodenal stricture. Pancreatic leakages were improved by external drainage. No perioperative mortality was observed and all patients are recorded alive during the mean follow-up period of 17.2 mo. CONCLUSION: In selected patients after careful evaluation, LPHR can be used for the treatment of branch duct type IPMN. In order to avoid pancreatic ductal injury, preand intra-operative defi nite localization and careful operative techniques are required.

Evaluation of defects in aluminum piston castings by using ultrasonics and computer tomography

Pistons used in automobile engines are made of aluminum alloy; and endurance of high pressure and high temperature is required. Recently, high strength pistons are needed to cope with the increase of pressure and temperature in the engine cylinder. A high strength piston is possible when the piston casting has little or no casting defects, such as micro-pores and cracks. Generally the defects can be evaluated by non-destructive testing (NDT), and the most efficient ways for evaluation are using ultrasonics and computer tomography. In the present study, two NDT methods were compared and evaluated to investigate the defects in the aluminum piston castings. Artificial defects were machined by using very small drill bits with diameters 1, 0.5, 0.3, 0.2 and 0.1 mm. The defects were investigated by using an ultrasonic tester and a computer tomography system. Defects smaller than 0.3 mm may not be found by using the ultrasonic test, but the defects may be found by using the computer tomography system. The investigation conditions for detecting small defects and the scanning time for in-line defect analysis are discussed in the present study.

Increased extrinsic apoptotic pathway activity in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma following transarterial embolization

AIM:To determine the apoptosis pathway in residualviable hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) tissues following transarterial embolization(TAE) .METhoDS:Ten patients with HCC who received sur-gical resection after TAE were enrolled in the study group,and 24 patients with HCC who received surgical resection only served as the control group. In thestudy group,we measured the changes in tumor sizeand α fetoprotein(AFP) levels after TAE. All tissuesamples were taken from the residual tumors. The ex-pression of various apoptotic proteins was evaluatedvia immunoblotting procedures. The results were ana-lyzed using a Student's t ***:Tumor size and the AFP level decreased by46.2% and 55.3% after TAE,respectively. There wasno significant difference detected for the Bcl-2/Bax ratio or the cleaved caspase-9 expression levels in eithergroup. however,extrinsic apoptopic pathway-relate dexpression of Fas and cleaved caspase-8 expression were significantly higher in the study group than inthe control group(P < 0.05) . In addition,cleaved caspase-3 expression in the study group was higher(1.62-fold) than in control group(P < 0.05) .CONCLUSION:TAE is an effective palliative the rapy that decreases tumor size and AFP levels via an increase in extrinsic apoptosis path way in patients with unresectable HCC.
