Effect of arsenic on tolerance mechanisms of two plant growth-promoting bacteria used as biological inoculants

Bacterial ability to colonize the rhizosphere of plants in arsenic（As） contaminated soils is highly important for symbiotic and free-living plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria（PGPR）used as inoculants, since they can contribute to enhance plant As tolerance and limit metalloid uptake by plants. The aim of this work was to study the effect of As on growth,exopolysaccharide（EPS） production, biofilm formation and motility of two strains used as soybean inoculants, Bradyrhizobium japonicum E109 and Azospirillum brasilense Az39. The metabolism of arsenate（As（V）） and arsenite（As（III）） and their removal and/or possible accumulation were also evaluated. The behavior of both bacteria under As treatment was compared and discussed in relation to their potential for colonizing plant rhizosphere with high content of the metalloid. B. japonicum E109 growth was reduced with As（III）concentration from 10 μM while A. brasilense Az39 showed a reduction of growth with As（III） from 500 μM. EPS and biofilm production increased significantly under 25 μM As（III）for both strains. Moreover, this was more notorious for Azospirillum under 500 μM As（III）,where motility was seriously affected. Both bacterial strains showed a similar ability to reduce As（V）. However, Azospirillum was able to oxidize more As（III）（around 53%） than Bradyrhizobium（17%）. In addition, both strains accumulated As in cell biomass. The behavior of Azospirillum under As treatments suggests that this strain would be able to colonize efficiently As contaminated soils. In this way, inoculation with A. brasilense Az39 would positively contribute to promoting growth of different plant species under As treatment.

Spatiotemporal assessment of particulate matter(PM_(10) and PM_(2.5)) and ozone in a Caribbean urban coastal city

Air pollution has become a critical issue in urban areas,so a broad understanding of its spatiotemporal characteristics is important to develop public *** study analyzes the spatiotemporal variation of atmospheric particulate matter(PM_(10) and PM_(2.5))and ozone(O_(3))in Barranquilla,Colombia from March 2018 to June 2019 in three monitoring *** average concentrations observed for the Móvil,Policía,and Tres Avemarías stations,respectively,for PM_(10):46.4,51.4,and 39.7μg/m^(3);for PM_(2.5):16.1,18.1,and 15.1μg/m^(3) and for O_(3):35.0,26.6,and 33.6μg/m^(3).The results indicated spatial and temporal variations between the stations and the pollutants *** highest PM concentrations were observed in the southern part of the city,while for ozone,higher concentrations were observed in the *** variations are mainly associated with the influence of local sources in the environment of each site evaluated as well as the meteorological conditions and transport patterns of the study *** study also verified the existence of differences in the concentrations of the studied pollutants between the dry and rainy seasons and the contribution of local sources as biomass burnings from the Isla Salamanca Natural Park and long-range transport of dust particles from the Sahara *** study provides a scientific baseline for understanding air quality in the city,which enables policy makers to adopt efficient measures that jointly prevent and control pollution.

Effect of Zn binding to phytate and humic substances on its uptake by wheat(Triticum durum l.)as affected by carbonates and Fe oxides

Although complexation with soil organic matter may improve zinc(Zn)bioavailability to plants,the effect of Zn sorbent surface on the use of complexed Zn by plants remains *** objective of this research was to elucidate how Zn complexation with humic substances(HS)and phytate affects the uptake of Zn by wheat plants depending on the main sorbent surface in growth media,i.e.,carbonates and Fe *** this end,two pot experiments were performed,one using Fe oxide-coated siliceous as the siliceous growth medium sand and the other using a mixture of calcareous sand and siliceous sand as the calcareous growth *** experiment involved three Zn sources,Zn-HS complex,Zn phytate,and ZnSO_(4).All sources were applied with surface irrigation at two Zn rates(0.25 and 2 mg kg^(-1) growth medium).The Zn-HS complex significantly increased Zn uptake by plants in both media,relative to the other two Zn sources,but no significant difference was observed between Zn phytate and ZnSO_(4).In the calcareous medium,Zn-HS complex and Zn phytate resulted in significantly higher dry biomass yields of wheat than ZnSO_(4).In the siliceous medium,spike and shoot dry biomass yields with Zn-HS complex at the low rate and Zn phytate at both rates were not significantly different from those with ZnSO_(4) at the high *** harvest,approximately 50%of the Zn applied as Zn-HS complex remained extractable by diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid(DTPA),while this proportion was less than 20%for the other Zn ***,Zn-HS complex and Zn phytate are sources of available Zn for plants,and they are more effective than ZnSO_(4) in increasing plant growth,particularly when carbonates are the main Zn sorbent surface.

Evolutionary Genomics of Weedy Rice in the USA

Red rice Is an Interfertlle, weedy form of cultivated rice （Oryza sativa l.） that competes aggressively with the crop In the southern US, reducing yields and contaminating harvests. No wild Oryza species occur In North America and the weed has been proposed to have evolved through multiple mechanisms, Including ＂de-domestication＂ of US crop cultlvars, accidental introduction of Asian weeds, and hybridization between US crops and Asian wild/weedy Oryza strains. The phenotype of US red rice ranges from ＂crop mimics＂, which share some domestication traits with the crop, to strains closely resembling Asian wild Oryza species. Assessments of genetic diversity have Indicated that many weed strains are closely related to Asian taxa （Including indica and aus rice varieties, which have never been cultivated In the US, and the Asian crop progenitor O. ruflpogon）, whereas others show genetic similarity to the tropical Japonica varieties cultivated In the southern US. Herein, we review what Is known about the evolutionary origins and genetic diversity of US red rice and describe an ongoing research project to further characterize the evolutionary genomlcs of this aggressive weed.

When α= 0 we simply denote it by Me. In this paper we prove that if Ф and ψare two Young functions, there exists a third Young function θ such that the composition Mα,ψ o MФ is pointwise equivalent to Mα,θ. As a consequence we prove that for some Young functions θ, if Mα,θf 〈∞a.e. and δ ∈（0,1） then （Mα,θf）δ is an A1-weight.

Clinical outcomes with a new microincisional diffractive multifocal IOl

Background:To evaluate the refractive outcomes and the optical performance as well as the quality of life in patients implanted with a new diffractive multifocal intraocular lens(IOl).Methods:Prospective,clinical study including 41 cases of patients who underwent cataract surgery and were divided in two groups:group 1,including 20 eyes implanted with the multifocal IOl Seelens MF(Hanita lenses,Israel);group 2,21 eyes implanted with the Acrysof SA60AT *** acuity,defocus curve,intraocular aberrations,contrast sensitivity function and quality of life were assessed during a follow up period of 6 ***:Significant improvement was observed in the uncorrected distance visual acuity(UDVA)and corrected distance visual acuity(CDVA)in both groups(pltifocal group showed better results in terms of uncorrected near visual acuity(UNVA)and distance-corrected near visual acuity(DCNVA)(pl acuities for the multifocal IOl group in defocus levels from-3.0 D to-1.50 D(p≤0.01).At 6 months,there was a significant reduction of the internal higher order aberrations(p≤0.04).A significant increase in scotopic contrast sensitivity was detected for 6 cycles/°spatial frequency during follow up(p=0.04),but no significant changes were observed for the rest of spatial frequencies(p≥0.06).Visual Functioning Index(VF-14)questionnaire showed that patients reported high levels of satisfaction when performing daily ***:The Seelens MF IOl is able to successfully restore distance,near and intermediate visions after cataract *** also provides functional intermediate vision with optimal intraocular optical quality.

Multifunctional antimicrobial chlorhexidine polymers by remote plasma assisted vacuum deposition

Novel antibacterial materials for implants and medical instruments are essential to develop practical strategies to stop the spread of healthcare associated infections. This study presents the synthesis of multifunctional antibacterial nanocoatings on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) by remote plasma assisted deposition of sublimated chlorhexidine powders at low pressure and room temperature. The obtained materials present effective antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli K12, either by contact killing and antibacterial adhesion or by biocide agents release depending on the synthetic parameters. In addition, these multifunctional coatings allow the endure hydrophilization of the hydrophobic PDMS surface, thereby improving their biocompatibility. Importantly, cell-viability tests conducted on these materials also prove their non-cytotoxicity, opening a way for the integration of this type of functional plasma films in biomedical devices.

In vivo testing of mucus-permeating nanoparticles for oral insulin delivery using Caenorhabditis elegans as a model under hyperglycemic conditions

The aim was to evaluate the potential of mucus-permeating nanoparticles for the oral administration of *** nanocarriers,based on the coating of zein nanoparticles with a polymer conjugate containing PEG,displayed a size of 260 nm with a negative surface charge and an insulin payload of 77 mg/*** intestinal pig mucus,the diffusivity of these nanoparticles(PPA-NPs)was found to be 20-fold higher than bare nanoparticles(NPs).These results were in line with the biodistribution study in rats,in which NPs remained trapped in the mucus,whereas PPA-NPs were able to cross this layer and reach the epithelium *** therapeutic effcacy was evaluated in Caenorhabditis elegans grown under high glucose *** this model,worms treated with insulin-loaded in PPA-NPs displayed a longer lifespan than those treated with insulin free or nanoencapsulated in *** finding was associated with a signifcant reduction in the formation of reactive oxygen species(ROS)as well as an important decrease in the glucose and fat content in *** effects would be related with the mucus-permeating ability of PPA-NPs that would facilitate the passage through the intestinal peritrophic-like dense layer of worms(similar to mucus)and,thus,the absorption of insulin.
