EEG Mapping of Cortical Activation related to Emotional Stroop with Facial Expressions: A TrEFACE Study

TrEFACE (Test for recognition of Facial Expressions with Emotional Conflict) is a computerized model for investigating the emotional factor in executive functions based on the Stroop paradigm, for the recognition of emotional expressions in human faces. To investigate the influence of the emotional component at the cortical level, the electroencephalographic (EEG) recording technique was used to measure the involvement of cortical areas during the execution of certain tasks. Thirty Brazilian native Portuguese-speaking graduate students were evaluated on their anxiety and depression levels and on their well-being at the time of the session. The EEG recording was performed in 19 channels during the execution of the TrEFACE test in the 3 stages established by the model-guided training, reading, and recognition—both with congruent conditions, when the image corresponds to the word shown, and incongruent condition, when there is no correspondence. The results showed better performance in the reading stage and in congruent conditions, while greater intensity of cortical activation in the recognition stage and in incongruent conditions. In a complementary way, specific frontal activations were observed: intense theta frequency activation in the left extension representing the frontal recruitment of posterior regions in information processing;also, activation in alpha frequency in the right frontotemporal line, illustrating the executive processing in the control of attention, in addition to the dorsal manifestation of the prefrontal side, for emotional performance. Activations in beta and gamma frequencies were displayed in a more intensely distributed way in the recognition stage. The results of this mapping of cortical activity in our study can help to understand how words and images of faces can be regulated in everyday life and in clinical contexts, suggesting an integrated model that includes the neural bases of the regulation strategy.

Does the smartest designer design better？ Effect of intelligence quotient on students＇ design skills in architectural design studio

Understanding the cognitive processes of the human mind is necessary to further learn about design thinking processes. Cognitive studies are also significant in the research about design studio. The aim of this study is to examine the effect of designers intelligence quotient （lOJ on their designs. The statistical population in this study consisted of all Deylaman Institute of Higher Education architecture graduate students enrolled in 2011. Sixty of these students were selected via simple random sampling based on the finite population sample size calculation formula. The students＇ IQ was measured using raven＇s Progressive Matrices. The students＇ scores in Architecture Design Studio （ADS） courses from first grade （ADS-l） to fifth grade （ADS-5） and the mean scores of the design courses were used in determining the students＇ design ability. Inferential statistics, as well as correlation analysis and mean comparison test for independent samples with SPSS, were also employed to analyze the research data. results indicated that the students＇ IQ ADS-1 to ADS-4 scores, and the mean scores of the students＇ design courses were not significantly correlated. By contrast, the students＇ IQ and ADS-5 scores were significantly correlated. As the complexity of the design problem and designers＇ experience increased, the effect of IQ on design seemingly intensified.

response to vernalization and photoperiod are the main determinants controlling the time to flowering in temperate cereals. While the individual genes that determine a plant's response to these environmental signals are well characterized, the combinatorial effect on flowering time of allelic variants for multiple genes remains unresolved. This study investigated the genetic control of flowering-time in a biparental population of spring barley, derived from a wide cross between a late-flowering European and an early-flowering North-American cultivar. While the major flowering time genes are not segregating in the Beka ×logan cross, large variation in flowering was observed. We identified five QTl, with both parents found to contribute early alleles. The catalog of QTl discovered aligns with several candidate genes affecting flowering time in barley. The combination of particular alleles at HvCEN, HvElF3 and HvFT1 in logan are responsible for the earliness of this cultivar. Interestingly, earliness for flowering could be further enhanced, with Beka found to contribute three early alleles, including a QTl colocating with a HvFD-like gene, suggesting that there are diverse aspects of the flowering-time pathway that have been manipulated in these two cultivars. Epistatic interactions between flowering-time QTl or candidate genes were observed in field data and confirmed under controlled conditions. The results of this study link photoperiod-dependent flowering-time genes with earliness per se genes into a single model, thus providing a unique framework that can be used by geneticists and breeders to optimize flowering time in barley.

About an Ambiguity Appearing on the Hamiltonian Formulation of Quantum Mechanics

We study classical and quantum dynamics of the symmetric harmonic oscillator and the symmetric bouncer defined in 2-D. For these systems we get each of them for two different constants of motion, two lagrangians and two Hamiltonians which describe the same classical dynamics. However, the quantization of these systems (using Schrödinger equation), using their two equivalents Hamiltonian, describes different quantum dynamics for each of them. This represents an ambiguity on the Hamiltonian formulation of the Quantum Mechanics.

This article describes recent advances in the capability of new satellite sensors for observing Tropical Cyclones(TC)fine structure,wind field,and temporal *** article is based on a World Meteorological Organization(WMO)report prepared for the 10th International Workshop on Tropical Cyclones(IWTC),held in Bali in December 2022,and its objective is to present updates in TC research and operation every four *** we focus on updates regarding the most recent space-based TC observations,and we cover new methodologies and techniques using polar orbiting sensors,such as C-band synthetic aperture radars(SArs),l-band and combined C/X-band radiometers,scatterometers,and microwave imagers/*** additionally address progress made with the new generation of geostationary and small satellites,and discuss future sensors planned to be launched in the next *** then briefly describe some examples on how the newest sensors are used in operations and data assimilation for TC forecasting and research,and conclude the article with a discussion on the remaining challenges of TC space-based observations and possible ways to address them in the near future.

Monoclonal Antibody Production and Immunolocalization of a Salinity Stress-related Protein in rice (Oryza sativa)

Among various physiological responses to salt stress, the synthesis of a lectin-related protein of 14.5 kDa was observed in rice plants （Oryza sativa l.） under the treatment of 170 mmol/l NaCl. In order to better understand the role of the SAlT protein in the physiological processes involving salinity, it was irnmunolocalized in mesophilic cells of leaf sheath and blade of a rice variety IAC-4440 following monoclonal antibodies produced by hybridome culture technique. This variety turned out to be an excellent model for that purpose, since it accumulates SAlT protein even in absence of salt treatment and it has been classified as moderately sensitive to salinity and a superior grain producer. This feature was relevant for this work since it allowed the use of plants without the deleterious effects caused by salinity. Immunocytochemistry assays revealed that the SAlT protein is located in the stroma of chloroplasts under non-stressing condition. Since the chloroplast is the main target affected by salinity and considering that the SAlT protein does not present any apparent signal peptide for organelle localization, its lectin-like activity seems to play an important role in the establishment of stable complexes, either to other proteins or to oligosaccharides that are translocated to the chloroplast.

No independent associations between physical activity and clinical outcomes among hospitalized patients with moderate to severe COVID-19
