Effects of cropland abandonment and afforestation on soil redistribution in a small Mediterranean mountain catchment

In slopes of Mediterranean mid-mountain areas,land use and land cover changes linked to the aban-donment of cropland activity affect soil quality and degradation and soil redistribution;however,limited attention has been paid to this issue at catchment *** paper evaluates the effects of cropland abandonment and post-land abandonment management(through natural revegetation and afforesta-tion)on soil redistribution rates using fallout ^(137)Cs measurements in the Araguás catchment(0.45 km^(2),Central Spanish pyrenees).A total of 52 soil core samples,distributed in a regular grid,from the first 30-40 cm and 9 sectioned reference samples were collected across the catchment and soil properties were *** ^(137)Cs was measured in a 5 cm sectioned references samples and in bulk grid samples.^(137)Cs inventories were used to estimate soil erosion and deposition rates across the *** show that the highest erosion rates were recorded under sparsely vegetated sites in the badland area,while the lowest rates were found in the afforested area,but no significant differences were observed between the different uses and covers in soil redistribution rates likely due to a long history of human intervention through cultivation in steep slopes and afforestation ***,the recovery of the soil organic matter in afforested areas suggest that afforestation can reduce soil degradation at long-term *** information gained achieve a better understanding of soil redistribution dynamics and provide knowledge for effective land management after cropland abandonment of agroecosystems in Mediter-ranean mountain areas.

AIM: To analyze the attitude of Spanish medical students toward living liver donation (llD) and to establish which factors have an influence on this ***: Study type: A sociological, interdisciplinary, multicenter and observational study. Study population: Medical students enrolled in Spain (n = 34000) in the university academic year 2010-2011. Sample size: A sample of 9598 students stratified by geographical area and academic year. Instrument used to measure attitude: A validated questionnaire (pCID-DVH RIOS) was self-administered and completed anonymously. Data collection procedure: Randomly selected medical schools. The questionnaire was applied to each academic year at compulsory sessions. Statistical analysis: Student´s t test, χp>2p> test and logistic regression ***: The completion rate was 95.7% (n = 9275). 89% (n = 8258) were in favor of related llD, and 32% (n = 2937) supported unrelated llD. The following variables were associated with having a more favorable attitude: (1) age (p = 0.008); (2) sex (p p phical area (p = 0.013); (5) believing in the possibility of needing a transplant oneself in the future (p p living kidney donation (p ptance of a donated liver segment from a family member if one were needed (p ly (p p partner’s opinion about the subject (p ltruistic nature; and (12) fear of the possible mutilation of the body after donation (p lUSION: Spanish medical students have a favorable attitude toward llD.

Hepatitis C virus NS5A region mutation in chronic hepatitis C genotype 1 patients who are non-responders to two or more treatments and its relationship with response to a new treatment

To determine the number of mutations in the NS5A region of the hepatitis C virus (HCV) and its relationship to the response to antiviral therapy in patients with chronic hepatitis C genotype 1 who are non-responders to two or more treatments. METHODSSequences within HCV NS5A [pKR binding domain (pKRBD) and the interferon-sensitivity-determining region (ISDR)] were analysed via direct sequencing in a selected cohort of 72 patients, with a total of 201 treatments [interferon-alpha (IFN-α), n = 49; IFN-α + ribavirin (RBV), n = 75; pegylated (peg) IFN-α + RBV, n = 47; first-generation direct-acting antivirals (DAAs), n = 13; and second-generation DAAs, n = 17]. Of these, 48/201 achieved a sustained virological response (SVR) and 153/201 achieved no virological response (NVR). RESUlTSFor both regions, treatments resulting in SVR were associated with more baseline mutations than were treatments resulting in NVR (SVR vs NVR; pKRBD: 5.82 ± 3 vs 4.86 ± 2 mutations, p = 0.045; ISDR: 2.65 ± 2 vs 1.51 ± 1.7 mutations, p = 0.005). A decrease or no change in the number of mutations over time between treatments in the pKRBD or ISDR, as shown by sequencing, was associated with patients who usually failed to respond to treatment (pKRBD, p = 0.02; ISDR, p = 0.001). Moreover, patients showing a post-treatment baseline viral load > 600000 IU/ml and increased ISDR mutations with respect to the previous treatment were 9.21 times more likely to achieve SVR (p = 0.001). CONClUSIONThe obtained results show that among patients who have shown no response to two or more antiviral treatments, the likelihood of achieving SVR increases with the genetic variability in the ISDR region (≥ 2 mutations or number of substitutions from the HCV-J and HCV-1 prototype), especially when the viral load is greater than 600000 IU/ml.

Colon capsule endoscopy

Wireless capsule endoscopy has become the first imaging tool for small bowel examination. Recently, new capsule endoscopy applications have been developed, such as esophageal capsule endoscopy and colon capsule endoscopy. Clinical trials results have shown that colon capsule endoscopy is feasible, accurate and safe in patients suffering from colonic diseases. It could be a good alternative in patients refusing conventional colonoscopy or when it is contraindicated. Upcoming studies are needed to demonstrate its utility for colon cancer screening and other indications such us ulcerative colitis. Comparative studies including both conventional and virtual colonoscopy are also required.

Niche partitioning is a widespread ecological strategy within trophic guilds,ensuring the coexistence of sympatric species by reducing interspecific *** isotope analysis of carbon and nitrogen and isotopic niche metrics(width and overlap)are used as a proxy to investigate niche partitioning among species of a *** our study,we investigated if niche partitioning was an ecological mechanism contributing to the coexistence of granivorous birds from the same geographic region along time,employing an isotopic *** sampled and isotopically analyzed(δ^(13)C andδ^(15)N values)wing feathers from 58 specimens of granivorous birds collected between 1900 and 1966 in southeastern *** grouped birds according to the main habitat type used by them(forest:Cyanoloxia brissonii,leptotila and leptotila verreauxi;and grassland:Columbina squammata and Sicalis flaveola).We used the Isotopic Richness(IRic)metric to measure the isotopic niche width and the Isotopic Similarity(ISim)and Isotopic Nestedness(INes)metrics to measure the niche overlap between groups and *** results of low isotopic niche overlap suggest that common granivorous birds had a clear niche partitioning in southeastern Brazil in the late past,especially through foraging in distinct habitat types(forest and grassland;ISim=0.1,INes=0.2).Niche overlaps in almost all species-by-species comparisons were low(ISim≤0.3,INes≤0.4),except between *** and ***(ISim=0.6,INes=1.0).These results suggest that these birds,belonging to the same trophic guild,coexisted through niche and resource *** being considered a plastic trophic guild,the isotopic niche partitioning among granivorous birds indicates that each of these species uses a set of specific resources and *** raises an ecological concern about the homogenization of landscapes across the Neotropics,oversimplifying food resources and habitats to granivorous birds.

The Major ana zero mode(MzM), which manifests as an exotic neutral excitation in superconductors, is the building block of topological quantum computing. It has recently been found in the vortices of several iron-based superconductors as a zero-bias conductance peak in tunneling spectroscopy. In particular, a clean and robust MzM has been observed in the cores of free vortices in(li_(0.84)Fe_(0.16))OHFeSe. Here using scanning tunneling spectroscopy, we demonstrate that Major ana-induced resonant Andreev reflection occurs between the STM tip and this zero-bias bound state,and consequently, the conductance at zero bias is quantized as 2e^2/h. Our results present a hallmark signature of the MzM in the vortex of an intrinsic topological superconductor, together with its intriguing behavior.

BACKGROUND Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency(AATD)is a codominant autosomal hereditary condition that predisposes patients to the development of lung and/or liver disease,and pi*z allele is the most clinically relevant *** To evaluate the impact of clinical parameters and AATD phenotypes,particularly the pi*z allele,in liver *** Cross-sectional cohort study including consecutive patients with AATD followed in pulmonology or Hepatology *** Included 69 patients,49.3%had pi*Mz phenotype and 10.1%pi**** age≥55 years,age at diagnosis≥41 years and AAT at diagnosisl predicted a nonalcoholic fatty liver disease fibrosis score(NFS)not excluding advanced fibrosis[area under the curve(AUC)=0.840,ppp=0.025].An age≥50 years and age at diagnosis≥41 years predicted a fibrosis-4 index of moderate to advanced fibrosis(AUC=0.831,pppatients with hypertension,type 2 diabetes mellitus(DM),dyslipidaemia,metabolic syndrome,and regular alcohol consumption were more likely to have a NFS not excluding advanced fibrosis(pp=0.002,p=0.008,pp=0.033).patients with at least one pi*z allele and type 2 DM were 8 times more likely to have liver stiffness measurement≥7.1 kpa(p=0.040).CONClUSION Risk factors for liver disease in AATD included an age≥50 years,age at diagnosis≥41 years,metabolic risk factors,regular alcohol consumption,at least one pi*z allele,and AAT value at diagnosislgorithm for liver disease screening in AATD patients to use in primary care,selecting those to be referred to Hepatology consultation.

No independent associations between physical activity and clinical outcomes among hospitalized patients with moderate to severe COVID-19

Beta-blocker therapy in elderly patients with renal dysfunction and heart failure

OBJECTIVE To assess the role of beta-blockers(BB)in patients with chronic kidney disease(CKD)aged≥75 *** AND RESUlTS From January 2008 to July 2014,we included 390 consecutive patients≥75 years of age with ejection fraction≤35%and glomerular filtration rate(GFR)≤60 m l/min per 1.73 m^*** analyzed the relationship between treatment with BB and mortality or cardiovascular *** mean age of our population was 82.6±4.1 *** ejection fraction was 27.9%±6.5%.GFR was 60-45 m l/min per 1.73 m^2 in 50.3%of patients,45-30 m l/min per 1.73 m^2 in 37.4%,andl/min per 1.73 m^2 in 12.3%.At the conclusion of follow-up,67.4%of patients were receiving *** median follow-up was28.04(IR:19.41-36.67)*** the study period,211 patients(54.1%)died and 257(65.9%)had a major cardiovascular event(death or hospitalization for heart failure).BB use was significantly associated with a reduced risk of death(HR=0.51,95%CI:0.35-0.74;ppatients receiving BB consistently showed a reduced risk of death across the different stages of CKD:stage IIIa(GFR=30-45 m l/min per 1.73 m^2;HR=0.47,95%CI:0.26-0.86,pl/min per 1.73 m^2;HR=0.55,95%CI:0.26-1.06,p=0.007),and stages IV and V(GFRl/min per 1.73 m~2;HR=0.29,95%CI:0.11-0.76;p=0.047).CONClUSIONS The use of BB in elderly patients with HFr EF and renal impairment was associated with a better *** of BB should be encouraged when possible.
