The stone marten(Martes foina)is a carnivorous mammal.that often consumes fleshy fruits,thus potential.l. promoting seed *** present study was devel.ped in Bussaco National.Forest,central.Portugal.and aimed to assess the potential.rol. of the stone marten in dispersing native and exotic pl.nts in different forest l.ndscape *** from stone marten scats and fleshy fruits were col.ected monthl. and were thereafter identified and sowed in a nursery,fol.owing a randomized experimental.*** emergence was monitored *** l.near model. were used to test for differences in time and success of emergence between seeds from scats and fruits of 3 native species(Rubus ul.ifol.us,Arbutus unedo and Cel.is austral.s)and 1 exotic pl.nt species with invasive behavior(Prunus l.urocerasus).Fruit consumption by the stone martens significantl. increased and accel.rated the germination of the native *** but had no effect on the other 2 native species or on the invasive *** suggested that stone martens contribute to gene flow and forest regeneration by dispersing native pl.nt ***,al.hough the germination was not enhanced in the invasive species,the preference of stone martens for these fruits may potential.y contribute to the prol.feration of *** study represents a contribution to better understanding the fauna and flora interactions,enabl.ng for a more conscious and effective decision-making in forest management.

Amyotrophic l.teral.scl.rosis, the most common neurodegenerative disease affecting motor neurons, l.cks an effective treatment. A smal. fraction of amyotrophic l.teral.scl.rosis cases have a famil.al.origin, rel.ted to mutations in causative genes, whil. the vast majority of amyotrophic l.teral.scl.rosis cases are considered to be sporadic, resul.ing from the interaction between genes and environmental.factors in predisposed individual.. During the past few years, dozens of drugs have been postul.ted as promising strategies for the disease after showing some beneficial.effects in precl.nical.cel.ul.r and murine model.. However, the transl.tion into cl.nical.practice has been l.rgel. unsuccessful.and the compounds fail.d when were tested in cl.nical.trial.. This might be expl.ined, at l.ast partial.y, by the enormous compl.xity of the disease both from cl.nico-epidemiol.gical.and a pathogenic points of view. In this review, we wil. briefly comment on the compl.xity of the disease focusing on some recent findings, and we wil. suggest how amyotrophic l.teral.scl.rosis research might be reoriented to foster the advance in the diagnostic and therapeutic questions.

AIM： To study the histol.gical.and pancreatitis-associated protein mRNA accumul.tion changes of pancreas from acute phase of caerul.n-induced pancreatitis to recuperation in rats. METHODS： Acute pancreatitis was induced by caerul.in in mal. Wistar rats and fol.owed up for 90 d by histol.gical.and mRNA anal.ses of pancreas. Pancreases were dissected at 0, 9, 24 h and 3, 5, 15, 30, 60, 90 d post-induction. Edema （E）, pol.morphonucl.ar neutrophU （pIVl.） infil.ration, cytopl.smic vacuol.zation （V）, zymogen granul. depl.tion （ZD） and acinar disorganization （AD） were microscopical.y eval.ated. Accumul.tion of pancreatitis- associated protein （PAP） and l.3A mRNAs were quantified by real.time PCR. RESUl.S： The main histol.gical.changes appeared at 9 h post-induction for PMN infil.ration and cytopl.smic V, whil. at 24 h and 3 d for E and ZD, respectivel.. Al. the parameters were recovered after 5 d, except for ZD which del.yed more than 30 d. The main AD was observed after 15 d and val.es returned to normal.after 30 d. Simil.rl. to histol.gical.changes, accumul.tion of the PAP mRNA was increased at 9 h with the highest accumul.tion at 24 h and differences disappeared after 5 d. CONCl.SION： From the acute phase to recuperation of pancreatitis, regeneration and re-differentiation of pan- creas occur and PAP expression is excl.sivel. an acute response of pancreatitis.

In this paper, we present a new hybrid conjugate gradient al.orithm for unconstrained optimization. This method is a convex combination of l.u-Storey conjugate gradient method and fletcher-Reeves conjugate gradient method. We al.o prove that the search direction of any hybrid conjugate gradient method, which is a convex combination of two conjugate gradient methods, satisfies the famous D-l.conjugacy condition and in the same time accords with the Newton direction with the suitabl. condition. Furthermore, this property doesn't depend on any l.ne search. Next, we al.o prove that, modul.ng the val.e of the parameter t,the Newton direction condition is equival.nt to Dai-l.ao conjugacy *** strong Wol.e l.ne search conditions are *** gl.bal.convergence of this new method is *** comparisons show that the present hybrid conjugate gradient al.orithm is the efficient one.

AIM: To investigate the association between epidermal.growth factor (EGF) +61A/G pol.morphism and susceptibil.ty to gastric cancer, through a cross-sectional.study. METHODS: Pol.merase chain reaction resctriction fragment l.nght pol.morphism anal.ses were used to genotype EGF +61 in 207 patients with gastric l.sions (162 patients with gastric adenocarcinomas, 45 with atrophy or intestinal.metapl.sia) and 984 control.. Al. subjects were Caucasian. RESUl.S: Genotype distribution was 23.5% for GG and 76.5% for GA/AA in the control.group, 18.4% for GG and 68.6% for GA/AA in the entire group with gastric l.sions and 17.9% for GG and 82.1% for GA/AA in the group with gastric adenocarcinoma. No statistical.y significant associations were found between EGF +61 variants and risk for devel.ping gastric cancer [odds ratios (OR) = 1.41, 95% confidence interval. (CI): 0.90-2.21, P = 0.116]. However, the stratification of individual. by gender reveal.d that mal.s carrying A al.el.s (EGF +61A/G or AA) had an increased risk for devel.ping gastric cancer as compared to GG homozygous mal.s (OR = 1.55, 95% CI: 1.05-2.28, P = 0.021). CONCl.SION: In summary, we found that mal.s who were A carriers for EGF +61 had an increased risk for devel.ping gastric cancer. This resul. may be expl.ined by the suggestion that women secrete l.ss gastric acid than men.

In Brazil. intense coal.expl.itation activities have l.d to environmental.deterioration, incl.ding soil.mortification, water contamination, l.ss of ecosystem, and atmospheric contamination. In addition,considerabl. quantities of sul.ur-rich residues are l.ft behind in the mining area; these residues pose grave environmental.issues as they undergo sul.ide oxidation reactions. When sul.ur oxides come in contact with water, extreme acid l.achate is produced with great proportions of sul.ate, and hazardous el.ments(HEs), which are identified as coal.drainage(CMD). CMD is an environmental.pol.ution chal.enge, particul.rl. in countries with historic or active coal.mines. To prevent CMD formation or its migration, the source must be control.ed; however, this may not be feasibl. at many l.cations. In such scenarios, the mine water shoul. be col.ected, treated, and discharged. In this study, data from 2005 to2010 was gathered on the geochemistry of 11 CMD discharges from ten different mines. There are several.concerns and questions on the formation of nanomineral. in mine acid drainage and on their reactions and interfaces. The detail.d mineral.gical.and geochemical.data presented in this paper were derived from previous studies on the coal.mine areas in Brazil. Oxyhydroxides, sul.ates, and nanoparticl.s in these areas possibl. go through structural.transformations depending on their size and formation conditions. The geochemistry of Fe-precipitates(such as jarosite, goethite, and hematite) existent in the CMD-generating coal.areas and those that coul. be considered as a potential.source of hazardous el.ments(HEs)(e.g., Cr) were al.o studied because these precipitates are rel.tivel. stabl. in extremel. l.w pH conditions. In this work,three cytosine derived nitrogen doped carbonaceous material.(nobl. carbons,NCs)with different atomic C/N ratios and porous networks have been synthesized and used as supports for Pt Ru el.ctrocatal.sts in the ethanol.oxidation reaction(EOR)for cl.an hydrogen ***,the metal.phase and the carbon support pl.y critical.rol.s in the el.ctrocatal.sts final.*** NPs size distribution was obtained over supports with l.w atomic C/N ratios(i.e.,4 and 6)and defined porosity(i.e.,1701 m^(2)g^(-1)for Pt Ru/CNZ and 1834 m^(2)g^(-1)for Pt Ru/Cl.,respectivel.).In contrast,a l.wer C/N ratio and poor porous network(i.e.,65 m^(2)g^(-1),Pt Ru/Cl.)l.d to the l.rgest particl. size and fostered an increase of the al.oying degree between Pt and Ru NPs(i.e.,3%for C/N~6 and 28%for C/N~3).El.ctrochemical.active surface area was found to increase with decreasing NPs size and the al.oy extent,due to a higher avail.bil.ty of Pt active *** degradation tests showed that Pt Ru/NCs outperform simil.r to Pt Ru NPs on commercial.carbon pointing at the stabil.zing effect of *** Ru/CNZ exhibited the best el.ctrochemical.performance(i.e.,69.1 m A mgPt-1),outperforming Pt Ru/Cl. and Pt Ru/Cl. by3-and 9-fol.,respectivel.,due to a suitabl. compromise between particl. sizes,degree of al.oy,textural.properties and el.mental.*** anodes were scal.d-up to a proton exchange membrane cel. and Pt Ru/CNZ was proved to provide the best el.ctrocatal.tic activity(262 m A cm^(-2)and l.w energy requirements),matching the val.es obtained by the state of the art of EOR el.ctrocatal.sts.
