This paper examines the properties of wave propagation in transmission lines with periodic LC and CL cells, taking into account ohmic losses in resistors connected in series to lumped capacitors and inductors. First order time differential equations are derived for current and charge, thus allowing analysis of transient regimes of the lines being excited by a pulse of arbitrary shape. In particular we examine the propagation characteristics of periodic lines in which identical unit cells are repeated periodically and also discuss the interpretation of positive and negative phase velocities associated with the LC and CL topologies. Loss effects on the propagation bandwidths of both lines are also discussed, and it is shown that in the left-handed transmission line (CL configuration) the phase advance of the crest of the transmitted signal with respect to the source signal is due to the intrinsic dispersive nature of the CL line which, in contrast to the LC line, is highly dispersive at low propagation factors.

A strategic supply chain map will offer a basis for redesign or modification of the supply chain. It helps one to visualize the supply chain and identify areas for further analysis, or to reveal inefficiencies which are not as readily visible when one examines only a small segment of the supply chain. The main objective of this paper is to highlight the importance of mapping in the supply chain context while calling attention to the lack of universal symbols or conventions in the mapping procedure. Accordingly, a case study methodology is used in discussion of the Portuguese automotive supply chain. Based on this case study, it will be possible to conclude that there is an automotive industrial cluster located in two specific regions with an organisational agglomeration. Moreover, it has been possible to identify the main echoes which constitute the research supply chain as well as the dependent relationships which exist between different sectors in the Portuguese economy.

Non-atrophic active chronic gastritis (ACG) is characterized by the presence of H. pylori in the gastric epithelium, known to be one of the first steps that precede progression to gastric adenocarcinoma. Inactive chronic gastritis (ICG) suggests that the patient has H. pylori gastritis, but this diagnosis is rarely made in routine histopathology. Clinical manifestations associated with H. pylori infection are potentially due to differences in virulence between strains;however, it is unclear if the progression of ACG to ICG depends on the H. pylori strain. The aim of this study was to compare the prevalence of the virulence factors of H. pylori found in patients with ACG and ICG, and its influence on the development of ICG. A significant association was observed between H. pylori detection by histological examination and the activity of gastritis (p 1 year) was reported by 28.6% of the ACG group and 42.5% of the ICG, while no evidence of association between long-term use of PPI and decreased inflammation was found in the patients studied. The genes cagA, cagE and virB11 were statistically associated with ACG (p = 0.01, p vacAs1 allele groups, ACG was associated with the most virulent group (p = 0.0015), while ICG was associated with the less virulent group (p < 0.001). The rate of co-infection was significantly higher in ICG than in ACG cases (p = 0.02). In conclusion, this study points to the role of virulent strains of H. pylori in the non-resolution of gastritis.

Background: Labour induction is one of the most common medical procedures in obstetrics. The aim is to end the pregnancy when continuity is a risk to mother or fetus. Its main side effect is the increase in the cesarean rate, compared to spontaneous onset deliveries. On the other hand, mortality and morbidity in cesareans are higher. The most common pharmacological drugs used for induction are prostaglandins: dinoprostone and misoprostol. The “gold standard” for labour induction is vaginal misoprostol. The oral route is also effective and also has several benefits like faster onset and easear administration. In recent years several publications state that the administration of misoprostol oral solution, given in doses gradually, is associated with a lower cesarean and hyperstimulation rate than the cases where vaginal misoprostol has been used in pregnant women with unripe cervix. Furthermore, being its half life shorter, it may be very useful in case of uterine hyperstimulation and, probably, a high percentage of women prefer this oral administration to the vaginal one. The objective of this study is to compare the efficacy, safety and side effects on mother and fetus on use of oral versus vaginal administration for induction of labour for prolonged gestation (41 weeks) and premature rupture of membranes, both with live fetus. Methods/Design: Design: double blind controlled trial. Study population: Pregnant women whose labour will be induced due to premature rupture of membranes or prolonged gestation. Inclusion Criteria: 1) Bishop Test equal to or less than 7;2) Single pregnancy;3) Pregnancy at term (37 - 42 weeks);4) No history of uterine surgery;5) Cephalic presentation;6) Live fetus;7) No prostaglandins contraindications. Discussion: Nowadays induction rates are very high, ranging from 25% to 30% approximately. In these cases caesarean rates are higher than when the delivery starts spontaneously. Lectin Cramoll-1,4, obtained from Cratylia mollis seeds (beans camaratu) was structurally characterized, biologically and pharmacologically, but its use as a biopharmaceutical is not well documented. The objective of this study is to propose a biopharmaceutical formulation lectin Cramoll-1,4, test their hemagglutinating properties in vitro as well as the use of gamma radiation as a continuous process of decontamination formulation. It was made of the extraction and purification Cramoll-1,4, was developed a gel formulation using Carbopol? as a vehicle, at concentrations of 50, 100, 200, 300 and 600 μg was irradiated with 60Co gamma rays in a dose of 7.549 kGy·h–1. The proposed formulation at a concentration of 300 μg produced an increase in the hemagglutinating units Cramoll-1,4 due to the synergistic effect caused by gamma radiation. Considering the diverse use of lectins, specific molecular and structural factors, as well as changes resulting from its formulation, concentration, irradiation and route of administration is of utmost importance to continue the studies in vitro, for subsequent application in vivo to characterize the physiological and molecular processes involved in the response and cellular effects.

Food irradiation has the purpose of destroying insects or microorganisms, thereby increasing the safety and shelf life of foods. Flavonoids are ubiquitous plant secondary products with radical scavenger ability. In the present study their antioxidant stability after gamma irradiation was evaluated. The flavonoids showed fast scavenger ability measured with the 2.2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH) after high doses of radiation. The low damage caused by irra- diation on antioxidant capacity of the flavonoids shows their potential use in combating chemical oxidation of bio- molecules in irradiated foods.

Background: For the WHO, anemia is a serious public health problem, with an emphasis on deprivation anemia, which has socioeconomic conditions as determining factors for its development. Among nutritional anemias, the most relevant is iron deficiency, whose main form of prevention and treatment is supplementation with ferrous sulfate dispensed in the public health system, with the need to periodically check whether the drug has the quality required by regulatory health agencies. Thus, the objective of this study was to analyze the quality of the ferrous sulfate medication, from the same laboratory, and dispensed in a basic health unit (BHU) and a commercial pharmacy (CF). Materials and Methods: An analytical, qualitative and quantitative study of ferrous sulfate heptahydrate (25 mg/mL in 100 mL syrup), carried out on 20 BHU and 10 from CF, both from the same laboratory, but in different batches. Samples were subjected to organoleptic analysis and verification of iron content, pH, volume and density. Data were compared with values recommended by the Brazilian pharmacopoeia 5th edition. Results: Three batches were evaluated: 4659 of from the CF;4574 from the BHU1, and 4576 from the BHU2, stored in accordance with RDC 304/19 of ANVISA. All showed compliance with some organoleptic characteristics;and stable values in pH (3.61 - CF;3.67 - BHU1;3.65 - BHU2), density (1.079 - CF;1.088 - BHU1;1.086 - BHU2) and individual volume (not less than 95% of the declared value). However, it was not possible to detect the odor of herbs;the average volume of batch BHU1 was below the declared value, and the iron content of both BHUs was above the maximum value of pharmacopoeia standards. Conclusion: Samples did not show full compliance with the physical and chemical parameters evaluated, suggesting deviation in the quality of the medication.
