Comparison of the effect of carbon,halloysite and titania nanotubes on the mechanical and thermal properties of LDPE based nanocomposite films

In this study, titania nanotubes （TNTs） were prepared by hydrothermal method with the aim to compare the properties of these one-dimensional tubular nanostructures＇ reinforced nanocomposites with the carbon and halloysite nanotubes＇（CNTs and hNTs, respectively） reinforced nanocomposites. Low density polyethylene （LDPE） was used as the matrix material. The prepared nanocomposites were characterized and compared by means of their morphological, mechanical and thermal properties. SEM results showed enhanced interracial interaction and better dispersion of TNTs and hNTs into LDPE with the incorporation of a MAPE compatibilizer, however, these interactions seem to be absent between CNTs and LDPE, and the CNTs remained agglomerated. Contact angle measurements revealed that CNT filled nanocomposites are more hydrophilic than hNT composites, and less than TNT composites. CNTs provided better tensile strength and Young＇s modulus than hNT and TNT nanocomposites, a 42% increase in tensile strength and Young＇s modulus is achieved compared to LDPE. Tear strength improvement was noticed in the TNT composites with a value of 35.4 N. mm -1, compared to CNT composites with a value of 25.5 *** 1 -s- 1. All the prepared nanocomposites are more thermally stable than neat LDPE and the best improvement in thermal stability was observed for CNT reinforced nanocomposites. CNTs depicted the best improvement in tensile and thermal properties and the MAPE compatibilizer effective- ness regarding morphological, mechanical and thermal properties was only observed for TNT and hNT systems.

Enhancement of Electric Conductivity in Transparent Glasse—Ceramic Nanocomposites of Bi_2O_3—BaTiO_3 Glasses

The frequency and temperature dependent electrical conductivity measurements for heat-treated binary glass system with composition of （lO0-x）Bi203-xBaTi03 （x = 20, 30, 40 and 50, in mol%） were carried out. The glass was prepared by melt quenching technique and their corresponding glass-ceramic nanocomposites were obtained by suitable heat treatment. Nanostructured behavior and electrical properties of these glasses and their corresponding glass-ceramic nanocomposites were studied. X-ray diffraction （XRD） and differential scanning calorimetry confirmed the amorphous nature of the glasses. Moreover, XRD patterns of the samples indicate nanocrystallites embedded in the glass matrix. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy （FT-IR） spectral analysis showed that the band positions of glass system are within the wave number range of Bi06, Bi03 and Ti06 structural units. It is observed that the electrical conductivity is enhanced by 102-103 times in the transparent glass-ceramic nanocomposite phase. With further heat treatment, the conductivity decreased considerably in the stage of glass-ceramic nanocomposite phase as compared with the glassy phase sample. Therefore, partially devitrified phase is more suitable as cathode material in secondary batteries compared to its vitreous or fully crystalline counterpart. The conduction mechanism was confirmed to obey the adiabatic small polaron hopping （SPh）. AC conductivity measurements were performed as a function of temperature and frequency, showing a very slow increasing rate at low temperatures and then a fast rate at higher temperatures.

Effect of iron addition on microstructure, mechanical and magnetic properties of Al-matrix composite produced by powder metallurgy route

The effect of iron addition on the microstructure, mechanical and magnetic properties of Al-matrix composite was studied. Mechanical mixing was used for the preparation of 0, 5%, 10% and 15% Fe-Al composites（mass fraction）. Mixtures of Al-Fe were compacted and sintered in a vacuum furnace at 600 °C for 1 h. X-ray diffraction（XRD） of the samples containing 5% and 10% Fe indicates the presence of Al and Fe peaks, while sample containing 15% Fe reveals Al and Al13Fe4 peaks. The results show that both densification and thermal conductivity of the composites decrease by increasing the iron content. The presence of iron in the composite improves the compressive strength and the hardness. The strengthening mechanism is associated with the grain refinement of the matrix and uniform distribution of the Fe particles, as well as the formation of Al13Fe4 intermetallic. The measured magnetization values are equal to 0.3816×10-3 A·m2/g for 5% Fe sample and increases up to 0.6597×10-3 A·m2/g for 10% Fe sample, then decreases to 0.0702×10-3 A·m2/g for 15% Fe sample. This can be explained by the formation of the diamagnetic Al13Fe4 intermetallic compound in the higher Fe content sample detected by XRD analysis.

Toward an operating speed profile model for rural two-lane roads in Egypt

The geometric design, especially the horizontal and vertical alignments, of rural two-lane highway facilities is considered one of the most important factors affecting the quality of traffic service and safety. A consistent highway geometric design is defined to be one that conforms to the driver＇s expectations. In order to calculate the main measures of design consistency, an accurate operating speed profile model for road alignment is needed. Studies have shown that operating speed models are country dependent due to varying demographics, driver attitudes, habits, etc. This paper develops a speed profile model for two-lane rural roads in Egypt. This includes the development of operating speed models for horizontal curves and tangents, as well as the study of the characteristics and relationships between acceleration and deceleration rates before and after horizontal curves. The study uses a desert rural two-lane, two-way road sections that connect the city of Sohag with the city of hurghada, in Upper Egypt. All geometric characteristics were obtained from high- way authority. Speed data regarding individual drivers traveling on selected two-lane rural road sections were sampled using an on-board GPS system. The study confirms the finding in previous research that curvature is the most important factor in determining the speed on horizontal curves. Moreover, tangent length is the most important factor in determining operating speeds at tangents. The acceleration and deceleration characteristics were derived to gain an understanding of the behavior of individual vehicles traveling through curves of varying radii and lengths as well as preceding tangent length. Several operating speed models were developed for tangents and curves as well as for acceleration and deceleration rates. Incredibly effective, these models can be used for design consistency evaluations.

Potential reduction in water consumption of greenhouse evaporative coolers in arid areas via earth-tube heat exchangers

This study aimed to explore the potential of developing a novel cooling system combining a greenhouse and an earth-tube heat exchanger(EThE).In this system,greenhouse air is circulated through the underneath soil mass to use the deep-soil cooling *** was achieved through the following ***,soil temperature profile inside and outside the cultivated greenhouse was monitored for almost one year to study the possibility of using deep-soil coldness for cooling the greenhouse ***,a prototype EThE was built to practically investigate the potential reduction in air temperature as the air flows inside the deep earth ***,a prototype greenhouse was erected to study the EThE *** from the first experiment revealed that soil temperature at a soil depth of 2.5 m inside the greenhouse offers good conditions to bury the *** soil temperature at this soil depth was below the maximum temperature(32℃)that most greenhouse crops can *** from the prototype EThE showed a slight reduction in air temperature as it passed through the *** the prototype of the integrated greenhouse and EThE system,reduction in air temperature was observed as the air passed through the EThE *** night,the air was heated up across the EThE pipes,indicating that the EThE was working as a *** concluded from this study that greenhouses in arid climates can be cooled using the EThE concept which would save a large amount of water that would otherwise be consumed in the evaporative *** investigations are highly encouraged.

Using nanotechnology to prevent fines migration while production

Formation damage due to fines migration is a major reason for well productivity decline for oil and gas *** fines are small enough to pass through pore throats causing pore plugging and permeability *** factors affect fines migration such as flow rate,salinity,ph value,reservoir temperature and oil polarity,as well as changes in chemical environment induced by Enhanced Oil Recovery(EOR)*** paper focuses on the effect of flow rates on fines detachment from the grain surfaces,which causing permeability *** the fluid inside the reservoir moves towards the wellbore,the fluid velocity increases,when the fluid reaches the critical flow rate these fines can be picked up into the *** fines captured by thinner pore throats causing pore plugging and permeability *** concentrations of nanoparticles were used to fix these fines on their sources and prevent their mobilization at high flow *** unique technique used in this study is changing the potential surfaces between fines and grain surfaces to prevent fines movement above the critical flow ***_(2)and MgO NPs used in this study can be adsorbed on the pore surfaces and reduce the repulsion forces between fines and pore ***_(2) and MgO nanoparticles at different concentrations(0.25,0.50 and 0.75 g/L)were used on treating the Abu-Rawash sandstone reservoir using Formation Damage System Cell *** experimental studies showed that using MgO NPs would prevent fines detachment from the pore surfaces and decrease the reduction of permeability at high flow rates more than SiO_(2) *** optimum concentration of MgO NPs was at 0.5 g/L as the permeability remediation at this concentration reaches to 64.83%.
